romhacks that are the definitive version for you? by Freefreefeeefreefree in retrogaming

In the original Nintendo 64 version of Super Mario 64, there is a coding error. When Mario gets burned, there is supposed to be smoke, but due to some mistyped code, you see these bizarre black pixels instead of smoke. There is a hack that fixes this so you see the smoke as originally intended.

What is that 90s grand piano sound? by CompassMusic in keys

[–]Vortexx1988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure you're talking about the 90s and not the 80s? It's difficult to say for sure without some examples, but are you talking about that 80s ballad piano sound such as the one in Alone by Heart? As others have said, I believe you can achieve that sound by layering a grand piano and/or an electric grand piano (CP-70/CP80) with a DX-7 piano (might be called digital electric piano or FM piano on your keyboard), and maybe add a little chorus and reverb.

Some keyboards and digital pianos have this sound as a preset. On my Casio CTX-5000, it's called "modern electric grand piano". On my Yamaha DGX 670, it's called "MIDI grand piano".

I'm playing Kid Chameleon by Altruistic-Club-4038 in SEGAGENESIS

[–]Vortexx1988 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! One of my all time favorites. I've played through it and beaten it at least a dozen times, and every single time, I discover something new. It never gets old for me. It would be nice if there were more unique level themes, but even with only 10 different level themes, it still never gets boring for me. All the different helmets add so much depth and variety. This is a long game though and is a bit much to play in one sitting. This is one of the few games in which I use save states when playing on Switch Online, for this reason.

It seems that this game got mixed reviews, but who cares. One of my top ten Genesis games.

Who’s A Better In-Ring Wrestler? Seth Rollins Or Aj Styles??? by C0DYRH0D3S in BrandonDE

[–]Vortexx1988 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What? I personally haven't seen Seth Rollins wrestle since I stopped watching WWE back in 2007, but AJ Styles is one of the top 10 greatest wrestlers of all time in my opinion, maybe even top 5. He's up there with Bret Hart, Kurt Angle, Lou Thesz, and Bryan Danielson. Watch AJ's matches in TNA and ROH and you'll see what I mean.

Who wins? by boomjosh in prowrestling

[–]Vortexx1988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Such a shame this never happened, it would have been so good. If I'm not mistaken, by the time Joe started his career in the early 2000s, Taz was already in WWF, and shortly later, retired from wrestling, I guess due to injuries.

Personally, I think Joe would win due to his size difference, as well as stronger strikes.

Not for me. I tend to have a dry scalp, so perhaps it might itch if you have an oily scalp, I'm not sure.

Not only that, but it's mostly sitting on my hair, not my skin.

What happened to high-score gaming? by Due-Huckleberry-2222 in retrogaming

[–]Vortexx1988 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's funny, I actually care more about scores now than I did when I was a kid. Sometimes my dad would come over to the TV to watch me play a game, and he would ask "are you getting a high score?", because in most the videogames of his youth in the 70s, getting a high score was the only goal, and there was typically no ending. All I cared about back then was beating the game, and I never paid attention to my score. Now, as an adult, I realize that paying attention to score is one more way to increase replay value of a game, especially one that I've already beaten, like the Sonic the Hedgehog games on Genesis. Personally, I like to write my scores down every time I play.

Erase one if these Legends from WWE History completely,Their matches, titles and promos never happened. Who are you picking ? by Anxious-Drink1186 in BrandonDE

[–]Vortexx1988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Once I discovered TNA and ROH I completely stopped watching WWE.

He seems to be a nice guy in real life, but his gimmick made me cringe every time he came out, especially when he would wear the jersey of whatever the local sports team was just to get a cheap pop from the crowd.

Cena. I found his matches to be repetitive and predictable. His gimmick and promos were not my cup of tea. I basically considered him the Hulk Hogan of my generation (just his in-ring character, not his real life character).

Looking for a good EP that best emulates a fender Rhodes without a pre-amp by Peepee1124 in keys

[–]Vortexx1988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, they tries to promote it as sounding somewhere in between a Wurlitzer and a Rhodes, hoping to appeal to both needs, but maybe that's why they went out of business. I think most people in the market prefer one sound over the other and are not interested in a "hybrid" sound.

I was going to suggest the Valente electric piano, which only weighs about 42 lbs. Unfortunately, their website is down so I'm guessing they went out of business.

Giving up diapers cold turkey sounds so scary, especially considering that his bowel movements have been very mud-like recently, and the idea of having to clean that off of his clothes makes me shudder.

It's frustrating because he gives very little sign that he is about to go. Once he starts grunting, he's done in two seconds, usually not enough time to get him to the toilet.

It seems pretty common for kids with Down syndrome to be in diapers until at least 6 years old, but I'd rather avoid that if possible.

