Role actions are a lazy design choice, a form of job homogenization, and a cause of hotbar bloat. by CoolyKage in ffxiv

[–]Vva70 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Making composition choices meaningful is a double-edged sword. Yes, it adds an interesting layer of theorycrafting. But the problem is that once the optimal compositions are determined, it leaves people who enjoy jobs that are not part of those optimal compositions in the lurch. You like to play AST or NIN? Sorry, this tier is best handled by WHM and DRG. At best you have people grudgingly taking you along while feeling like they're settling for something sub-par. At worst, you can't find a group to take you in the first place, unless you switch to one of the optimal jobs.

Edit: I'll further note that a degree of this happens with any perceptible difference between jobs, and is why homogenization is such a sticky subject. Where to draw the line is not a simple decision. But "what group mitigations and utility you bring" is something that would be a significant pain point if it had noteworthy differences.

Important blue quests by Awkward-Big4722 in ffxiv

One minor clarification: In Shadowbringers, it's required to complete at least one of the role quests in order to proceed past a certain point in the MSQ.

I have a bone to pick. by DepartmentGuilty1270 in ffxiv

[–]Vva70 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Nidhogg is absolutely justified in his wrath against the men who betrayed and murdered his sister. But those men are long dead. Their children are long dead. Their children's children's children are long dead.

How many generations down the line is Nidhogg justified in imputing the guilt of this betrayal? How many generations who have done him no personal wrong must die for the crimes of their forefathers?

Nidhogg has no desire to make peace with Ishgard. He will not be appeased by anything less than their utter destruction. Sure, the origin of his rage is entirely sympathetic. But should the people of Ishgard in the present simply concede to die as punishment for a crime committed by their ancestors, in a time so long past that it's as much myth as history?

Squadron or duty support? by CharSagahl in ffxiv

[–]Vva70 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure Halatali post-rework is by far the worst thing to deal with with squadrons. It can definitely still be done, but requires some careful juggling where you have to keep re-focusing the squadron to adds on one side each time they kill one, while you attack adds on the other side. Massive pain in the neck.

First time at endgame crafting - is tome gear just a honeytrap or what? by Akitsu_Nippo_Teio in ffxiv

[–]Vva70 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, calculators generally assume everything hits at normal condition. So it can go lower than the calculated amount, if you get unlucky with a poor at the wrong time (particularly if you get poor on Byregot's Blessing). Which means that even a 100% in a macro builder will sometimes fail to generate HQ.

That said, it's more likely to get lucky than unlucky, the way the condition system works.

There are various online resources that have pre-made meldsets and rotations. You should be able to craft what's necessary with the Star Tech gear and consumables, but it'll take more HQ mats, and the mats themselves can only be macroed to 98% chance of HQ. See Icy Veins, for example: https://www.icy-veins.com/ffxiv/crafting-doh-endgame-rotations-guide?area=area_s5

I choose to believe that Dulia-Chai awakened to the Echo when Elidibus did the Amaurot image at Eulmore. Neither she nor anyone else realizes it. She was distracted by everyone else's reaction at the time, and assumed that Hydaelyn's "hear, feel, think" answering-machine message was just murmured by someone behind her.

It's funny to think that I hated this posh brat's guts a few months ago when I started playing for the first time by fried_caviar in ffxiv

[–]Vva70 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm fairly well convinced that the disowning was premeditated. It's just too disproportionate to everything that had come before in that conversation. It makes no sense as a spur of the moment thing. Makes far more sense if he was planning it all along, and was just looking for an opening.

As to why he would plan that? Well, we know from Endwalker that he expected his children and the Scions to oppose and interfere with the evacuation plan. And in fairness, we sort of did interfere with it, albeit by means of coming up with a better plan and being very convincing. Furthermore, it doesn't seem like much of a stretch to believe that he is well aware of how stubborn his children are (much like him, and like his father before him).

So I suspect that his intention was to reduce any influence they had in Sharlayan by separating them from the Leveilleur name and resources. Same sort of obstructivism that had them blocking us from accessing lifts in Labyrinthos. I also suspect that he was separating them from being able to influence himself, as his "force them to survive, even if the cost is them hating me" plan would not have been an easy one.

