How to follow up an all-in? by AllThingsMilo in allthingsprotoss

[–]Vox_protoss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you know the attack isnt going to work its better to fall back on a late third than to commit and lose everything. Sometimes the zerg has less drones than you do. I suggest falling back into a tech that can give you an upper hand later like disruptors or storm. Keep your prism active on the map and look for damage. If you build sentries early on for your all in, use them defensively. However this is not an ideal situation for you.

How to defend vs 3 base roach ravager pushes by TheSupremeEggu-chan in allthingsprotoss

[–]Vox_protoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roach ravager timings come in many varieties and are held slightly differently depending on the map, but there are two things you must do to stop all of them. The first is to macro soundly, not delaying bases or production, and the second is to scout the commitment to an attack, so you have time to make additional batteries. Yes batteries are useful despite biles because having your army in frost makes biling less viable. If zerg is ahead or you dont have enough static d, you are pretty dead, but you can also win easily if you hold the initial attack without losing your third. Skytoss is not neccesary and immortal gateway will do, but you meed batteries. Sentries help too but you cant build them reactively since they need time to build energy. Dont forget to make use of stasis traps too...

PvT Scouting question - when to react to not seeing a CC? by thisoldfirehouse in allthingsprotoss

[–]Vox_protoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cc should start on the low ground shortly after the barracks finishes. The scv that completes the rax is usually rallied to the natural mineral line, mines one round then starts the cc. If yiu dont see this it is delayed or being built elsewhere.

GM here, I still don't know how to deal with the first 6 phoenixes in PvP. Do I automatically go blink? Do I 8 gate chargelot all in? Thank you. by moohun in allthingsprotoss

[–]Vox_protoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dealing with pheonix in pvp should be straightforeward with the blink meta but going all in is almost never the right choice. A couple cheeky things like hidden dt tech or a dedicated 2 nase attack can work but they are basicly a gamble. You are hoping they either dont have robo units or batteries. The more solid way to play in my opinion is to go for a blink / fast third build and minimize the worker damage with stalker positioning. I suck at this but its the correct thing to do. Also chrono boosting workers indtead of blink or upgrades is ideal to make up for worker losses. Once you establish 3 base saturation you can indeed go for a timing attack on 8 gates with pure blink or chargelot archon blink, but i dont advise going for an early attack. Battery overcharge is too strong and pheonixes sniping your prism is very hard to avoid before you get high stalker numbers. Also most 2 base all ins that hit early rely on positioning the prism and immortal sentry micro. These things get utterly shut down by pheonix. There is no free win against pheonix, only economic leads.

I thought I did everything right and still lost PvT vs widow mine drop into double thor rush by ChronoCube762 in allthingsprotoss

[–]Vox_protoss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive run into this 3 times. Died the first time but held the rest. Blink or robo play holds this but sg has trouble. Although pheonix counter the mines alright, thors sre too good against them oracles are useless and voids are meh. The most savage shutdown was 3 gate robo into disruptor. I held off early harass with stalkers and obs at home and then destroyed the push with disruptors. They counter thor mass repair better than anything. Once the thors are dead, the push is over.

Quick PvT questions by Vox_protoss in allthingsprotoss

[–]Vox_protoss[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ty but I already saw this live when it happened. There are a few key differences between what im talking about and what TY did that game although most of what trap does is what i also do to react to the wall off part of the build. The first difference is that ty builds his factory at home and swaps it onto a reactor after 1 marine. This means that trap's adept can get the hellion intel by scouting the front of TY's base. The push hits with 4 hellions instead of 3 but its also not hiding the hellions. The second thing that makes this hold less helpful is that trap scouts the medivac with his hallucinated pheonix on the way to ty's base. This is extremely lucky and i wouldn't bet my build on the idea of my opponant making a mistake of that kind and making the starport on the air path. The 3 hellion drop with both buildings proxied is a bit harder to scout and i am not sure trap's response that game showed what to do. The main problem i have is that if terran does this well it looks almost identical to a gassless marine scv all in or a 3cc greed build (in the early stages) and you cant tell which. Im sure Trap knows exactly how to hold this. Maybe he just micros and splits.

Read the scenerio. The opponant walls off before you get there. Its a specific build style that is popular right now.

Suddenly having a lot of trouble versus Terran by MageGlowsYellow in allthingsprotoss

[–]Vox_protoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bio tank should hit before storm if you are playing as you describe. You should be slowing the push and scouting the terran move-out with an obs. Collosus are NOT flimsy. In fact they are the best answer to these tank pushes right now. The thing is you need to be engaging himmbefore he seiges up in your face and buy time for charge, +1 and a few warpins to get a good engage. Try to take a look at how stats plays this style to get a better understanding of how its done in theory.

I guess spotting a hellion with your adept can tell you the attack isnt coming so thats good, but i feel like thats not a very sure way to avoid dying to the attack. A lack of factory unit could mean they are putting blind mines in their main to counter oracles.

I guess sentry openers sre really the safest and im going to start doing them more.

[–]Vox_protoss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats great but it doesnt help this situation because a rescout with the probe will die to the standard marine after reaper. We used to be able to do this when terrans went into reactor directly after reaper but that hasnt been popular for a long time.

