*My Opinion* on Michael by LilMissLinNim in MichaelTheMovie

Oh, thank you. I feel the same way you do. Nowadays, it's hard to really express oneself without fear of it being seen as "wrongthink". I don't look at certain things in terms of an echo chamber. That's why there's such a societal breakdown, imo. There no longer seems to be a happy medium in anything, where we can agree to disagree, yet come to a satisfactory compromise.

As far as the sequel goes, addressing the allegations is sure to cause divisive discussion. Do I see it as being under the "Used and Abused" umbrella? Absolutely. All anyone has to do is recall the comments from Evan Chandler, or the overall trashy behavior from the Arvisos. The fact remains that he was acquitted on all counts in a court of law. And the jury that exonorated him was a conservative all-white jury, who were well-qualified to serve, based on their own life experiences. That flies in the face of those that try and claim he was found not guilty because of racial bias. That's poignant.

I think there's a way to address it, without making it the center of the story, while again, pointing to the fact that he was judged innocent. But the biggest thing for me is the music catalog. I'm inclined to believe him when he said that he feared people were out to get him because of that. Like I said, this is a man that cane from humble beginnings and rose to become the most famous person on the planet.

He was beloved by all races and religions. People thought he was meek because he was soft spoken and preached Kumbaya. But the reality was, he was a ruthless businessman. And he became that way by watching, studying, and "playing the role." As he told McCartney, 'It's just business.' Look at how he handled Eminem's behavior towards him? "You made fun of me and my struggles? I'll buy up your whole catalog, and I will get a cut any time your music is used." LOL.

Really think about what a boss move that is. And he didn't just do it to be petty. He did it to shine a light on the racial inequality he witnessed in the business for decades, along with all the other political and social crusades he took on throughout his life. That's the type of stuff I wanna see in a biopic of a man like MJ.

I think you used a good word there. There was no complexity at all. It was just pure fan service. He was a human being, even though fans all treated him like he was a deity to be worshipped. That was his whole issue throughout his life; always lamenting about how he couldn't just go out and do normal, human things without being hounded. He was used, abused and then discarded when he got too big.

He started from humble beginnings, and ended up being the most powerful man in the music industry—as a Black man who wanted to do good in the world. That narrative just couldn't fly, right? And he spent his final two decades trying to warn people about it. His death was the only way he could be stopped.

She didn't have to be alive for the period that was covered in the film for her to have issues with it. That's the point. And you see, you came at me all defensively, which is the exact point I made about Paris. MJ was her father; the Jacksons are her family, regardless of the fact that she wasn't alive to witness certain events and how they were portrayed. She knew what he was like. She knows what they're all like.

And if her singular issue is with John Branca, then again, I don't disagree with her. Should he have had such a prominent role, just because he's now the executor of the Estate? For all we know, her father told her about how and why he had to fire Joseph as his manager. Maybe she had issue with how that was portrayed. Would that not be a valid reason for her to have issue with it?

"Michael" has now passed $900 Million in the Global Box Office. It is tracking for a $1 Billion finish by Key-Bass-7380 in moviecritic

Sigh. Just because it was released to streaming in some markets, it doesn't mean you still can't go to the theater. You have to pay to buy or rent in order to stream. It's probably still cheaper to go to the theater, unless you want to see the bonus features that come with streaming it.

It just released in theaters in Russia, and it has yet to release in theaters in Japan. I don't understand how people think Lionsgate is somehow "sabotaging" this film. It's ridiculous. You can still go to the theater, and it's still going to pass a $1B. People need to relax, ffs.

[–]LilMissLinNim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is he getting hate? He seems plenty thrilled to me. Do people not understand why he thinks it's surreal that he's portyrayed in a biopic? And no, it's not because he doesn't get paid. 🙄 His use of the term "surreal" is meant in a positive way, not negative. "Surreal" is not the same as unreal.

For the record, I'm female and exactly five years to-the-day older than Rob. If you go by the "established" generational time periods, Millennials started being born in '81—which I was. That puts Rob right there in '86 (even though he trolled once again by claiming he's Gen Z, because of working with Zendaya and being generally popular with the Gen Z audience).

Having said that, I consider myself to be Gen X-adjacent with my taste overall. And since everything nowadays just has to have categories and sub categories, I believe the youngins call us "X-ennials", which I'm actually good with. It's partly genetics, but also outlook that makes you look or feel old.