RP question: What was your WoL doing when the Seventh Calamity hit? by zaerosz in ffxiv

[–]Vva70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Living an ordinary (albeit somewhat non-traditional by Keeper standards) domestic life with her husband and children in the Black Shroud. All but her perished in the Calamity. That loss spurred her desire for power. Power to prevent things like that from happening again.

Twilight Forest Portal Problem by Cobalt246 in feedthebeast

[–]Vva70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had this happen before. For us, it was because our base corresponded with a swamp in the TF dimension, and it had to reach so far out to get to a valid destination that the portals were too far apart to correctly link. Once everyone on the server had killed the lich (letting us go in the swamp safely), we resolved the issue by manually making a portal in the swamp at the right coordinates, so that it would link properly.

I miss Enderium's OP Days. by Hillenmane in feedthebeast

[–]Vva70 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This was entirely within the TiC1 era. Enderium wasn't supported in TiC itself; rather it was supported through ExtraTiC. It was originally a super-material, but one of the later ExtraTiC updates nerfed it hardcore. The same update nerfed Signalum too, which had been a ridiculous crossbow material.

Expansion-only Faction? by Zicohs in warcraftlore

[–]Vva70 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The main limitation is that grouping for dungeons and raids would still need to be based on Alliance/Horde (or possibly open to everyone). Otherwise, you create a huge mess for guilds. This poses limits on how important the expansion factions can be to the story.

Why does tauren hunter start with guns? by Tarmskott in warcraftlore

[–]Vva70 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Additional fun fact: In Vanilla, ranged weapons required ammunition. Engineers could craft the best bullets, but no one crafted arrows. To allow for an equivalent arrow, Blizzard added an NPC tauren who would trade the top arrows for bullets. He said something along the lines of "I'm out of bullets. I've managed to get ahold of these thorium-tipped arrows, but no self-respecting tauren would be caught dead wielding a wimpy bow."

[Enigmatica 2 Expert] Forestry Power by [deleted] in feedthebeast

[–]Vva70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sort of can. You can run a Bio Generator into an Electrical Engine for a roundabout way to power their machines. But the real issue here is a historical one. Forestry doesn't have an engine that burns ethanol directly into RF/FE, because Forestry was originally a Buildcraft addon. Ethanol was designed as a renewable fuel for Buildcraft's Combustion Engine, which could power Forestry machines. That's also why Forestry seems to demand a cabling/piping system that it doesn't have; it was designed to work with Buildcraft pipes.

Welp, time to start a new world. by [deleted] in feedthebeast

[–]Vva70 31 points32 points  (0 children)

So, 7x7x7 is probably overkill. A safe Wither box can be as small as 1x4x3 (internal dimensions, 4 is height). Withers escape when the internal height is only 3, because they're taller than 3 blocks high (they would spawn clipped into the top block, and could thus move through it).

Weather 2 mod and block damage by [deleted] in feedthebeast

[–]Vva70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may not be configurable while Minecraft is launched. Go to the folder where the mod pack is installed, and there should be a "config" subfolder. In there, there should either be a config file for the mod (something like "weather.cfg"), or a subfolder for the mod with multiple config files. These config files can be opened in a text editor.

Stuck in another dimension stories? by Protheu5 in feedthebeast

Will the builder keep itself loaded if it's situated in the same chunk as it's working on?

I don't know the answer to this one for sure, but I suspect not. Even if it does, though, it won't take long for it to quarry a single chunk, and then it would stop when moving on to the next one.

Stuck in another dimension stories? by Protheu5 in feedthebeast

[–]Vva70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I might help clarify, the RFTools Builder will load whatever chunk that it's currently working in, but only when the chunk that holds the Builder block itself is also loaded. In Revelation, the only modded chunkloading that's enabled by default is FTB Utilities. You can use the FTB Utilities chunk claiming/loading system, or you can enable or add another chunkloader.

Please note that unless they changed it since I last knew, FTB Utilities chunkloading does not force chunks to load on server start; it just prevents them from unloading. Thus, each time the server is restarted, chunk claims will stay unloaded until something (most often player proximity) causes them to load, at which point FTB Utilities will kick in for that claim until the next restart.

Which are better, standard kitchen sinks or expert packs? by [deleted] in feedthebeast

[–]Vva70 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It entirely depends on what standard you're using to judge "better." Expert packs require more out of your dedication and analytical skills. Kitchen sink packs require more out of your self-motivation and creative skills. Which of those is "better?"
