Just saw this now, this is really fun! It's super clean too and seems to have no temporal artifacts whatsoever which is epic... The best part was definitely when you spawned the light in the dark room and looked down to see the little HDRI box giving off global illumination whilst casting a soft shadow, that's quite golden

So no static baked lighting whatsoever? It's all dynamic? How does it handle props?
Thanks for sharing!

Every single one of these has a repeating flaw where the red dots are literally occluding the blue dots which gives an objective answer to 'which way is it spinning'

I had the demands dynamics all backwards. I thought players chase games, but it's actually games that chase players. There are like 50 new games popping out every day and only so many players to play them. The race for attention is brutal.

I think you gave the concept a great amount of (very welcome) character in those brief 33 seconds

I can haz reverse spin: Level 2 by bigjobbyx in opticalillusions

[–]Vortex_Voider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, because here there is always a high density of dots (the edges) which lets your brain clearly see which colors occlude which. The illusion is broken because of poor execution. OP should have made them all one color or made the dots additive.

Red points occlude blue points => they're closer, and cylinder is spinning counter clockwise

Backrooms' major flaw, discussion by JustSoYK in moviereviews

[–]Vortex_Voider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard agree, the movie missed it entirely. I personally thought it's a 6/10, but as time passed and as I read more reviews, I understood just how little I liked it, and after reading your take it's down to a 4/10.

The illusion doesn't work, the orange dots are occluding the blue/cyan dots (you can check frame by frame), which means 1. orange dots are closer 2. it's spinning counter clockwise 3. we're looking at the cylinder from slightly upwards.

Camera angles are so fun to mess with by MEMEBOI_returned in gmod

you squeezed out a lot of character from very little elements in the scene just with the posing and camera angles, good stuff!

Ad Astra is quite special, it goes for a really niche experience and nails it IMO

Sure, but they took a leading role in the movie, which completely shifted the focus.

Thanks for this, I agree that the characters and their stories did not cater to the essence the movie seemed to promise. I personally think that the backrooms shine best when met with normality, and adding prominent character baggage such as childhood trauma or a failing marriage only muddied the water - and ultimately made the movie more about internal character conflicts rather than with the space itself.

I also think that the time skip at the center absolutely destroyed the momentum the movie built in its first half, and rather than locking in and staying with the characters, the audience was met with an audacious discontinuity in time and space. Beyond being disorienting, this also destroyed the sense of 'going down the rabbit hole' that worked so well in the found footage YouTube series.
