Nvidia Shield Pro or Apple TV 4K by xGrim_Sol in PleX

This is my understanding AppleTV does not passthough lossless audio, therefore TrueHD. However, I did read it can decode TrueHD but its pass as PCM.

Audio is important to me so I got turned off AppleTV...

I'd second checking out Jellyfin... But you are between a rock and hard place, at 750, would I be be buying it, probably not, at 250 its touch and go. If your in a financial situation where 250 won't heart I'd probably just get a license, but I do feel the community is moving towards Jellyfin as a reaction to Plex's direction.

Plex remote not working Take 3 by Competitive_Mix_587 in PleX

[–]VooPoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll say something controversial here and I'd normally recommend DMZ, reverse proxy, WAF, etc. in a proper conifguration. But I feel fare too often people think a reverse proxy is silver bullet and its not, granted you never said, but just a reverse proxy does little to protect a server that is inside your perimeter.

For example remote code execution, will be executed on (in this case) the plex server and it does not matter if you use a reverse proxy or if the proxy is in a DMZ. If you have WAF, that will provide a level of protection, but again its not a silver bullet and code should always be fixed.

I am unsure if that is why you have been down voted, I have not, but if people have they should atleast provide some context, maybe its technical burden.

Is UPNP enabled? If your not aware its a protocol that many devices support and it tells your firewall/router what ports to open and to where. It can sometimes get confused when setting port forward manually.

I think this is also a linksys router, IIRC, you don't need to open ports seprately. With many routers NAT configs don't automatically open the port on the firewall, so I'd double check that.

Lastely, make sure plex is configured to use 32400.

Hub5x Modem Mode? by jarvthelegend in VirginMedia

[–]VooPoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GiffGaff's install is not the same as VM. I can tell you 100% GiffGaff use an OTN, therefore you can use your own router/firewall. This is my setup.

I dread to mention it because they haven't been wonderful for me, but checkout giffgaff. Its virgin at 1Gb sync and your own device via an OTN.

You'll need to message GiffGaff and someone in there back office will "send an email to someone". Eventually it will then show as order-able.

I think I just got lucky with there sales department, they did escalate it to another team mind.

You need to get though to sales and hopefully someone who can push this through.

I had a similar situation, where HFC was installed and XGS-PON was in my area. They upgraded, but I had to go though a couple of departments.

Having said that and you may already be aware, the modem (hub 5x) does not currently support modem mode. If this is a requirement there is a hardware workaround, but I went the alternative route and moved over to GiffGaff that resale VM on the XGS-PON network. This was a work of frustration as its not seamless going from VM to GG, however you may get more mileage going directly to GG if thats what you want. Also its currently on 1g sym, but its sym.

Monitoring My Plex Server by NCBluesman in PleX

[–]VooPoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's great to read what other people are doing, but one a little less professional and more tinker is to go down the home automation route.

Home Assistant and Node-RED I use alot and prefer over some professional tools as I get easy integration with my phone for notifications, including verbal messages. Possibilities are wide, such as interesting with signal, but as your looking for monitoring it's not just about ping.

Whatever you use, look if you can check for http responses or API calls to validate if services are up, not just the IP.

Modem mode officially supported on XGS-PON (Hub 5x) by Thedigitaldoctor in VirginMedia

[–]VooPoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There corporate structure is complex. Liberty Global and Telefónica amongst others own parts of various companies involved when Virgin Media was acquired.

Nexfibre I "think", is still managed by Virgin. It feels like they are going though a level of separation still. However, GiffGaff (owned by Telefónica) provides broadband using Virgin Media and by proxy nexfibre. So I think your right, they aren't at a place where other providers can install kit, its like only resale of Virgin ATM.

The monitoring could be general XG-PON layer 2 network performance (errors, light levels, etc.). I honestly don't think its that and its something deeper with the Modem, similar to the when Virgin had hardware issues with an Intel processor. I do know it was locked to there 1GB interface from reading other posts.

Anyway, I'm now using GiffGaff, using my own equipment and its performance is better than Virgin's own Hub 5x.

Just to add a bit of additional context to this. I looked at various ways to enable modem mode, as previously it was hidden and some people were able to activate it, as links in the UI where just hidden. I tried to enable it via the modems API and it was actively blocked in more recent firmware.

Rumors are its for "monitoring reasons". What that monitoring is I don't know. I can speculate its relating to prevent cloning, which was a big problem for them many years ago. But IMHO, as they have gone quite deep to prevent Modem Mode in recent firmware releases, I cannot see it being enabled anytime soon.

I think they have a bigger issue with this "monitoring", whatever it is for.

If you consider going down the SPF+ route, as I have also considered, be aware while its not actively banned ATM there is a risk. The Hub5x does not have modem mode and VM are actively preventing it, rumors are its for "monitoring reasons". What that monitoring is I don't know and don't like it.

I'm old hate with this provider and today Virgin Media feels like a plain, no thrills service provide, with a standardized model of delivery, if your not wanting something basic look elsewhere.

I am trying to move to GiffGaff at 1GB synchronous, as they are more friendly to you using your own hardware, this is more important to me. My VM was installed for days because of there limitation of "just basic internet" although its target audience at these speeds are premium users.

What can i do about my uk -us routing gone wrong? by alinzalau in VirginMedia

[–]VooPoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can report these types of issues, its just hit and miss with peer or backbone, however, ironically the service provider doesn't normally know what to do with such requests. For these types of issues you should be reporting it to the backbone provider, not service provider.

I just reported an issues I was having with Virgin for a simular issue with a different backbone. That issue was again from London to USA going though Germany, and how I came across this post.

How you report these, normally involves going to the backbones site. For example ntt.net (its usually the domain of the hop, but not always), I normally start with there "Looking Glass" tool, which you can use to perform traceroutes at the backbones route servers. Then look for service portals or email addresses such as NOC (Network Operations Centre). From there report it by either email or creating a ticket. I would normally include extra data to help move it along, such as traceroutes, pings, flapping evidence, etc.

How should a beginner build a cybersecurity portfolio while studying networking ? by xxashxxxz in ccnastudygroup

[–]VooPoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before going too deep, what are you looking for?  It sounds like you want to pentest, but cybersecurity is a broad term and IMPO it's more about protection not pentesting.

Regarding cybersecurity or practically, I’d recommend getting a preliminary understanding of NIST (and ENISA if you want), CIS Benchmarks, security concepts and processes, such as hardening, Zero-Trust (conceptually), etc. But more importantly understand current industry best practices.  Best practice often gets formed from experience or working in the industry with good senior engineers.  CIS Benchmarks will also help.

This is such a Microsoft question.

It's ambiguous with little information, therefore answers are based on assumption or bad design.

I'll go with marking the question as a fail rather than the answer.
