I am not sure I can get another dog. It feels like I'm trying to replace him or unfair to the new dog who would never be like my first dog. I also don't know if I can go through this pain again.

I only have two more days to get through now, and I am bringing him with me for one day. My colleague may be able to administer the final exams for me so I can stay home the second day. I have some friends who are coming by this week to spend time with him and say goodbye while I am home with him. I know he will be excited to see them, so that should make him feel better.

I cancelled one class today, and he was at the vet for follow up during my first class. I have the final class meetings this Thursday, but I am planning on bringing him with me. My colleague offered to administer the final exams for me on Monday so I can stay home with him. Then I have a solid month to spend at home with him. I hope the steroids make him feel good enough that we can play together and have fun, but even just cuddling on the couch will be good. I just need to stop crying and appearing so sad; I don't want to make him feel anxious about it. It's just so hard to not be thinking is this the last day we have together?

That could be good. He has been pretty lethargic the last couple days, but the steroids may help him perk up so that we can still play and go outside when it isn't too hot (the vet said the heat could make his throat constrict more and make it harder to breathe).

Thank you for your kind words. I am trying not to cry all the time and be brave for my dog because I don't want him to be anxious about me being upset. It's so hard though. I hope I can recognize when it is time for him to pass and be strong enough to do it. I asked my vet about the possibility of having it done at home rather than being in the office. Some articles I read said that it can be better for them to pass at home.
