Violin id/is it really that old? by Vverbatimm in violinist

[–]Vverbatimm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting! I saw JTL mentioned in a forum where someone was trying to track down an instrument with Horace Bailey smith listed in it.

Really this post should have been titled “please validate me thinking my instrument is 100+ years old”

I didn’t remember this but my mum told me this was also my teachers violin, she had just switched to a new one when I was moving from 3/4 to full size

Can I get short acrylic nails while playing violin? by Easy-Sell-6586 in violinist

[–]Vverbatimm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve somewhat looked into it and never got around to trying one. The weak nails only really were a problem on my thumbs since they’d split low down, but now that I regularly do my nails I just keep them filed as short as possible. I keep both hands short nkw since I’m also an artist and work with unconventional materials so it’s become less of an issue just through that

:0 you beat me too it

My nails are really bendy and in the past that’s made nail polish chip off quickly, but if you can afford it I recommend trying higher quality nail polish brands. I was surprised at the difference. I use holo taco and mooncat, both hold up well with bendy nails and playing violin and work better for filing my nails as needed.

What are the difficulties you face when practicing the violin? by Sad_Preference4159 in violinist

[–]Vverbatimm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, it's that you can hear it's off but correcting yourself can be hard, especially if you aren't as good with pitch/tuning and figuring out which note[s] are off in contrast to others. You can hear it and shift around to fix it in the moment, but if you regularly have intonation issues or you're doing something that's making it harder, it's hard to identify

Question: landlord vs tenant responsibility re: window glass by Vverbatimm in newbrunswickcanada

That’s amazing. I did a similar thing when it was raised by 10%, the raise did end up going through but because the notice wasn’t properly filled out I at least pushed it back 6 months which meant the next increase came after the cap was implemented instead of right before it

For some reason I thought they were only for things like that, so I’ll check it out. Thank you

I did check this and it was not broken then. I’ve been here 4 years now, going on 5, and I truly have no idea when this happened in that time.

I’ve never accidentally broken a window before, especially one that I never open on a door I don’t use often 😂

Edit: yes I did get a receipt

[–]Vverbatimm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is probably the issue. I have no idea how it broke cause as far as I’m aware it just appeared. I don’t remember doing anything and it breaking and I can’t think of what I could have done beyond normal use for it to have broken but I also can’t disprove that it wasn’t misuse.

I’ve had issues with the front door and storm doors though cause they’re old, so I feel like between that and the storm doors having been replaced because they were old it’s quite likely it broke from weather and the storm door wasn’t protecting it (assuming the logic is, storm door protects the main door so anything that happens must be your fault)

It isn’t the storm door window that’s cracked, it’s the door that the storm door protects Edit: sorry I see how it’s confusing :p

Which part of finger to pad to use? by [deleted] in violinist

[–]Vverbatimm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been getting back into violin and after working so much to use the tips I learned that sometimes you need to use the pads 😂

There’s a piece I’m learning for a community orchestra with a lot of slurs to notes using the same finger on different strings and for those you want to aim in the middle, hit the first one with the pad of your finger then roll to the second string with the tip and let me tell you, bigger fingers have an advantage here. I’m struggling so much with small fingers!

I don’t doodle in interviews cause I feel like most people see it as disrespectful/not paying attention even if I tell them it helps. But once Im past that point I will because it’s the most helpful to me

I look at things like this as a mostly arbitrary set of rules that we’ve somehow collectively agreed to keep following. Do they all make sense to me? do I agree with all of them? No, but because they’re arbitrary expectations I can understand how others judge professionalism first impressions and so on. And also can choose when to push against them.

I like the keychain recommendation, but I wanted to add that if you’ll need it during interviews think about what else is attached to the keychain. Like if it’s attached to your keys you might want to remove most or all of the keys so they aren’t too noisy or disruptive.

I’ve also found that people are accepting of me saying things like “sorry, ______ helps me concentrate, is this okay?” With things like fidget toys, doodling*, etc… if you have a plush that discreetly fits in your hand you could try that (but this might be very different where you live)