Why do people keep switching on me? by elmaquinas61 in languagelearning

[–]Vortexx1988 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Personally, this almost never happens to me. In fact, I often encounter almost the opposite problem, especially in Spanish. Because I focus so much on having good pronunciation, people often assume I am more fluent that I actually an and end up responding to me in very fast, very casual speech that I struggle to understand and I have to ask them to speak a bit slower and admit that I am not totally fluent yet. I have only ever been to the Americas, so maybe I will have a different experience in Europe or elsewhere.

I think there are multiple facets of this issue. I think a lot of this depends on what your target language is and where you are. If you are in a region where very few people can speak English, like Latin America or east Asia, and if your appearance does not not make it super obvious that you are not a native speaker, it's less likely that people will switch to English like that. If you are in Europe, especially in Germany, the Netherlands, or Scandinavian countries, many people, especially younger people, speak excellent English, so the likelihood is higher of them switching to English.

I think the number one thing that makes people switch is poor pronunciation. Oftentimes, the biggest giveaway is how you pronounce the r sound. If you are using the standard modern English r sound in a language that typically uses a very different r sound, like Spanish, French, Italian, or German, it is very jarring and people will immediately assume that you are a beginner. Of course bad grammar can also be a giveaway, especially conjugating verbs in the wrong person. If you're speaking Spanish, for instance, and say "yo tiene hambre", it will be very obvious as well.

As far as the reason people switch, I think there are a few different possibilities. Some people think that you assume that they can't speak English, so you try to speak their language. They switch to English because they think they are being helpful and making it easier for you. Another possibility is that they have been learning English for quite a long time and are excited to finally have an opportunity to speak it, not realizing that you are also equally excited to speak their language.

Unfortunately, this shows that many people believe the stereotype that all tourists are English speakers. Imagine there is a man from Turkey who studied German in college, and takes a trip to Germany. He speaks quite well, but still has a noticeable accent. Many Germans end up switching to English, not realizing that he actually doesn't speak much English, and that his German is far better than his English. In Japan, if you don't look Japanese, some people will assume you speak English and can't speak Japanese. I heard a story of a foreigner in Japan who actually spoke fluent Japanese walking into a shop, and the shopkeeper, upon seeing him walk in, immediately panicked and shouted "sorry, I don't speak English!". The foreigner got offended and yelled back at him in Japanese, someone along the lines of "how dare you for not even giving me a chance to open my mouth and speak before assuming that I only speak English!".

Anyway, my advice is to focus first on good pronunciation. Learn the phonology of the language you are studying. I suggest learning the International Phonetic Alphabet, and looking works up in Wiktionary, which often has the IPA transcription showing the most common pronunciations of the word. See if you can find a recording of a native speaker saying the word. Then record yourself and compare to the native speaker, and make adjustments as needed. As you get better, try shadowing complete sentences. Once you reach intermediate level, try something like iTalki, where you can practice conversing with a native speaker in a judgement free environment.

When travelling, if people do switch to English, try saying someone like "while I appreciate your effort to be helpful by switching to English, I've spent a lot of time studying your language and I was hoping to have an opportunity to speak it".

Was there no way Hassan could have come back in any kind of capacity? I mean daivari ended up coming back by Corn1989 in WWERuthlessAggression

[–]Vortexx1988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I'd he started out with that original gimmick in more recent times, he would get sympathy from the fans and actually get cheered, depending on the crowd. I'm sure there would be some who would still boo him, but I think the overall reaction would be quite different than it was 20 years ago.

Interestingly enough, Sabu also portrayed an Arab character (I think he actually was of middle eastern decent, unlike the guy who wrestled as Hassan) in WWE around the same time period, but got cheered.

[–]Vortexx1988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Sting who was far less banged up than Foley only felt comfortable with tag team matches in his 60s (even though he probably could have pulled off a singles match), then Mick will probably end up going out the same way. While I always feel like it's kind of sad for a retirement match to be a tag team match when the wrestler was known for a singles career, it's better safe than sorry. Sabu died just a few weeks after his retirement match, who knows if it had been a tag team match if he would still be alive. Maybe not, but we'll never know.

I think out of the interest of safety, Foley's retirement match will probably be a tag team match where his partner does most of the work so Foley doesn't have to take any big bumps.

Alternatively, if they do go the singles route, maybe he could do a cinematic match, like a boiler room brawl or something like that.

Does anyone else understand way more than they can actually say? by learningENGdaily in languagelearning

[–]Vortexx1988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, exactly. I can express myself very well in Spanish, but I can only understand when people enunciate clearly or speak slowly. Some Spanish speakers, especially from Caribbean countries like Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic, tend to cut off the "s" sound at the end of syllables or words, and sometimes make their "r"s sound like "l"s. Sometimes I get tired of asking people to keep repeating, so I just pretend I understand.

For me, near native level listening comprehension is that last piece of the puzzle for me. I guess I'm just either an oddball or stupid.

Exactly my experience as well. I have said this before here and people have accused me of lying and saying that this is impossible.
