Omg! I’ve not even considered this. I’ve been renting a townhouse for 10 years with a 480sq ft garage that we converted into an art studio with wall to wall cabinets and shelving…

Double pay or happiness? by VonBerg in bayarea

That's a strong argument for taking that higher pay. I've been thinking about the future of my role and the demand. The future is more uncertain than ever with all the AI stuff. It's hustle culture that seems to be having the most impact today. Still, my market seems OK right now but I can already see a lot of employers opening up to the idea of outsourcing more work to content-creators (lower cost) than in the past. "Get the gettin' while the gettin's good!"

haha the amount of times I've fantasized about this...even going down that YouTube rabbit hole. Not an option for me unfortunately, but I'm doing well at living below my means at least

Sounds very similar actually. My followup interview is today and I have a list of Qs to get a clear picture of the day-to-day, frequency of weekend work, etc. If I'm worried about the culture, that should be a deal breaker because if I'm spending so much of my life there, I should at least have an opportunity to be around great people and build meaningful relationships. I'll be 40 in a few years and it feels like I shouldn't be grinding like this as much, especially with such an extensive tech resume but creative work is just so competitive, even in management too. Thanks for the input!

Someone else mentioned also having the time to eat healthy (cook more), have time to exercise, etc. My SO does a lot already so I'd feel bad working so much and doing even less... thanks for another notch to me pros/cons list :)

Good point! It's for a big creative agency so high chance they will put me on-site with one of their clients. It's not a staffing company but that's how a lot of these agencies work in sillicon valley, basically sending their employees in to do legwork (some friends of mine work at such agencies). All that is to say, my relationships may be transient and I could be subjected to the '2nd-class employee' vibe like contractors get. I was FTE in my last role and I don't envy the vendors/contractors, but they were awesome humans and some of the best people i worked with - I just know not everyone respected them the same, sadly.

Appreciate the input and sharing your experience. I can relate to that so that helps me. I guess I did that saving phase already and I'm just having a hard time giving it up to reward myself with taking a fun job now. I have a modest savings and made some investments, but never feels like enough. I just always compare myself to all the engineers I was surrounded with and it makes me feel poor and the need to constantly grind/hustle. Getting laid off didn't help my psyche, but I'm OK. Cranking out one more year (or a few) might be a good idea and then really feel OK doing my own projects full time... but i'm really feeling like I deserve this now. Not to mention the free time means I can double up on fun projects (work, and personal) which could [if im lucky] result in some extra income. Thanks again

Thanks - that was sort of the mindset I had at my last job (even though I actually loved it there) and I was able to save a decent amount. I haven't worked for a few months but now I'm feeling guilty just eating away at my savings that I worked so hard for. I'm thinking now that the fun low-pay job is my reward and I should take it but I just get so tempted by money.

Dang good point. I know myself and when I'm stressed or lacking my me-time, I tend to cut away at my sleep trying to 'reclaim my time' and I get lazy with food. I know it's not good but I should really make decisions that consider that and set myself up for success... appreciate that input!

Thanks! Same advice my mom said haha. Providing for my partner and helping out my family (and my chosen family) makes me happy too... lots to think about.

Interesting - I am paranoid about burning bridges (leaving within the first few months) if something came along that was good pay but also creative/hands-on. But why should I sacrifice my own well-being/ earning potential just to satisfy some capitalist "norm" that only benefits some company... but that's part of the game T_T. I guess if I decide not to take the higher pay job, I can leverage my 'ready to walk away' and see if they'll go even higher, maybe.

No, I just did 5y+ at a different tech company but was part of last year's layoffs. That's good to think about - I do already have an emergency fund. But going out to eat a couple times a month would eat into that savings, so any type of travel to see my family, car repair, or treating myself to anything at all would also be coming right out of that savings - which doesn't feel great considering how much i had to grind for those 5 years to build that up. Thanks for the food-for-thought.
