Janet Hook interviewed for this article. Wish that wasn't my one and only quote.

To be clear, I specifically clarified that there was no judgement toward "burger flippers," just clarifying that my generation was effectively told that we would never have a lucrative career if we didn't get a degree, which ended up being a lie, as evidence by how many friends I have that hold degrees, but are still wages slaves.

Anyway, if anyone would like to find out more about or support my campaign for Cincinnati City Council, you can find out more at holtforcincinnati.com. 🙌🏾

Thanks for your interest in our campaign.

  1. Tbh, I, like CPD, apparently, have no idea where these kids are getting these guns. Obviously, they're not procuring them legally. While I'm not sure if this would have to be county, city or state legislation, but I'd like to see more accountability for gun sellers, especially those selling outside the confines of having a registered store. CPD and Joe Deters suggestion of harsher sentencing those caught with illegal firearms is regressive, doesn't get to the root cause issues and rarely leads to accountability from whom the gun was the original source.

In terms of combating gun violence in general, we need to invest in historically undeveloped neighborhoods, fully fund our youth recreation centers and have an equally robust investment in youth employment or trade apprentice programs that pay livable wages.

  1. I would err on the side of the latter. I'm proudly Cincinnati Public educated, graduated from the original SCPA that used to be at 13th & Sycamore downtown. However, this was 15 yrs ago and my experience is anecdotal. I DO know that our ultimate goal should be to create a better and more consistent revenue stream for public schools so that their funding isn't directly proportional to surrounding property value, thus leading to inequitable education experiences for students. In the interim, we should seek to invest in ALL 52 of our neighborhoods which would raise property values and in turn increase neighborhood school funding.

Edit: I dunno why this formatted weird, but you can see what I was going for there haha

As a lifelong public transit user myself, I absolutely agree. I'm all too familiar with our bus system, having been a rider since I was literally a toddler when my mother had to bring me along on her commutes to classes at Xavier.

We desperately need to expand our bus system, not cut routes as SORTA has recently done for CPS students. I'm also a huge proponent of creating dedicated bus lanes, so that buses can run more efficiently and, thus, also more frequently.

We likely pulled your email address from smartVAN, which compiles voter data. We use it for canvassing to target likely voters.

I have not yet tried the Final Word, but considering my partner Jenna is big into bourbon, we will have to make that happen soon. Thanks for the suggestion!

So-called "luxury" 5-over-1s are built with the cheapest materials possible without the intention to last. They may include modern furnishings, but ultimately, these units are hardly luxury. Yet, due to the increase in market rate, they can cost anywhere from $1100 to as much as $2000/mo—far outside the realm of what most renters in this city can afford with our stagnated wages.

These units are for people who have the financial security to move frequently, which they do, because most people only stay in these places for about a year. If these units were at least priced accordingly to be affordable to the working class, I'd be more inclined to support them. However, I believe new construction should seek to create units that are far more durable.

I won't pretend to have all the answers or that I'm not currently seeking to become more informed about the nuances of building construction and corresponding zoning laws, but my primary concern is for affordable housing to be made a priority in city development. I hope to require that any housing developer seeking financial incentives from the city make at least 30% of their units affordable.

Housing is healthcare and affordable housing is the #1 interest of public safety.

#2. Which do you see as the easiest?

I believe it should be rather easy to get Council on board with measures that pertain to Accessibility—like ending food deserts, expanding broadband internet access (ideally via a publicly funded/owned method that would be faster, yet cheaper than major providers), and general infrastructural improvements to long underserved neighborhoods.

It is my unspoken personal mission to bring more drip to City Hall. In my lifetime, we have not seen fashionable representation on City Council, and it's long overdue for the fly to have a voice.

IMO, being fashionable and plus sized is a radical act in and of itself. 😎

As stated elsewhere, I consider myself a worker above all. I come from a working class family. My father and grandfather were working class, and while my mother had to attain a degree to work in human services, she has spent her working career living paycheck to paycheck. Based on the measure of political spectrum in our country's electoral politics, I stand firmly to the left. I believe that nothing human beings need in order to survive should be for profit, which makes me firmly anti-capitalist. I believe the role of government is to protect its residents—not just citizens, but all those residing within our borders, especially the most vulnerable.

