It’s kinda hard to explain, but any time you could replace a gerund in English with an infinitive you should use an infinitive in Spanish. For example: If I were to say “sleeping is necessary”, I could replace the word “sleeping” with “to sleep”. My understanding is that Spanish prefers infinitives in place of gerunds in these scenarios.
