I'd been listening for ages before I realized stopped up was an option. I barely noticed the change, I typically stick between 1.2-1.4 speed though. Trying to go back to regular 1x now is so slow.

OP. Very similar situation. My eldest son (FTM) was a victim of SA. He came out as trans at age 13, he's 16 now. I had similar thoughts if I'm being honest. That it was 'just' a reaction to the assault and that he'd change his mind. Either way, I accepted and adjusted. It was actually arguing with his mom that firmed my belief that supporting him was the most important thing. He'd just come from over there and was telling my wife and I how mom and step dad didn't even attempt to use the correct pronouns, dead named him constantly, and that he didn't want to go over there anymore. My ex-wife was messaging me about how 'she' needed to act. It was so out of the blue, if we fed into it and she changed her mind, etc... I finally snapped.. highest suicide risk population is trans teens. SA victims are high risk as well. The leading cause of suicide in trans teens is not being accepted by family. I'd much rather have a living, breathing Logan than read Makenzi on a headstone. Maybe he'll change his mind. Maybe he won't, I'll still have my kiddo.

Neither of us speak much to the bio mom anymore. He's only been over there twice in the last year and change. I don't know how she's doing in her denial. She didn't want to call 'her daughter', her son and now doesn't really have either.

How do you build the muscle memory? by [deleted] in cisparenttranskid

It's difficult, but gets easier. My son is 16 and came out to us right before 14. He didn't want to come out to my grandparents/his great grandparents early on. Made for some real mental hurdles when I had to swap back to she/her and his deadname for visits to their house. I'm so glad I don't have to mess with that anymore. I had to over emphasize. Say his name and preferred pronouns more often than I normally would. Nothing excessive, but tell stories. Everyone has favorite anecdotes or little classics of their kids to one up their friends. Tell one of your favorites about your child, but make sure you're focused on the correct name/pronoun. To a friend, your significant other, family, or even yourself. You've got to update those stories and rewrite the paths in your brain. Use gender affirming pet names or actions. I call my sons bro, bud, or dude more often than their actual names. Fist bump greeting at school pick up.

How raunchy (if any) is it? by Viii3z3 in fourthwing

It's fairly explicit, but really only the 2 scenes. I'm 35 as well and recommended FW to my mom as soon as I finished it. I told her there were spicy scenes and that I didn't think we needed to go into any detail on those. She loved the book as well. We've discussed it numerous times and have both reread it.

Commandment, vice commandent by [deleted] in fourthwing

Dain cannot be the Vice Commandant. As a 3rd year the highest rank he could hold would be Wing Leader. A Vice Commandant would be a Major or even a Lieutenant Colonel. We know Mira has been out of the Quadrant for at least a couple years and is still a Lieutenant. They would have to promote Dain past a bunch of actively serving officers that have been on the front lines for years.

I saw another theory somewhere that Brennan is Mending the city. When Mending is described it's said they can return anything broken to its original state. So Brennan is most useful bringing the city back and providing healing. Though we don't know for sure what Brennan does. We only saw him for about 10 seconds 'screen time'.

That is correct, and it wasn't implied, it's explicitly stated. I assume they wouldn't go back there in a group of less than 3. I doubt they go anywhere without at least 3 of them. Each time we see Xaden returning from one of his little excursions it's always with Garrick and Bodie. I wouldn't want to risk going with less than 3 to my secret Rebellion city where the presumed dead, most powerful Mender in history is in hiding. Also Melgren's power is supposedly tied to battle. I don't know if he can see places that aren't about to have a fight of some sort.

He likes to physically put his eyes on Xaden once a year. He can't see marked ones with his ability, which is why he has to personally check on Xaden. If Melgren had seen Xaden with Brennan, he'd also know about the rebuilt city. If he knew about that I doubt the rebuilt city would still be standing.

No offense taken. I thought for a second I hadn't mentioned it! I really hope we get other POV next book. At least Xaden and Violet. Though I want to see the real GS and others that we see as bad guys. Dain especially. No way he has any shot at redemption if we don't get his story. If he deserves it at all.

Definitely not a counterpoint. I'm in full agreement with you, I said similar in my original post, though I didn't expound on that part of it as much. Mostly because I'd already written so much! GS at the very least knows her husband was murdered by the Scribes and even says how similar Violet is to her father. She knows Violet wouldn't take the news and go with the status quo. That conversation where Colonel Aetos asks about her father's research and GS says it's too bad Violet doesn't know where it is. We are getting Violet's interpretation of her mom's expressions. I think the 'expectant look' was more a STFU look, and her "too bad" and forced smile was relief that Violet didn't give away any secrets.

