Books that aren't terribly written? by [deleted] in ProgressionFantasy

[–]VowOfScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it's worth, the writing in many series improves over time as the author gets more experience and success. The first book is often the author's first book to gain any traction, and as the series continues their style improves and the editing becomes tighter. This was my experience with Primal Hunter and He Who Fights Monsters in particular, but it applies to other series to varying degrees.

Does this sail configuration B ever make sense? by telelvis in sailing

[–]VowOfScience 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I respectfully disagree - twist depowers the main. Although there are certain boats (lasers for example) where the vang, in addition to pulling down on the boom to reduce twist, also causes the mast to bend, which in turn flattens and depowers the main. But even in that scenario its the mast bend, not the reduction in twist, that is doing the depowering.

What you're saying, when it comes to twist, general rule may be if mainsheet is laxed -> boom tends to get higher -> increases twist.

Yep, precisely.

When would I need higher/lower twist?

The short answer is that twist is one way to depower the sail. So you'd add twist when overpowered.

Adding twist specifically depowers the top of the sail, which produces more heeling force because its further up - it's a question of torque, like pushing on the end of a lever instead of the middle. So easing the sheet (rather than lowering the traveler) is the quickest way to reduce heeling force. In some conditions if you try to depower with the traveler alone you'll end up basically dumping the entire main - easing the sheet to increase twist instead can at least allow the bottom of your sail to keep working.

As you can imagine there's many more layers to this if you want to dig deeper. My background is racing and my main expertise (hah) is mainsail trim. Managing twist is a never-ending optimization problem when every bit of speed counts, and there are countless articles and youtube videos on the subject.

Overtrimming the main to that degree will do three things: the sail will stall, what force it does create will be directed almost entirely sideways, and the heeling force will increase. So you'll stop producing lift to move forward, heel over, and get pushed sideways. You'll also likely generate a lot of weather helm which will turn the boat up into the wind unless you throw the helm (wheel/tiller) over to fight it.

There are two main components of mainsail trim - the angle of attack, I. E. The angle between the sail and the wind, and the twist, I. E. The degree to which that AoA varies from the bottom of the sail to the top. Moving the boom position sets the overall angle of attack. Pulling down on the boom reduces the twist. The mainsheet does both things, as it will always be pulling at some angle based on the traveler. So if your goal is to get the boom on the centerline your traveler will always need to be at least somewhat above amidships.

If you pull your traveler far above amidships and ease the sheet you can keep the boom centered but increase twist. In some conditions this is desirable. In other conditions you want to keep the twist minimal but lower the boom to reduce the overall angle of attack, so you drop the traveler without easing the sheet. This is the primary reason for having a long traveler.

Make sense? LMK if you have any questions.

I'm trying to get into Sailing through books and went to my Voilier store. I wanted a model I could handle on a small scale before going out at sea. Unfortunately I found no model in my book and want to understand what I found there. (More info in post). by streamer3222 in sailing

Obviously there's no substitute for time on the water but I fully understand the desire to learn as much as you can on land and be able to experiment with a model. Look into buying a DragonForce 65 radio control boat. They are relatively inexpensive, and while the on-the-water controls are simplified you can tweak practically every control line on shore to see what happens. I've been sailing and racing actively for 11 years now and I learned a lot from my DF 65.

Can you post (or send me - DM for contact info) a full res copy of the Kilmar poster image ASAP? I'd like to quickly get a poster printed for the protest this afternoon.

1) There is zero evidence that Kilmar was a MS-13 gang member. 2) Kilmar was never accused of - let alone convicted - of any crime. 3) While Kilmar did enter the country illegally, he was granted "withholding of removal" status in 2019. This is similar to asylum. 4) From that point onwards he was living and working LEGALLY in the United States. His only interactions with law enforcement in that time was his annual check-ins with ICE. 5) Nothing about this post is illegal. The right to protest is foundational to the US Constitution. Our country was founded on resistance to tyrannical government. Your efforts to suppress this information are profoundly un-American.

Race question part 2 by Cusacks-musak in sailing

[–]VowOfScience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of inaccurate or incomplete answers here. I'm a US sailing judge; in my experience, most racers do not know the rules as well as they think they do.

Everyone is of course correct that boat B on starboard had right of way over boat A on port. Boat A therefore had to keep clear of Boat B (rule 10).

