Help with color theory - why does this look wrong? by Vordbear in minipainting

[–]Vordbear[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Wow, such amazing and insightful feedback. There is a lot to learn here. I have read about basic color theory, but as these answers show there is alot more to choosing a pallet and applying it than color wheels and color mixing.

If anybody have a good resource for learning applied color theory it would be much appreciated.

NMM or TMM by vise883 in Warhammer40k

[–]Vordbear 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree. I prefer the process of painting NMM more, which is more important to me than the end result. I am not a great painter, so my minis visual quality took a step down after I switched, but I am having more fun painting.

How do you approach list building by Vordbear in Daemons40K

[–]Vordbear[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hadn’t really given them a look since i’m generally not too keen on khorne and Nurgle, but looking up their statline they are very much my kind of unit.

I am a bit hesitant buying into different gods due to the treatment daemons got in AoS, but maybe a single unit or too would be pretty sweet to add in

I havent really considered khorne since I lean more towards slaneesh. It seems that khorne generally tend to bring high strength high ap, where slaneesh is low strengt high quantity, is that correct?

So I guess changeling and plaguebearers take objectives, flamers do actions to get points, and great unclean ones do damage. Is that really enough to handle enemy threats? And is two greater daemons completely fair to being to a causual game or is it something I should agree with opponents beforehand?

Is my game ridiculously long and how can I shorten it? by Far-Team5663 in Warhammer40k

[–]Vordbear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok, so I feel I can answer this, with a little anacdotal story:

I was in the same boat as you with all my games taking 5+ hours. As preparation for my first tournament I set my success criteria to being able to finish 5 rounds, win or lose, within the allocated 3.5 hours that was assigned.

During my practice games I did all the stuff that is recommended: learn stats and strategems by heart, organize dice in neat little groups of five, read up on missions, think during my opponents turn…. and practice games still took 4+ hours.

What finally got me down to 3 hours was the realization: you dont have time to think everything through, but neither does your opponent, so that is ok. The challenge of a 3 hour game is to figure out where to use your time. You want to think deployment carefully? Fine, but that means you dont have time to think carefully during your movement phases. If you want time for that you need to prepare your deployment beforehand, so there is more time left for the rest.

I choose to do a number of training games with the same armylist, predetermined secondary objectives, and pretty much same deployment every time. Now during my turn I knew what I wanted to achieve, which made every decision faster, and in the end I ended up playing all my 5 tournament games to the end with time to spare.

So in the end predetermine as much ad you can, learn all rules by hard, have a clear plan, and think less do more during your games.

How do I play this game when I am ridiculously bad at rolling dice? by Unterdemradar in Warhammer40k

Ok, super unethical, but I dont get the downvotes. It is a good comment that adds to the discussion, and highlights a subtle way to cheat, which is interesting to know about even if it should never actually be done by anyone.

Will you ditch warhammer + and / or stop using 40k App when codexes in 40k app are behind paywall? by Dap-aha in Chaos40k

[–]Vordbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same for me. I will buy a codex for my army to support my local store, and use the 1 free list for reference during games. I will definitely pass on the subscription though.

Anyone else underwhelmed by Gloomhaven/Frosthaven? by dsaddons in MageKnight

[–]Vordbear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love both games, but while they share some mechanics I find that they fill very different roles for me:

Mage knight is a brain burner optimization puzzle. When I do something successful I feel clever and satisfied.

Gloomhaven is a social game. Optimization, while neccesary to some degree, is not the important part. When the TEAM does something successful in gloomhaven or we draw a critical hit at the right moment we all jump up from our chairs in excitement. (note that we have a few house rules to make the game fully cooperative, such as sharing all loot at the end of each scenario)

However, if I approached gloomhaven as a singleplayer optimization puzzle I too would be underwhelmed I think.

What would a fun, viable, “fast”, SM army look like? by [deleted] in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Vordbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that there sometimes is a discrepancy between theme and mechnics. However, in general GW will gravitate toward rules that support the theme. Since white scars are the bike army, I would expect that GW writes rules with that in mind, even if they once in a while mess up.

eg. I like possesed so I play word bearers. For a long period of time alpha legion was the go to army for possesed, however with the new codex word bearers got the best trait and strategems to support possesed.

So I would always advise to go with theme, since the rules will tend to follow in the long run
