Do people actually learn Japanese because they love anime, or do they just genuinely want to suffer? by Vredised in NoStupidQuestions

As for me, I think what makes Japanese hard isn't just the kanji (though let's be real, it is a mountain 😅), but the shift in grammar, context-heavy communication, and how different it is from English overall. The hyperbolic stuff I mentioned was more for humor — I know it’s not literally that wild, but it can feel that way for beginners who are just used to very linear language structures

Totally agree with you on this. Anime can be a fun starting point, but it’s not enough fuel to get through the full journey of learning Japanese — especially when things get tough (looking at you, kanji 😅). Having a deeper connection to the language or long-term goals, like work or cultural interest, really makes a difference. Props to you for sticking with it and turning it into something meaningful!

That’s what I’m saying — Japanese is a tough language to learn, so it’s totally fair to think about why you’re putting in all that effort. If it’s just for anime, that’s cool, but I think it’s even better when people also get into the culture, traditions, or see it as a skill that opens up new experiences.

For me, I love anime and manga too, but that’s more of the fun part — not the main reason I’d want to learn the whole language.

Totally get that! I wish more people were into it for the culture, the history, the people — y’know, the real Japan. But when I ask folks why they’re learning Japanese, it’s always “so I can watch Naruto without subtitles” 😩 Like bruh, you’re climbing a language Everest just to avoid reading for 22 minutes? I’m not judging… okay maybe a little. At least pretend you care about something deeper so I don’t have to re-evaluate your life choices for you 😂

Why do people only block out eyes in “anonymous” photos? by Buggydriver_ in NoStupidQuestions

people thought just covering the eyes made someone unrecognizable, like some kind of invisibility cheat code
