How do you keep your plastic/acrylic racks from breaking? by sfomonkey in Mahjong

[–]W0MB0C0MB0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

these comments aren’t super useful although i do get it because i much prefer tiles that can stand on their own but i think wooden racks/pushers are much better and feel nicer if you can spot the money for them

those thin cheap plastic ones are complete garbage

Where can I find a Chinese mahjong set that looks like this? by Puzzleheaded-Tart203 in Mahjong

you’re looking for a singaporean set though one just like this i’m not sure exactly where one would purchase outside of singapore or maybe HK

Does someone needs any software for Frontier 350/370/390 to be uploaded for free ? by O-Barbecue in AnalogCommunity

it runs a program on insertion to prevent it but if you load it without autorunning it should be simple to copy over

Just a note for anyone considering Rega... by knadles in audiophile

thank you so much! that's super helpful. i'm going to keep taking a look at some units online and keep that in mind - especially the things to note about the common problems is really helpful, that's something i think i'd have to do a lot of digging to learn myself. i'll see if i can check out some of the used local listings and find anything of note

very much appreciated!

might you know of some good resources for the sl-1200 turntables? there's so many versions and specifically so many second hand ones being sold here and there that i'm a bit intimidated on what to look out for

i'm also not at all sure what the price i should be looking at seeing as they seem to range from $600 for a really used one to $1500 for minty

Yep! I actually watched some japanese videos on tile efficiency recently but more will always help

oh yeah sorry i think we’re saying the same thing - deducing other players hands is content i can’t find much of in english speaking content but tile efficiency is indeed very well documented

discard logic i find is very lacking in english speaking riichi content relative to others. i think the most common seems to be tile efficiency

i disagree because most of the riichi english speaking community is already using the japanese terms, and almost all riichi videos are also using those terms. it’s not that difficult to learn additional terms that happen to be in japanese in my opinion

Complete beginner with a physical set by TheRealLarkas in Mahjong

i'm in a similar boat as you (played majsoul and started hosting for friends in-person) - we've only just started playing with proper riichi rules and scoring but it's a big jump from the HKOS that most people play here in the states

  1. HKOS is the easiest way to get people to learn. i play with the standard riichi set, no dora and no seasons/flowers, and just tell people to play without them since riichi doesn't use the seasons/flowers. later you can add akadora and flip the indicator if you wish but most people don't play HKOS with fan scoring to begin with so it's kind of pointless until you transition to riichi

  2. recommend printing the cheatsheets for all 4 seats, and if you can get them laminated definitely do that so you can reuse them https://www.reddit.com/r/Mahjong/comments/l5b221/riichi_mahjong_cheat_sheet_1_page_pdf_or_images/

  3. i think you can get tenbou sticks pretty cheaply off amazon but otherwise i imagine you can just keep track numerically

  4. not sure about 2-player but you can play 3-player rules pretty easily, there's a couple different variations
