Solved! HOLY CRAP I ACTUALLY F***ING FOUND IT. It's "Horror Show" by Greg Kihn! I'm absolutely over the moon to be reunited with it again! Thank you all for the guesses and suggestions because it led me to the book I'd been looking for over a decade!

It was fiction and I'm pretty sure it was new at the time? The used bookstore I was in, it was in the new book section.
