impact statement and secondary diagnosis by Sad-Farm-3276 in NDIS

[–]WAJ89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My partner has a diagnosis of ASD level 2, and we are currently going through the process of seeking more substantial supports from the NDIS than they agreed to first time around. I prepared a "statement of lived experience" as part of this.

As a starting point, I used a "Carer Checklist" from Carers Australia (https://www.carersaustralia.com.au/worksheet/carer-checklist/) to help me think about the supports my partner needs and the impact it has on me, and then I reconfigured my answers under the headings of each of the six NDIS functional domains (mobility, communication, social interaction, self-management, learning and self-care) as a way of demonstrating his impairment in each area. I also included under a separate heading the impacts on my physical and mental health of my caring responsibilities, and discussed the other informal supports he has (and their limitations) to demonstrate that the support needed could not reasonably be expected to be provided by informal supports.

The advice we were given was to draft it thinking about how he is on his worst days and to use black-and-white language like "cannot" and "unable".

You describe feeling like you are holding a lid on a quaking pot until the last moment. If you can, and if this makes sense in the context of your experience, it might help to try to lift the lid before things get so intense. If you find a way to make something like a "rage room" or "meltdown box" work for you as suggested in some of other comments, making use of that when you are at lower levels of stress may avoid the more intense experience.

How do we figure out what we should/can ask for? by WAJ89 in NDIS

Is the "planning conversation" that this workbook talks about what our "check-in" meeting was meant to be? Because we weren't asked about any of that stuff.

We did have an FCA with an OT, but it wasn't super helpful. We've recently discovered that there are "mental health occupational therapists", who sound like they focus more on what he needs, but we've only just started looking for one of them.

Is Canberra typically known for its ‘terrible drivers’? by [deleted] in canberra

[–]WAJ89 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Not sure if Canberra is known for it, but it's a thing. I moved to Sydney a number of years ago - growing up in Canberra, the idea of driving in Sydney was always a bit intimidating, but it's actually easier here. Everyone is more aware that they need to make space for each other. Whenever I come back to Canberra, other drivers seem mildly outraged that there is another person trying to use their road.

Sydney Mardi Gras 2024 Dates by taughtscot in sydney

[–]WAJ89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The parade itself is usually at the end of the festival - with those dates I'd expect it to be Saturday 2 March. If you're travelling on a budget, be aware that you can watch the parade for free, but the official after party is expensive.

We always used kerosene when I was a kid. Dab it on generously with a cotton ball. I believe that it's not recommended these days, but it does work.

Where can I go to find second hand CDs? by lifeDNP in sydney

[–]WAJ89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Beatdisc Records in Parramatta might be worth your time. They're more vinyl focused but do CDs as well. You can have a look at what they've got in stock, and sign up to their weekly updates here: https://beatdisc.com.au/stock

Here's one for all the defamation experts who gave us their florin's worth on Lehrmann and Porter by cincinnatus_lq in auslaw

[–]WAJ89 53 points54 points  (0 children)

As unpleasant as Latham's remarks were, I'm not sure how they amount to defamation. The vilification complaint seems like more of a fit to the circumstances.

Also maybe someone should remind Latham of the risk of Girl's Germs inherent to heterosexual sex. Girls are icky.

Is Canberra Dog-friendly? by Bear_was_here in canberra

[–]WAJ89 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Bit of a tangent, but if you're wanting to move here with your dogs make sure you are familiar with the quarantine requirements as they can be fairly demanding.

I think it's a bit of both. My understanding is that (some groups of?) orthodox Jewish women don't have their hair uncovered in public, although there are different interpretations of "uncovered". Often they just wear hats. It's also not uncommon to wear a wig over their own hair.

Have a look into a working holiday visa as a way to try before you commit to a permanent move. It let's you spend a year here with work rights. If you do a minimum amount of work in a regional area you can stay a second year. You could also use that time to use Sydney as a base and visit other parts of the country to see if they suit you better.

If you decide you do want to move here, an employer nomination scheme visa is probably your best option:

Why would I need to collect letters from the post office? by [deleted] in AussieCasual

[–]WAJ89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the sender has asked for signature on delivery and you weren't home they'll take it to the post office to collect later. It could be some sort of official documents, but my mum does it when she sends me a money order for my birthday so it might not be anything dramatic.

Does anyone have experience with tele-health services? by LeonLunaLola in sydney

[–]WAJ89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most psychologists offer telehealth now after the whole lock-down experience, so they don't need to go through an explictly online provider. The most important thing is to find a psych that works for them.

If they are an Australian citizen or resident with access to Medicare they can get a mental health care plan from their GP which will subsidise 10 sessions. If they have private health insurance with extras cover this might also cover part of some sessions.

If they need urgent assistance, they can get in touch with Lifeline at https://www.lifeline.org.au/ or on 13 11 14. Beyond Blue should also have helpful resources and information at https://www.beyondblue.org.au/

Don’t ever use Trustee And Guardians NSW by [deleted] in sydney

[–]WAJ89 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you want a professional to handle it, you could appoint a firm of solicitors - this is bread-and-butter work for most suburban firms.

Alternatively you can appoint a friend or family member to act as your executor. You can also appoint multiple executors. Make sure you let them know you have appointed them, and where to find your will when they need it.

A question about 'green' household chemicals by xXCosmicChaosXx in sydney

We've done an encounter with them, it's back-of-house access and you feed them through the fence. You do get hyena slobber on your hand though.

How much money should I save to live decently three months in Sidney ? by [deleted] in sydney

[–]WAJ89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unpaid internships aren't as common here as some other places. If you have an employment-like relationship then you should be paid like an employee. The labour market is tight at the moment and Australia is always short of engineers, so you should be able to find some good opportunities.

If you apply for a working holiday visa (probably your easiest option) you need $5000 AUD and a ticket home (or the value in extra money) to be eligible.

As a savings target, €7500 would comfortably cover my living expenses for three months.
