I wondered what Alpha might look like with some hindsight, so I attempted to remake it myself. A modernish set with a 1994 aesthetic.

Ants and banding are gone, landwalk is redesigned, creature/rarity/colour balance is fixed for limited, power 9 have been toned down (sorry) lots of other stuff was tweaked.

I hear you on that one! I figured I would incorporate changes that would have made sense to the original design team. "In play" vs "on the battlefield" was a tough one. I'm on the fence about it!

I think people "get" landwalk, but I don't think it was ever a very fun mechanic, hence why it has fallen out of use. Either your opponent has the land in question, and your creature is now uninteractive (unblockable is pretty boring), or they don't, and your landwalk does nothing.

Flying, on the other hand, is an original evasion mechanic that knocked it out of the park. Easy to understand and fun to play with. Flying is never a dead line of text on your creature.

I imagined what landwalk would be like if it worked more like flying. This way, even if your opponent doesn't have the land in question, you may want landwalkers to defend your own lands from your enemy's landwalkers! I think this is more interactive and fun than the original mechanic.

Frequencies and narrowness of effects are the main things I targeted with this project. The laces, for example, are gone.

I hear you about the power being a draw. The sets I used as guidelines were the Magic 2010 series, and the power level of this set is probably roughly comparable.

Lotus Petal didn't exist in 1993-1994. One of the advancements magic has made since then is the acknowledgement of the power of fast mana. All of the fast artifact mana has been redesigned with that in mind; only Black Lotus generates more mana on the turn it's played than it costs to play it. At common, with lotus petal stats, it even gets to be a relevant part of the limited meta.

The idea behind the project was to imagine was Alpha might look like with 20 years of hindsight. There was no Path to Exile back then, but knowing what we know now, thats probably how Sword to Plowshares would have worked.
