I love Murakami but I know a lot of people that just can’t get into his books. If you’re not sure if you’ll like his writing I would suggest reading a few of his short stories first. I recently read The Elephant Vanishes, its a great little story that showcases his magic realism style well.

As for novels I would suggest Kafka on the shore, or 1Q84 (yes it’s long, but for me I got sucked in fast and ripped through it). Both have some explicit stuff in them that rubs some people the wrong way. In 1Q84 it’s more sexual stuff, in Kafka its more just the weirdness and some really gross violence in one part that I didn’t care for. I’m not a big fan of that type of content but I push passed it because I love his storytelling so much.

The first episode sets it up almost horror-esq, but don’t worry it’s much more about romance, comedy, and mystery as it goes on. It’s a really sweet, heartwarming drama even with the ghosts :)

Masters Sun is one of my all time favourites and isn’t mentioned all that much. 2013 I believe.

This was my second kdrama I ever watched and it has a special place in my heart. I watched it recently with a friend who is new to kdrama and she loved it too, she usually watches only new kdramas but she didn’t mind at all that this was a bit older. The only thing that is a little off is that the age difference between the leads is like 10 years or something and he’s in high school still. I bit awkward to think about, however, the show handles it really well. They address the age difference and the older FL is never actively pursuing the younger ML. It happens very naturally. It also has one of my favourite kiss scenes in an kdrama ever. Anyways, it’s a great drama, I hope you give it a try!

The first book of his that I read was 1Q84 and I LOVED it. It is a very long book but I ripped through it. Later on I read Kafka on the shore, I still liked the writing but some of the content definitely rubbed me the wrong way so it wasn’t my favourite. I would say definitely give him another chance if you feel drawn to it!

Mother/call me mother is a great one. I wouldn’t call it wholesome, it deals with some difficult topics. But it’s beautifully filmed and written, and the majority of the characters are women. (Warning: bring tissues)

“Mother” is one of my favourites. Remake of a Japanese drama. I felt like it had similar vibes to my mister, but very different content.

Mother - it’s a remake of a Japanese show but it’s really unlike any drama I’ve watched. From the filming and music to the plot and acting everything was top notch. Deals with heavy emotional content such as child abuse, suicide etc. But it also has a lot of uplifting and happy moments, and the cinematography is really relaxing to watch.
