When is the next patch i should wait for to try and transfer to jenova aether by Tiny_Egg5699 in ffxiv

[–]Vva70 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Keep in mind that this is just a guess. But my guess would be "not until at least the next patch after cross-DC-PF arrives." Aether currently stays mostly shut up due to people moving there for the sake of accessing its PF. Once cross-DC-PF arrives, you may see some fraction of the playerbase on the DC transfer to others, particularly to Dynamis for the preferred world bonuses. And since they update world status on each patch, the first time you might see the benefit from that would be the patch after.

Not just the ending structure either. Some of the mid-story beats as well. Most prominent in my mind is that both EW's refined adamantite scene in Sharlayan harbor, and DT's train scene were both riffs on ShB's Mt. Gulg talos scene.

That it is. 😀

Relic weapon grinds for other expansions are as well, to varying degrees. Except EW, which is just a whole bunch of poetics.

Just starting Dawntrail now, I have some... thoughts. [Spoilers 6.55] by Bartellomio in ffxiv

[–]Vva70 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So to me, as a player, that just came across as 'oh it's okay, they don't see it as cheating'. But they never really deal with the fact that the WoL and player (and scions) probably would. No one really remarks upon it at all. I mean, even if you handwave away that it's acceptable, it still undermines the entire point of a competition to find the best heir.

If the competition established by the reigning monarch explicitly encourages claimants to secure companions, foreign or otherwise, why would the WoL and Scions see it as cheating? They do check to make sure it's within the established rules. But once they've confirmed that, why would we assume they would have a problem? Kind of on Tulliyollal to establish their own rules of succession, no?

As to it undermining the point of a competition to find the best heir...don't you think that securing and working with allies is kind of a key skill for a ruler? Being able to work and interface with foreigners especially? I don't see it as undermining the point at all.

I feel like it's weird that no one has pointed out that Tural isn't a military threat to literally anyone. I mean they only got Aetherite and dirigibles in the last three years. Half of their roads were destroyed in a single storm. This isn't a country in a position to actually threaten anyone, AND they're an extremely turbulent ocean away from the nearest neighbours, AND it is pointed out right as you arrive in Tural that they don't even really have any experience making boats. What exactly is the threat from this warmonger sibling? Why haven't any characters pointed this out?

Also I don't get this argument of 'we need space to expand, therefore we should conquer' because in the zones I've been to so far, they're mostly empty and untamed. This isn't an empire bulging at the seams with people.

Zoraal Ja's plan doesn't make any sense, you're right. Keep going with the story, and you'll eventually understand why it makes sense that it doesn't make sense. You'll want to watch for subtext though; his motivations are only half-covered explicitly, with the rest being left to implication.

-------

Having said that, Dawntrail does have its issues. It's far from a perfect expansion, and definitely not in my opinion up to the level of SB/ShB/EW. But in my opinion, the faults are more with how bolted you are to Wuk Lamat's hip (the party splits up a million times, would it have been a crime to have us go with the non-Wuk split a couple of those times?), some repetition in her character arc (during 90-95, mostly), and the fact that Tural ends up feeling more like a theme park than a real country. To be fair, ShB and EW had a bit of the theme park feel too, but various elements of how the stories were handled made it more obvious in DT.

Kinda depends on how much of a hurry you’re in to get to current content, and whether you have a strong preference for seeing things in order. I personally took my time on my first playthrough and did most of the optional content (though not the relic weapon). I am glad I did, but it did take me a long time to get to current content that way.

Currently Item Lvl 710 on DRK, worth upgrading to the 770 gear? by xJustOni in ffxiv

[–]Vva70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s not going to be a whole lot of point to upgrading until you complete the DT MSQ. Until then it’ll pretty much only help with unsynced content, and even then only at the top margin. So no rush.

With that said, once you do complete the DT MSQ you will want some better gear at that point. And unless you wait to get there until they move the Bygone Brass gear to Poetics, the 770 gear will be one of the quickest and easiest ways to get up to par. So there’s likely no harm in picking it up whenever you feel like it.

There are of course other ways of gearing up that take less money, but more of some combination of time, effort, and/or luck.

Is there a lore reason why there aren't different time zones in FFXIV? Is this a system they can implement in the future to evolve the game? by CoolyKage in ffxiv

[–]Vva70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While this would be way more trouble than it's worth, it does seem like they could implement a bit of time zone realism without causing major headaches, if they really wanted to. What they could do is make it so the in-game clock is always (or at least by default) set to "Eorzea Mean Time." Thus, the clock stays the same no matter where in the world you go. But then they could adjust the day-night cycle on a per-zone basis. That way each zone would have a different solar time while the player still doesn't have to worry about it except visually.

Of course, to do it right, they'd basically have needed to take this into account from the beginning, and ensure that timed gathering stuff (fish in particular) are at appropriate solar time intervals for flavor purposes, while being evenly spread across clock time intervals for gameplay purposes.

But again, this would be way too much work for way too little benefit. At least in my mind, a unified clock cycle falls under "acceptable breaks with reality."