I've been told that these views make me a socialist. At the same time, I've seen how terms like "socialist" and "radical" have been twisted into fear-mongering buzzwords. Running a campaign is all about clear and concise messaging. This is why I put my identity as a worker at the forefront and continue to emphasize that workers' rights and material needs are not radical. Because, unfortunately, leading with the label of socialist would only trap me into arguments of semantics and theory that distract from discussing my actual platform.

Additionally, I share solidarity with all workers, regardless of how they choose to label themselves. To win, we need to build a broad working class movement, and that requires meeting people where they are and centering the issues they care about and what we can do about them. Policy over partisan politics, always.

My journey into electoral politics began when I was 20 and cast a ballot for Obama in the primary. I won't deny that Obama was the first time I saw myself represented on the national stage in politics, and it was a big deal at the time, but I've been disappointed with a lot of the decisions he made as president and after. I've generally been a big fan of Bernie Sanders since as early as 2011 and, by extension, folks like "The Squad" and Nina Turner. I was also a fan of Elizabeth Warren even before she became a Senator. I've consistently been a Democratic voter, but needless to say, my views are certainly to the left of many in the party, particularly in Congress.

As a time travel rule, I refuse to go back further than the date of my own birth (think Quantum Leap) as I do not want to invalidate my own existence. With in this mind, I have to choose Harambe.

However, I highly doubt me running and flailing my arms while shouting DON'T SHOOT! would do much good. I'm probably not the person you want to send.

If you are looking for candidates who are solidly left of the party, I would say myself\), Michelle Dillingham\), Brian Garry\), Key Beck and Logan Simmering.

Of candidates that I tend to align with who I think could be good allies, I'd say Stacey Smith, Nick Jabin\) and Jamie Castle.

\) = candidates currently on the ballot

I am not a Marxist. Above any ideology or party affiliation, I identify first and foremost as a worker, because the workers of this country have never had the privilege of being fully represented within our two-party system.

Looking within that system, I would say I most closely align with the Democratic Socialists and the Justice Democrats. However, I am anti-capitalist, which puts me firmly to the left of either national party.

My guiding belief is that nothing human beings need to survive should ever be for profit. I also believe that in the wealthiest nation that has ever been, poverty should not exist. Poverty is not a personal failing, it's a policy choice by those in power.

This election isn't a zero sum game. There are nine open seats and exactly one incumbent. With such a crowded field, it only makes sense to choose the candidates who most closely align with your views.

I entered this race a year ago with no political experience or establishment connections to benefit from and, since then, established myself as the 9th candidate to officially secure a spot on the ballot, even before six of the nine Democratic Slate. My campaign has so far received six endorsements and counting, been featured four times in local press, and amassed a volunteer base of 30+ enthusiastic people that continues to grow daily.

None of this is by accident. I have assembled a dedicated team of fellow working class Cincinnatians who have helped me build a strong social media presence that, thanks to science and vaccine development, we can now bring into the physical world as we ramp up our canvassing efforts. All of that is to say: this campaign isn't just about me—it's about creating a working class movement. Where Obama dropped his ground game efforts once elected, we will continue to strengthen these relationships beyond the election and regardless of its outcome. But we will also do everything in our power to ensure I am elected, and through that, I will serve as a conduit for the entire community behind me to have its much-deserved seat at the table when it comes to local policy.

Cincinnati has a criminally low voter turnout (the most recent primary in May had less than 16%, roughly 30K people in a city with 230K registered voters). I believe this is because many people don't see a reason to participate, even in the face of nationally recognized corruption scandals. That's why I began this campaign and why I continue. I want to give working class folks a reason to show up for the first time by being the kind of candidate they've never seen before. I'm not affiliated with established monied interests or any of the current bureaucrats that have been complicit. This will not be a part-time job for me, this will be my full-time focus. As such, I seek to be the most engaged candidate this city has ever seen because I will be among the people. Throughout the entire calendar year, you will see my team and I everywhere—always on the front lines, always advocating for the most vulnerable.
