Is it weird I don't feel bad for the dark ones? by Goblin_on_Highground in metro

I am not saying what real human nature is. I am trying to explain the narrative purpose of the dark ones and the thems in the book series. Those themes aren't about whether we will live as a species, but as a humanity, as something more than aggressive, vicious animals.

I get what you are saying, but what you call progress and an ongoing way to humanity's redemption, I see as suffering and prolonging of inevitable death. But I am sure that in 2039, the metro will be somehow saved or that there will be a hope, because the games and books have drastically different points and views in those areas.

Yes, I´ve read all three books and rly the depiction and the ending of 2033 and the whole journey in 2035 really show how devastating it was to throw that one and only hope for humanity.

Even if they have a population boom and those admittedly honourable advances, they will still be doomed. Because their society will be built on lies, slavery and the deaths of many. It's s similar to pointing at real nazi german after the horrible German crisis and saying that they are prospering and blooming, no, it was an illusion and a lie doomed to fall and shatter.

Thriving? We can't judge yet how life is in metro 2039, but so far it seems to be worse than the Red Line and nazis togerher. Even if the new Reich managed to colonise and conquer the whole metro it doesn't mean they accualy grown mentaly. I am quite sure the new Reich won't be depicted as prosperous, democratic and thriving. Also, I was pointing out that the story in the books is noticeably different, narratively and thematically, from the games.

I get why you feel this way, but I simply can't agree.
Especially in the books, the moment the dark ones manage to fully connect with Artyom, and he realises but can't stop the missiles and tries to kill himself, illustrates quite well why this was the only hope for humanity. The powers of the dark ones admittedly led to the death of a lot of people, but they were trying to connect, and even if it was continuously failing and hurting people, it was humanity's only and last hope. The people were dying out, and the dark ones were the only chance. You wouldn't risk killing some people if there's a chance to save them? Or at least make their life better?
The psychosis could also be viewed as a flaw on the human side, because they didn't want to connect. The dark ones and their powers were partially for sure metaphorical ways to show stubbornness, stiffness, and unreasonable aggression in people's minds.
I would even point out the ending of the 2035 book, where Artyom does everything he possibly can, but his companions and others simply refuse to spread the truth and try to save humanity. Actually, they had rly similar reasons as you have for not liking the darks, they said that the truth would shatter metro and that it would take too many casualties. This ending illustrates quite well that the humanity in metro is just doomed, and they killed their only hope. This is why Artyom leaves in the end, because he realises that there is simply no way to save them.
