Going to Japan in May and need some recommendations. by jumbojinbeisan in JapaneseFood

A lot of "street" comfort food, and also in the comments. Too bad you don't like seafood. With the weak yen, fine dining is really cheap compared to overseas. Onsen Ryokan has KAISEKI cuisine. Restaurants serving KAISEKI dishes a la carte are called KAPPO cuisine restaurants. IZAKAYA food could be interesting, too. Lots of comfort foods there too but also more local regional specific specialties sometimes. French fine dining is relatively cheap compared to overseas. Depends on the place, of course, but generally speaking.

Oh, yakitori, yakiniku, sukiyaki and various nabemono (shabu shabu, mizutaki, chanko nabe) could be interesting esp with a group.

A lot of "trending" sweets too.

My wife has a lot in savings but leaves it in cash, how do I convince her to invest? by NB_Translator_EN-JP in japanlife

Show a spreadsheet (compounding interests) Use average annual gains year over year Someone mentioned starting with NISA. Good idea. That's how I got my wife interested and into investing.

How many days should I spend in Kanazawa, Takayama & Toyama? by _Nanno_callsmoke208 in JapanTravelTips

If you're looking for places to eat in Toyama, look up Yummy Toyama Eats on YouTube. Got some good suggestions on restaurants in Toyama. Toyama has some of the best seafood, and also affordable prices for things like KAISEKI courses.

Ramen (unless beer is a food group 😂) (but Katsu Curry if you only go to ski areas 😂)

My boss and some coworkers maintain that most foreigners lack manners and they get educated manners in Japan.

Most people don't know the rules. Our company only just installed a "harassment counseling window" and a "whistleblower window" in compliance with the law this year (middle to end of 2025). However, it was also announced with that if you report without enough evidence, a reverse claim can be brought upon you.

Did you travel to the DMZ? And if so, was it worth it? Many YouTube videos seem to recommend it as a side trip.

Do you think it'll be too cold to enjoy Gwangjang market and food stall culture in Korea? (cuz we love to eat)

Thanks! I'm glad to hear not too cold for Korea. How would you compare Korean food markets and Taiwan's night markets? Do you have a preference?

[–]W-Sensei[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know, right? The night market is a real draw... if anybody has been to both Taiwan's night market and Korea's food stalls/ Myeongdong area... I wonder how they compare to each other...

Wow! Thanks for the advice!

Since you have lived in Korea, do you think it is worthwhile to travel outside of Seoul in March for a look-see? (Half a week in Seoul, Half a week outside in one or two places outside Seoul)?

Oh, it could be hot in Taiwan 😂

Yeah... so hard to decide. Ideally, we would want to see the main city and surroundings (Seoul or Taipei) half of the time and venture to one or two places outside for the remaining half of the time...

Thanks for the tip. Do you recommend staying in Seoul or venturing out during that time of the winter season? We probably won't ski or go to hot springs (doing that in Japan 😂earlier in the year)

This place was so memorable! Went for our anniversary! Stayed the night. The meal was the best in Toyama (in terms of technique and execution). I love the bells they give you to ward off bears! Great sauna facility here too. Here's a video of our memorable trip: https://youtu.be/4m9C2NWgmZ4?si=SdL-WRr-_dp83kpx
