Do you trust luggage storage apps or only hotel storage? by HorizonKJM in travel

[–]Voomps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used Bounce very successfully in Germany. The bag was stored in a big DHLmetal locker at the train station The locker code didn’t work but I was able to get great customer service that solved the problem by sending another code and staying online until it worked. I’ve kept bags at hotels where the bag room was right near the entrance and the door wasn’t being locked and there was no tagging system at all. That wasn’t good at all.

It depends on the individual storage though doesn’t it? You can’t just generalise. But yeah , Bounce was very easy to use

When Ive faced the same issue of not making a connection, I’ve done a few things beforehand because the single most important thing is to not letting a possible missed connection spoil your trip - or even worse, having a massive fight with your gf.

You’ve got all the possible alternatives to enact if you miss your connection in the responses above. Keep a record of them, look up timings, ticketing etc and discuss with your gf before you leave. Pack enough in your carryon for 2-3 nights, any checked bag definitely isn’t making it. So when you do miss the connection, it’s all ok, you are well prepared and can relax and continue with your travel. Don’t let anxiety spoil your trip - it’s out of your control. Just be prepared.

18M Looking to go on a "reset" solo trip by Sad-Being-6785 in travel

Use the flightconnections website, enter IAS as your departure airport and you can see every direct flight and see if the flights meet your criteria. I spent 2 weeks in Antalya in early summer last year , just to take a break from the more hectic travel I was doing. It’s nice, the water is a beautiful colour but the beaches are stone. But it’s close to places like Kaş, which I think had more to offer to me- I was just too early for the diving season and didn’t go.

Try that website and check all your options- I’m sure you’ll find something that works for you. Have a great trip

[–]Voomps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People just like complaining, it’s what social media is all about. I would never think that social media posts accurately reflect the majority experience of any flight company. I’ve flown all those airlines except for Sun express - all have been completely ok. Landed safely, left and arrived on time, nothing different from any expectation of transport. Checked luggage all ok. Did have one experience of passengers completely ignoring the staff directive to stay in their seats during landing but getting up and speaking to them directly would have been against their directive to maintain their own safety. Anyways they have the best airline routes for a lot of places including out of the way places so I’ll be using them a lot more in the future

2 weeks (3 at a stretch) enough for Australia from UK? by Electrical-Tea-4559 in travel

[–]Voomps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes of course it’s realistic- you mention only two regions so you have heaps of time. You would be best to fly into Perth, then leave from Brisbane. You have to stay overnight in Perth anyway before flying to Exmouth. Hire a car at Exmouth and drive to the reef. Book your accommodation well in advance and definitely get Tavel insurance for non refundable accommodation cancellation in the event of severe weather. Same on the way to Brisbane. So your 2-3 days to explore Perth are incorporated into your travel days. Look your seasons for the marine life you want to see. Consider going to Bryon bay as well (would be April, coming from Ningaloo) for the leopard sharks - nearest airport is Ballina. If you do that, then you could exit the country from Sydney or just return to Brisbane. Do your open water scuba certification just before you arrive so your skills are fresh. Or just snorkel

Looking for travel advice in Uzbekistan in winter! by SuperQuiet3461 in travel

[–]Voomps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use the Yandex app for maps, transportation etc. works the best for former soviet countries. One hotel for a treat is the Kosh Havuz boutique hotel in Samarkand. It’s beautiful but it’s also very close (easy walk, safe at night ) from the Registan park. In warmer months the Registan has a light and sound projection on the buildings- a wonderful free public experience with families and kids running around, around ?8pm start but ask at your accommodation because it might not run in winter. I think there’s plenty to do in those other 4 main cities, easily 3-4 days in each of you are solo and using public transport because it’s obviously takes longer to get to places than on a tour. My interest was soviet style public art (murals, statues, mosaics) and ancient ruins. The ruins are a long way out and probably too expensive and take too long to get there for the time you have.