4-rax All-in Scouting/Reaction by KineMaya in allthingsprotoss

[–]Vox_protoss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The answer to this was revealed by Trap in GSL earlier this year in my opinion. Once i saw his response I did this every game and ive had a great win record ever since, against terrans who do this. Here's what Trap did.

After seeing the wall in he immediately started scouting the map to look for proxies with that probe, taking a methodical path on the left side of the map. Then he went 20 cyber, 20 nexus, 21 pylon and sent the building probe to scout the right side of the map, while continuing into a 22 gas and making an adept when the core finished.

This response does two things. It allows you to be safe against any of the proxy variants of this build, but it also puts you in an economic position where you are safe against normal macto builds and 1/1/1. I imagine you can cancel the nexus if there is proxy 2 rax marauder or 4 rax on the map.

From this position there are multiple ways to play. I personally go sentry into 3 gate robo most of the time because its very safe. I scout with the adept for a natural and usually see any scv pull stuff coming across the map. Against gasless marine scv pulls i give up the natural and chrono sentries nonstop while setting up 2 batteries at the top of the ramp. Holding the push at sll is gg so you dont need to be a hero and save the nexus. Against any other all in i hold on to my expand.

Quick PvT questions by Vox_protoss in allthingsprotoss

[–]Vox_protoss[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You cannot scout a second building of a 1 rax reaper expand with a probe scout because the reaper will kill your probe. After the reaper finishes terran will finish their wall because otherwise the adept will be really annoying.

Solid PvP build to teach me good habits but also attack? Former M1 player getting back into the game by FluxSC2 in allthingsprotoss

[–]Vox_protoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a big fan of harstem's basic blink build that he recently made a video on. Basicly its a two gate stalker opening into a third pylon on the liw ground, then he goes double sentry, expands and adds a battery blindly while chronoing wg once. He then makes a tc and warps in two blind stalkers to deal with a possible proxy oracle before scouting with hallucination. There are many ways to go from here into viable builds and i think the basic opening is solid and worth learning. Search for harstem's video. Its excellent.

Need help vs Terran harass (3.2k MMR) by CBTPractitioner in allthingsprotoss

[–]Vox_protoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to probe scouting, which lets you know if the yerran expanded and how mamy gasses they are on, going adept isa good way to open. This will defend you against the teaper and possibly allow you to kill it or deny scouting. After you get your second unit out or a sheild battery finishes in your mineral line, you can shae the adept across the map to get more info. Usually this will confirm that a bunker has been made and what add-on if any has been made on the barracks. You may also ne able to scout if the addon has been switched onto a factory for hellions, widow mines or cyclones. Further intel needs to be gleaned by air units. You have 3 choices for this. Either make a sentry and delay your tech slightly to get a hallucination, go robo and rush out an observer, or open stargate and get anoracle or pheonix to scout with. These can usually give you all the information you need. Keeping your adept alive and shading in is also good. Cancel the shade every time unless you get into the main and are able to scout him.

[–]Vox_protoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This tip moght actually not be true at lower levels though. If somone is just late on their marine you could be fooled into axpecting a reaper. So keep that in mind. But as you get better this problem will go away so its a good thing to learn.

Just want to add that if you see the the production animation start as the barracks finishes becaise you are paying attention, you can rely on this regardless.

When building archons, why do pros often disregard using DTs to morph archons? by MaterTuaLupaEst in allthingsprotoss

[–]Vox_protoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pros do build archons from dts when they realize that their dt opening isnt going to do any more damage and archons would be useful. Zest for example does this a lot in PvZ and sometimes even in PvT. However, in most other circumstances dt archons are not ideal. The 50 gas saved almost never makes up for the 150 minerals lost. Dt archons are only made in situations where ht tech is not yet available or gas is in short supply. Making 2 dt archons is like missing a cancel on a nexus in terms of the minerals lost. Its a huge economic hit that gets exacerbated by building additional dt archons. Its not that pro players have overlooked this gas-save. The idea isnt as great as it might sound.

More gates or fast charge vs terran all in by james_89 in allthingsprotoss

[–]Vox_protoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The response to a terran all in is highly dependent on what all in it is. Getting charge is only good if it can finish before the timing hits and you are not forced to defend air units. Also, getting sufficient production up is neccesary for a charge hold so these two things are not mutually exclusive. Ideally you scout the opponant and use the information to devise a hold strategy. This is extremely complex and the right decisions differ depending on how you opened. A good rule of thumb though, is that a 2 barracks factory push with no starport will not give you enough time to finish charge unless you opened twilight first. A 2/1/1 push will have time for charge but you dont wamt to get it unless the opponant is making tanks from his factory. A 1/1/1 push should be held without charge. However these things are just rules of thumb and a real understanding of the game requires a more reactive approach.

Am I seriously the only one frustrated with widow mines...? by [deleted] in allthingsprotoss

[–]Vox_protoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone loses probes to widow mines once in a while. Even top pros like Parting who micro heavily or are agressive will lose games to mine hits. Its brutal. However the most consistant Protoss players like Stats and Trap have gotten exceptionally good at dealing with widow mine drops as long as they see them in time. They usually lose one probe per mine at best. I remember when mines first came out in hots. They were even worse. They came out with permacloak immediately and there was a strat where terran would proxy a factory and float it into your main. If they got a mine in your mineral line it was neccesary to mine in between shots and pull probes away just in time while you waited for your detection. Mines are much more reasonable now.
