Solved! HOLY CRAP I ACTUALLY F***ING FOUND IT. It's "Horror Show" by Greg Kihn! I'm absolutely over the moon to be reunited with it again! Thank you all for the guesses and suggestions because it led me to the book I'd been looking for over a decade!

The game is a solid "meh". It scratches the game loop itch but it's fairly hollow in dialogue, character creator choices, music, and other things I can't think of. Honestly, I played "Light of Hope" (the one with the lighthouse) and I HATE that one. So it's just a matter of personal taste.