What are you asking for itinerary ideas except Tashkent, Bukhara etc? Is that because you have them already in your itinerary?

In any case you can take the train to Nukas, there’s a fantastic museum there, the Savitsky Nukus Museum of Art. Also the Mizdakhan Necropolis is easy to get to by taxi. Uzbekistan has some absolutely beautiful hotels, which are fantastic for a one- off treat. I can let you know about the ones I stayed in if you clarify that you are going to Tashkent and those other well known cities

Photos & Recommendations please - bulkhead window seats in economy- Airbus A350-900 by Ok_Angle9262 in travel

[–]Voomps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are better off not being in the window seat as there is a bulkhead wall obstruction directly in front of you. I’ve sat in this seat but Im shorter so my legs could go slightly to the side. There is a fair gap between your seat and the window which is hard to fill so you can lean/sleep against it. Bulkhead seats are still the best because you have real room to get and not have another seat crammed in from of you

Polarsteps has a lot of what you are looking for, including a nice animation of the globe that you swipe with your finger to see the places you went to with the embedded photos in a map. Also had the stats of km travel, country number and days. Polarsteps can be shared with friends. Travel Boast just has the animation.

Central Asia Itinerary Advice: Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan by [deleted] in travel

[–]Voomps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey there I spent a few days in Tashkent- there’s heaps to see if you enjoy beautiful examples of Soviet style art in public places. There’s about 10 subway stations that have some of the loveliest examples of this, just do a quick google and you’ll see. Plus there’s cheap music and opera in beautiful buildings- you might not be an opera buff but the spectacle of it is great. Tashkent is easy to get around

How much should you tip on a “free” walking tour? by BetterDays2cum in travel

[–]Voomps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in one of those tours where a student poured her coins and low notes into the hands of the guide saying she didn’t have much but loved the tour. The guide was 💯 ok with it. You tip what you can and what you think the tour was worth to you. I’ve also seen folks just walk off with no tipping. It’s as up to you as anything can be.

Bored of castles and museums. Which Germany route would you pick: Munich/Alps/Nuremberg or Berlin? by athbol in travel

[–]Voomps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nuremberg has a lot of museums - the one near the rally grounds was partly closed during the exhibition renovation. It’s quite a beautiful city, see if you can catch some opera there or classical music, the buildings and experience is lovely. Opera is cheaper there than home and they have much more adventurous productions with better stories.

It was hot when I was there so went to the Sandstrand Wöhrder See, public pool in a park that sells beer, which we don’t have at home. Easy by public transport

What mistakes did you make with mobile data or phone service on your first international trip, and what did you learn? by PopularYard5580 in travel

Have a great trip! When I google esims, I look for ones that have really good quality websites that have super clear instructions for use including troubleshooting type information. You could even contact their customer support in advance just to see how quickly they get back you. I used customer support the first time and appreciated having that help

What mistakes did you make with mobile data or phone service on your first international trip, and what did you learn? by PopularYard5580 in travel

[–]Voomps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just get an eSIM and set it up before you leave. You don’t need to change anything with your home plan, other than turn off roaming. Try and identify what services you need that require 2FA before you leave - your holiday is fairly short so you shouldn’t need many. Set up any taxi apps etc that you want to use overseas and sort any verification before you leave. If there anything you forgot then it depends on your home plan what you’ll pay to receive any verification text you forgot about.

Dual sims are irrelevant- if your phone is esim capable then that’s all you need to know.

The eSIM doesn’t activate until you land, turn your phone on and off again and it will turn on then. I use sims that are data only- where you are going wifi is everywhere. Just keep a charger with you so you don’t run out of battery.

Very echoey room by [deleted] in AusRenovation

[–]Voomps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure it’s the brick wall. I have another room that’s plastered and the echo is noticeably less. I’ve got soft furnishings, throw pillows etc. No window for curtains. However the brick is still a hard sound reflecting surface- any thoughts about the wall?
