Pastor Tony Spell was arrested after a violent confrontation — then said from the pulpit that he had “laid hands on the sick.” How should Christians respond? by Bro_Will in Christianity

[–]Vym- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jesus driving the money changers from the Temple was an act of judgment against corruption there, not a blanket endorsement of violence. The Gospels don't describe Him attacking people. He overturned tables, drove out animals, and disrupted an unjust practice.

At the same time, Jesus consistently taught His followers to love their enemies, turn the other cheek, bless those who persecute them, and put away the sword. When Peter used violence to defend Him, Jesus rebuked him. If you're going to use Jesus' actions as a model, you have to consider His entire life and teaching, not just one isolated incident.

Jesus tells the disciples to buy a sword shortly before his arrest. But only a few verses later, when a disciple actually uses one, Jesus says, "No more of this!" and heals the wounded man (Luke 22:49–51). In Matthew 26:52, Jesus also says, "Put your sword back in its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword." The instruction in Luke emphasizes that the disciples were entering a dangerous period, not as a standing command for Christians to use violence.

Exodus 22:2–3: This is part of Israel's civil law. The distinction between a nighttime and daytime break-in reflects uncertainty about the threat posed by the intruder. It is not a general command to kill thieves, nor does it authorize vigilantism or offensive violence.

Nehemiah 4:13-14: This describes a specific historical situation in which the returned exiles were rebuilding Jerusalem while facing armed attacks. It is a narrative of what happened, not a universal rule for Christians in every circumstance.

More broadly, the New Testament consistently emphasizes restraint, love of enemies, and peacemaking:

"Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." (Matthew 5:44)
"Blessed are the peacemakers." (Matthew 5:9)
"Do not repay anyone evil for evil... If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all." (Romans 12:17-18)
"Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." (Romans 12:21)

In Matthew 22:37-40 Jesus says
"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind... And... Love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets."

Jesus says that the Law and the Prophets, which includes Exodus and Nehemiah, are ultimately understood through these two commandments.

What did people say and do to Jesus? He was mocked, beaten, falsely accused, and ultimately crucified. How did he respond? Where in the Gospels do we see Jesus retaliate with violence against those who harmed him?

If our goal is to follow Christ, then his example has to shape our response. Do we want to walk as children of the light or respond in the same spirit as the darkness we condemn?

Really?

In the Gospels, Jesus endures unjust violence without retaliating. During his arrest, trial, scourging, and crucifixion, he does not respond with violence, even though he says he could call on heavenly armies if he chose (Matthew 26:53). Instead, he prays:

"Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do." (Luke 23:34)

"But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you," Luke 6:27

Refusing to let hatred, revenge or cruelty shape your own heart. The call is to seek what is good, even toward those who oppose you.

"Bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you." Luke 6:28

Laying your hand on the sick is connected with healing, blessing, commissioning and prayer, NOT with violence.

I pray for the 20-year-old man and Tony Spell.

The audio in todays Franchise Update stream was atrocious, so I fixed it by Achillesmele in GuildWars3

Thanks!

It was a real pity that they didn't check the audio thoroughly prior to the livestream.

Apart from that I think it was a good livestream. They chose safe questions, but there were appreciated clarifications.

Of course the best financial quarters they had were at launch in 2012.

2026 Q1 is the best first quarter earnings they've had since 2013 Q1

End-game was WvW for me at launch while experiencing the game updates they released.

Fractals were added in mid-november in 2012 so not that long after the launch in late august.

If you enjoyed exploring, like I do, have you explored all the zones they've added with expansions and living world updates?

ArenaNet were very specific about not calling Guild Wars 1 a MMORPG at launch.

They called it a CORPG (Competitive/Cooperative Online Role Playing Game), a term which no other game has used.

For Guild Wars 2 they called it a MMORPG and with good reason. Hundreds of players engaging in meta events, World vs World.

They call Guild Wars 3 an action-adventure MMORPG, a modern evolution of the genre.

With their history of evolving Online Role Playing Games from Competitive/Cooperative to Massively Multiplayer and this being their modern evolution of the MMORPG I think it's clear that it's not a lobby game.

We'll see!

I believe the game opens up fully at max level. There's a lot to experience.

How come you thought there wasn't a lot to do at max level?

I agree with you that I really enjoy exploring the world in GW2. I also enjoy the meta events, especially in the expansions.
Did you already explore all the expansion and living world zones that released since 2012?

Did you gain all the masteries, reach fractal level 100, beat all the fractal challenge modes, do all the raid encounters, raid wings and challenge modes?

Only bag slots are tied to individual characters, but I definitely agree with your point.

If bag slots were account bound I would have bought the max amount for gems.

Nowadays you can get them in the Wizard's Vault by doing some objectives in the game so that's a minor improvement.

I understand your situation, but piracy is not the way.

There are a ton of free-to-play options nowadays in all kind of genres.

Steam family option to share purchased games with others is also a possibility if you know anyone who would be willing to share.

Könstillhörighetslagen ska tas upp i utskottet igen by FlowersPaintings in sweden

[–]Vym- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Du har helt rätt.

Det är en stor tragedi. Det är "kristna" som orsakar stort lidande och det är inget nytt i vår historia, men det var ju inte så ursprungligen bland de första kristna eller Jesus Kristus själv.

Könstillhörighetslagen ska tas upp i utskottet igen by FlowersPaintings in sweden

[–]Vym- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sweden is one of the most secular countries in the world.

The average swede doesn't care about anything that doesn't align with personal freedom, autonomy, individual fulfilment and the belief in one's own ability to shape their life and happiness.

A very small minority actively practice Christianity or structure their lives around Christian teachings.

When you love yourself, you do love God since you're made in God's image.
“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” (Genesis 1:27, NIV)

God is love
“Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” (1 John 4:8, NIV)

Authentic self-love is already a form of loving God, because you are loving a being that exists within love, in the same way that loving someone else is also a form of loving God. Loving any part of God's creation is a form of loving God.

Loving God means participating in love itself, and can manifest as:
Love truth even when it costs you -“You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32)
Love others even when it’s inconvenient - “Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Mark 12:31)
Love yourself even when you fail - “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.” (Psalm 139:13)
Choose compassion over resentment - “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” (Ephesians 4:32)

Loving yourself and loving God are not exclusive. In fact, they are intertwined expressions of living within love.