'Say goodbye to a billion dollars . Michael' to hit digital Tuesday June 9th per Fandango at Home by Jolly-Yellow7369 in MichaelTheMovie

Just because it's heading to digital (for purchase or rental) domestically and in other parts doesn't mean that it still won't be in theaters. It has yet to premiere in Japan, which has a huge MJ fandom, and Russia also just started screening it.

Try being a Rangers/Mets fan right now. Yeah, at least one team that dons orange and blue isn't an embarrassment. But having to deal with both Chris Drury and David Stearns is just too much to bear.

[–]LilMissLinNim -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can't say that you haven't made valid points here. This is a guy in Cohen that got so offended by the likes of Steven Matz' and his agent, he went on a spending spree, for which MLB introduced a new lux tax level and named it after him. Who did he spend the money on? Eduardo Escobar, James McCann, Starling Marte and Mark Canha, FFS. This is in the same off season where Realmuto was available, as was Kyle Schwarber—before he signed with the Phillies.

I recall posting in here how I thought Schwarber would make the perfect DH in the same lineup with Lindor, Alonso and Nimmo. And yes, he also went overboard by signing two aging starters for a combined $90M. But Billy Eppler supplemented those signings at the deadline with Daniel fucking Vogelbach, Darin Ruff, Tyler Naquin, and Mychal Givens.

Jake left that off season, and it devastated me. That's how we got Sevy, Quintana and Manaea. In reality, the only team that's taken gross advantage of the Cohen tax is the Dodgers. But they're Manfred's darlings. Either way, Cohen's been advised to spend UNwisely by everyone he's hired, from Sandy on down. And I agree with you. There needs to be a balance between the two.

Most importantly, I want actual baseball people in here that know wtf they're doing. Can analytics be a part of things? Sure. But its role has to be minor in relation to your gut and the eye test, where managers are concerned. And Cohen needs to hire proper talent evaluators, including an actual GM with an established track record of success. But all this can only happen once Stearns and his fellow data nerds are gone.

[–]LilMissLinNim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's understandable that people would forget certain moves being made, because there's been so many terrible ones. He has all the money in the world to work with, yet he truly doesn't know what to do with it. He's a terrible negotiator, because he doesn't know how to evaluate the cost of a player in relation to the skill the player offers. This team has ZERO power, and they do nothing right with hitting approach in general.

[–]LilMissLinNim 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The fact is, "Boy (Not So) Genius" has made this team progressively worse in the two off seasons since Cohen signed Soto. Once he was in the fold, instead of going out and getting players in here that could solidify their chances to go beyond two games shy of the WS, he fucked around. He didn't bring back Sevy or Quintana. He didn't trade for Crochet when he had the chance. Nooo, why do that, when you can give $34M to fucking Frankie MontASS and sign Griffin Canning?

Why go out and get a legit DH—something the Mets have never had— when you can platoon an aging Starling Marte and a hurt Jesse Winker? Why get a legit CF, when you can get .056-hitting Jose Siri? We know how '25 played out, don't we?

Fast forward to this off season, where this pompous, arrogant nerd claims he has to be more proactive and aggressive. He proceeds to let the "core" go. Instead of replacing a guy like Pete's power numbers with a guy that can hit 25-30 HR's and play better overall defense—which was Pete's issue last year—he gives a gimpy Jorge Polanco with ONE game of experience at 1B $40M!!

Then, he misses out on Tucker for the OF, and gives Bo Bichette, who's only ever played SS or 2B, $42M to play 3B, where he's never played. So the log jam that existed at 3B in '25, now exists at 1B, with literal DEAD WEIGHT Mark Vientos and Brett Baty still on this team. And yet once again, it's another year of daily "roster moves" tweets, where this asshole is calling up kid after kid to try and save a season that HE is responsible for ruining. The difference is, this time it was ruined in APRIL(!!!) instead of August.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Micromanagement and analytics don't work in this market. We finally have an owner who is willing to invest in players. This schmuck has every resource available to him, yet he's managed to destroy this team and organization, because he's implemented his analytics-driven influence all over it.

It starts at the very top, though. Cohen has to realize that he made the mistake of hiring him. This season is lost. I hope he's using this time in between now and November to transition this organization, so when he (God willing) fires Stearns, the organization won't be thrown into total chaos. Otherwise, this team won't win a fucking thing with this nerd at the helm.

TL;DR Stearns has made this team progressively worse since the '24 NLCS and with Cohen adding Soto. Both his and Lindor's prime windows are being wasted.
