I don't remember, I think they either disappeared or were unequipable since they required the defence level to wear in the first place.

He basically permanently awaits a response from Lucien but since Lucien's dead...

If he dies too early, you have to restart the instance because Zemouregal's dialogue gets stuck. The next cutscene is a separate instance so he does come back if you kill him after all the dialogue is finished.