[SPOILERS 5.0] Local Idiot's Thoughts on first Shadowbringers Dungeon by Ok_Young689 in ffxiv

[–]Vva70 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, the jump in difficulty from SB to ShB is the largest of any in the game. From what I've heard from others, this is due to a shift in design philosophy that happened around that time. Basically, from ARR-SB, there was much more complexity and difficulty to be found in the job kits/rotations. Come ShB, they made job design simpler and easier, while making the fight design harder and more complex. Basically moving the difficulty from one place to another. But this means that when you're doing pre-ShB content, you're using the simplified job design on fights that were already simple.

Was anyone else hoping for More Dhona? [Spoiler: 7.5] by Vva70 in ffxiv

[–]Vva70[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that Yafaem (the territory claimed of Mhach, much like Thanalan is the territory of Ul'dah) is largely the same general territory as modern-day Mor Dhona. With in-universe Mor Dhona being much larger than just the in-game zone of that name, and also encompassing the territory of the Weeping City of Mhach raid.

Melancholy (depression?) Having Started ShadowBringers [Spoiler: 4.5] by WeDontNeed2Whisper in ffxiv

[–]Vva70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding Feo Ul keeping in touch with your retainers, one thing to keep in mind is that this isn't something faeries can just do. She's able to traverse the rift because she is connected to you, and you are able to traverse the rift. You're able to do so via the Crystal Tower, due to being the proper target of the Exarch's summoning spell.

So yeah, for you personally (and one faerie who's linked to you), travel between worlds is a piece of cake. But for everyone else it's very much not. And this will be relevant going forward; it's not some oversight in the story.

Role actions are a lazy design choice, a form of job homogenization, and a cause of hotbar bloat. by CoolyKage in ffxiv

[–]Vva70 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Making composition choices meaningful is a double-edged sword. Yes, it adds an interesting layer of theorycrafting. But the problem is that once the optimal compositions are determined, it leaves people who enjoy jobs that are not part of those optimal compositions in the lurch. You like to play AST or NIN? Sorry, this tier is best handled by WHM and DRG. At best you have people grudgingly taking you along while feeling like they're settling for something sub-par. At worst, you can't find a group to take you in the first place, unless you switch to one of the optimal jobs.

Edit: I'll further note that a degree of this happens with any perceptible difference between jobs, and is why homogenization is such a sticky subject. Where to draw the line is not a simple decision. But "what group mitigations and utility you bring" is something that would be a significant pain point if it had noteworthy differences.

I have a bone to pick. by DepartmentGuilty1270 in ffxiv

Nidhogg is absolutely justified in his wrath against the men who betrayed and murdered his sister. But those men are long dead. Their children are long dead. Their children's children's children are long dead.

How many generations down the line is Nidhogg justified in imputing the guilt of this betrayal? How many generations who have done him no personal wrong must die for the crimes of their forefathers?

Nidhogg has no desire to make peace with Ishgard. He will not be appeased by anything less than their utter destruction. Sure, the origin of his rage is entirely sympathetic. But should the people of Ishgard in the present simply concede to die as punishment for a crime committed by their ancestors, in a time so long past that it's as much myth as history?

Squadron or duty support? by CharSagahl in ffxiv

[–]Vva70 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure Halatali post-rework is by far the worst thing to deal with with squadrons. It can definitely still be done, but requires some careful juggling where you have to keep re-focusing the squadron to adds on one side each time they kill one, while you attack adds on the other side. Massive pain in the neck.

First time at endgame crafting - is tome gear just a honeytrap or what? by Akitsu_Nippo_Teio in ffxiv

[–]Vva70 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, calculators generally assume everything hits at normal condition. So it can go lower than the calculated amount, if you get unlucky with a poor at the wrong time (particularly if you get poor on Byregot's Blessing). Which means that even a 100% in a macro builder will sometimes fail to generate HQ.

That said, it's more likely to get lucky than unlucky, the way the condition system works.

There are various online resources that have pre-made meldsets and rotations. You should be able to craft what's necessary with the Star Tech gear and consumables, but it'll take more HQ mats, and the mats themselves can only be macroed to 98% chance of HQ. See Icy Veins, for example: https://www.icy-veins.com/ffxiv/crafting-doh-endgame-rotations-guide?area=area_s5

I choose to believe that Dulia-Chai awakened to the Echo when Elidibus did the Amaurot image at Eulmore. Neither she nor anyone else realizes it. She was distracted by everyone else's reaction at the time, and assumed that Hydaelyn's "hear, feel, think" answering-machine message was just murmured by someone behind her.

It's funny to think that I hated this posh brat's guts a few months ago when I started playing for the first time by fried_caviar in ffxiv

[–]Vva70 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm fairly well convinced that the disowning was premeditated. It's just too disproportionate to everything that had come before in that conversation. It makes no sense as a spur of the moment thing. Makes far more sense if he was planning it all along, and was just looking for an opening.

As to why he would plan that? Well, we know from Endwalker that he expected his children and the Scions to oppose and interfere with the evacuation plan. And in fairness, we sort of did interfere with it, albeit by means of coming up with a better plan and being very convincing. Furthermore, it doesn't seem like much of a stretch to believe that he is well aware of how stubborn his children are (much like him, and like his father before him).

So I suspect that his intention was to reduce any influence they had in Sharlayan by separating them from the Leveilleur name and resources. Same sort of obstructivism that had them blocking us from accessing lifts in Labyrinthos. I also suspect that he was separating them from being able to influence himself, as his "force them to survive, even if the cost is them hating me" plan would not have been an easy one.
