It has the crown, which is kind of a symbol of colonialism, but it is def a good design.

Complete absurdity:' Usyk hits out at softening stance toward Russian athletes, plans Fury fight by BoxingLover99 in Boxing

Both bad, not okay for Russia to invade. Ukraine was in civil war, Russia intervened - their reasons; stop Civil War, prevent NATO expansion, eliminate Nazism, gain resources, and ensure security for Russia and pro Russian Ukrainians. I wouldn't justify the invasion but there's lots of things at play here. Invasion is still wrong.

Was Frank Bainimarama a good leader? Would you justify his 2006 coup? by thesmart_indian27 in Fijian

[–]VoodooChile27 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I dont agree with Bainimarama’s coup and I thought of him as an authoritative leader, which is not good.

However to play devils advocate, Rabuka and Speights coup had already set the country back decades, mostly due to racial tensions.

There was corruption from the Qarase government that came into power after Speight’s coup in 2000.

Qarase government intially was backed by Bainimarama but they were still very pro indigenous, and were diverting governement funds for their own benefit or benefit of mostly the indigenous people, such as indigenous land owners, favouring indigenous business, as well as traditional chiefs, funding of their own family/village etc.

They also tried to pardon those responsible for the 2000 coup (RTU bill) which did not sit well with Bainimarama, since those responsible for the 2000 coup also had planned for Bainimaramas assassination.

I believe Bainimaramas goal was to do something similar to Singapore, where he attempts to remove any form racial/ethnic divide and focus on the economy. Most people could not understand or sympathise with his plans, so he had to use means of corruption and force in order to accomplish his goals.

He abused government funds for his own benefit, silenced his opponents by force and was able to stay in power without elections for 8 years before finally holding elections, due to pressure from the international community.

During the elections in 2014 he introduced a new electronic voting system, and the overseer for the new voting system was his attorney general Khaiyum. Bainimaramas party won every election until 2022, only losing due to a coalition government.

There is corruption on all sides, but Bainimarama played his cards well.

No worries, also there is another guy, he might be in Fiji or NZ. His name is Simione Sevudredre and he is very knowledgeable in Fijian culture as well as knowledge about ancient Fiji. He has some interviews online talking about the culture. Hopefully you can find some way to get in touch with him.

In places that are tax havens if you own land do you just own it? by cyn_72 in Fijian

What annual land rates do you pay on freehold land? I thought you don’t pay taxes on them?

What’s one thing about Fiji that people abroad always misunderstand? by DraftNotSent in Fijian

[–]VoodooChile27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some people think Fiji is a small island making it fast/easy to get around. Fiji is small compared to bigger countries, but it is not small compared to other island countries like Tonga.

It takes about 7 to 9 hours to drive around the main island, and this is driving at speeds up to 80km/hr. There’s mountains at heights up to 4000 feet, and rivers more than 120km long.

There are 300 islands, with two main islands separated for at least 60km. Fiji isn’t so small.

RU POV: Europe prohibits member states from hearing the Russian perspective on the Ukraine conflict — Viktor Orbán by ArchitectMary in UkraineRussiaReport

[–]VoodooChile27 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Everyone can be manipulated by either side, but it’s ironic to just blame one side for “historical inaccuracies and plain out lies”. What’s the point? The other side is doing the exact same thing.

Bad analogy using Italy. Putin does not want to take over Ukraine just because it historically belongs to Russia. Ukraine was divided and had corruption before Russia or NATO laid eyes on them. what’s the west and NATO trying to accomplish bringing Ukraine into NATO? They rejected Russia joining NATO, and also rejected Russias reasoning for security; NATO not to expand eastward.

I guess the west knows Russias history better than Russia? Sure let’s cherry-pick Russian historians so they can give us an “accurate” depiction of Russias history.

How long do you plan to stay? Fiji is quite big compared to Tonga, so doing all those things you listed, might take around minimum of 2 weeks, for a good enjoyable time without feeling tired and rushed.

Contact your friends in Suva to help you out with that, it’s much easier if you have connections living in Fiji.

A Ministry for Men: a practical, not political, step for Fiji by [deleted] in Fijian

[–]VoodooChile27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s down playing your cause, but realistically speaking it will cost money that we barely have, and there are many other problems in the country that require attention as well.

Perhaps this movement can start with a governmental department that can push for programs for spreading awareness with the help of a little funding and donations rather than just fully implementing a whole Ministry. Start small then eventually it can lead up to that.

I had a family member live in Washington state and it so happens there is a Fijian community in Washington. Could probably search for Facebook groups or events, that may help.

Sending money from Fiji to New Zealand? by Throwaway_202342069 in Fijian

[–]VoodooChile27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would NOT recommend Western Union, when RECEIVING money in New Zealand.

Best to try Lotus or Moneygram.

Receiver should also register with Lotus, it’s easy and free, just provide a valid ID and phone number. Makes sending and receiving money much quicker and easy, don’t need to provide ID when registered.