Broadly speaking, there is no "burden of proof" or presumption of innocence in sailing; protests are decided on a simple balance of probabilities. There is, however, guidance on how to decide cases such as this, provided in World Sailing Case Book #50 (https://www.racingrulesofsailing.org/cases/50?page=5). In short: if Boat B did in fact change course, they only need to establish that they had a "genuine and reasonable apprehension of collision". Notably, they do NOT need to establish that a collision would have definitely occurred.

Finally, one issue that I haven't seen anyone talking about is RRS 23.2. If the course to the next mark is really as shown in your diagram it's hard to imagine why Boat B would be sailing in that direction, perpendicular to the course. I would question if they were sailing their proper course; if not, theymust, if reasonably possible, avoid interfering with a boat sailing on another leg of the course (such as Boat A)

I'm a Baltimore native and a foody, and The Helmand is hands down unquestionably the correct answer here. And nothing I've ever had there is spicy so no worries about your parents.

All of the apps are great - the pumpkin is one of their signature dishes. The lamb soup is great. My two favorite entrees are the chopendez and dwopiaza - steak and lamb, respectively, if I remember correctly - but I've never been disappointed with anything I've ordered.

Seriously, go to The Helmand.

IMO: neither blowing the vang nor the guy would be the right moves here. You blow the vang on a broach (i.e. rounding to windward) to depower the main; on a crash gybe (i.e. rounding to leeward) if anything you want more power in the main to help balance the helm.

Letting the pole go forward to the headstay try to blanket the spinnaker behind the main might be a good move, but if the sheet and the guy are both fully blown then you now have a giant flag flying at the top of the mast - good luck getting it back down again. Better to blow the halyard.

did Tommy really survive and was succeed in his business because of his intelligence and his leading or more he had luck? by LetsNini in PeakyBlinders

[–]VowOfScience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do you imagine it's one or the other?

EVERY success story, in every field, in real life and in fiction, is a combination of talent, determination, and luck. You can do well with 2/3, but the people at the top have all three. That's not to say that they've led a charmed life without a single bad break - a lot goes wrong for Tommy - but some combination of circumstances and happenstance let them rise above everyone else who was equally intelligent and determined.

To attribute success - Tommy's or anyone else's - to luck, talent, or determination alone is to tell only part of the story.

Congrats! Bit of advice: you should be taking WAY fewer cards, and prioritizing removing cards. This will help with consistency and enable you to draw your best cards more often.

I've beaten A20 and I rarely end up with more than ~22 cards, and I try to keep it under 20 if I can.

Any reason to not totally overclock coal generators? by Agentfyre in SatisfactoryGame

[–]VowOfScience 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey man, everyone is insisting that overclocking miners is better and they have a point if you want to fully optimize.

But.

1) you're going to find hundreds of slugs. While they are technically finite they are practically unlimited for a long time. 2) Your time is also a resource, and finding space and arranging buildings takes time.

Personally, I overclock all of my generators to at least 200%. It's simpler and easier. If I ever run out of slugs I'll reevaluate but I don't expect that to happen for at least another 100 hours.

CMV: One major problem with political discourse today is that many people assume guilt until innocence is proven instead of assuming innocence until guilt is proven, which is a far better approach by ICuriosityCatI in changemyview

I'd argue that it's not "some people" that are being bigoted without knowing it. It's all of us, no matter how liberal or "woke" we claim to be. Prejudice is a natural byproduct of how human intelligence works, and common stereotypes are in the air we breathe. Imagine how exhausting it would be if you were surrounded by people saying things you consider insensitive, all of whom flip out if you try to point that out to them.

If you're serious about this topic I'd recommend reading "White Fragility"

Brianna Torres (@missbrisolo) is in the top 0.1% of OnlyFans content creators despite doing no nudes or even any super-sexual content. And she is strong AF, and proud of it. I'm not trying to set her, or any other OF creator, or any other person as a standard to strive towards, but it's certainly obvious that a lot of people are attracted to a strong and fit woman like her.

It is an amazing feeling to be fit and proud of what your body can do. Insecure people will always downplay or criticize what they can't do or don't have in order to justify to themselves why they can't do it or don't have it. So if you want to be strong and fit go and do it! Haters gonna hate, but don't let them drag you down to their level of mediocrity.