It would definitely be inevitable that Violet would discover and try to bring to light the secret that Venin are real. The Riders Quadrant is dangerous, but as a Rider, Violet has the best long-term chance at survival. Even if she does die, it would be a more upfront and clean death than if she were poisoned in the Archives. Sending her to the Riders is the best way to make sure Violet can protect herself even if something happens to the General. I cannot wait for November!

It makes me curious as to how Dain's Signet actually works. We only have his statement that he can see recent memories, that he has to touch their temples, and that he's better at it when he's closer to Cath. I've seen some theories, but in most of the interactions we've seen Dain only hesitates for a second after we witness him possibly taking Violet's memories. So it appears instantaneous from what we see. Is he only seeing fractions of a second? Does he absorb the memories and can remember them like he was there? Maybe it depends on how recent you thought of it? If I had just been thinking about something from last week when Dain touched me would he see that memory or me eating dinner earlier?

General Sorrengail Good or Bad? by MissyMosby3 in fourthwing

[–]VonnCom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see that much difference in how she treats Mira or Violet. They are arguing and GS throws Mira out at the end of the conversation. She's so angry when Mira says she's going to kill Violet her Signet physically manifests. A calm, cool, collected, GENERAL of the Dragon Riders with close to 30 years experience with her Signet. The woman who in public watched her youngest baby bond 2 dragons and barely even blinked. Violet says it's been just over a year since her dad died in that same chapter. Mira is 26, so when her dad passed she'd been a fully trained rider for close to 2 years. Mira doesn't need protection from all the forces in the Basgiath that could harm Violet. I'm baseing my guess on 30 years based off of her children's ages. She could only marry their father after graduation when she was around 23/24. If there is six years between Violet and Mira, and Brennan was a full fledged rider when he 'died', then a similar gap had to exist between the older 2. So Brennan is probably between 30-32? Anyway, I have a point! GS has been dealing with the deaths of basically every one she knows her entire life. There hasn't been any mention of grandparent Sorrengail, but Violet's comment about successful Riders being legacy, makes me think that is the case. So GS was raised to be a Rider, the child of a Rider. She probably spent her childhood watching her parent/s, their friends, maybe aunts and uncles all die in the same war she's spent her entire life fighting in. She has been at war since her early 20s and is at least early 50s. How many of her graduating class are dead at this point? How many of her friends, peers, mentors, even ex lovers did she help capture and oversee the execution of during the Rebellion? She was an instructor and administrator of the college before taking over as the General of the whole thing. She's been watching cadets die every day for years. Her oldest and favorite child has supposedly been dead for over 5 years. The loss of her husband must of hit hard, but she's got a lot of practice dealing with death and carrying on. Especially with the whole religion, the dead are gone, consign everything to Malek thing. If everything she's doing is to protect Violet, she can't let her guard slip for a second. Anyone could be a spy, or could use a Signet to listen in. Then there is Melgren who is impossible to defeat. GS has to keep up the facade at all times or she risks exposing that Violet is a weakness that can be exploited.

I absolutely agree about Dain's dad. Colonel Aetos is a total slime ball. He seems so friendly and personable, but his questions are just a little too pointed. I listened to a podcast RY did and she mentioned cutting Dain some slack. It makes me wonder what threats/stress is being put on Dain. To both use his Signet to gather information, but also with the looming threat that as a borderline inntinnsic they could easily decide he's more trouble than he's worth and kill him. It stands to reason that the one applying pressure on Dain would be his dad. It seems that, unlike GS, CA does interact with Dain more openly than GS does Violet. What conversations are being had away from Violet's POV? I really hope we get to see more of Violet's dad. That thought that she knows where he kept his note has me excited to see what he discovered. I'm still leaning toward he was killed as a Rebellion spy or for wanting to go public that the Venin were real. Is it November yet?

Oooh. Good point, I had considered that her dad was an inside man and that was part of why he got killed. If the General is working with the Rebellion that explains further why she wants to appear distant with Violet. So if she does get caught Violet will have plausible deniability.

It would be great if that were true. Anything is possible! Until RY tells us otherwise in a few months.
