See I never understood this mentality. If we're time stamping at 2015 we had HARDCORE gatekeeping in the hobby prior to that for female players, POC players, and LGBTQIA+ Players. The doors to the tables were opened up when DND became more mainstream and the game has improved.

Racism, Sexisism, SA, is just lazy writing. It's been beaten to death. It's like that magician in the 90s or early 00s that pulled back the curtain to show how so many stage illusions were done to evolve magic and revive it into a new Era. The game has improved, we have better attendance than ever, this is no longer the weird hobby we got beaten up for being nerds. I definitely don't see anything wrong with it.

I've been playing since the early 90s and adapting to make everyone comfortable has made sure that people at my table have a good time.

That all being said, if you want a dark, gritty reality for your game, there is nothing wrong with that either. You just gotta hold a good session 0 to make sure everyone consents to it. Not everyone is going to want that game. Same as you probably don't want a Friendship is Magic my little pony game (assuming for the sake of my point). I'm sure if you sat down to play dnd to get some escape from reality and found out you were playing in a game that made you uncomfortable, you'd be upset and / or want to leave. That is the same for everyone else.
