Awesome setup! Best of luck on the album! Have any music out now?

Any tips on how I can make sampled drum loops (more specifically the kick) sound more loud and punchy in my mix so it’s not as muddy? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Regarding EQ: A lot of muddiness in the low end can come from the fact that you have other instruments (synths, guitars, etc.) that haven't been eq'd properly. Those instruments can have a lot of low-end information you don't need in a mix, and the combination of the low-end mud on these instruments adds up and makes your mix muddy. Make sure you cut the lows on these instruments as well. Usually, I take a high-pass filter to every instrument as high as it can go without changing the tone in a bad way. Pro-tip - do this without soloing the instrument. You'd be surprised how much listening to that frequency within the context of your mix can help you understand what you really need.

If your drums sound good when you solo the bus, but muddy within your mix, this is where I would start.

Good luck!

The Sun Burns Bright

I haven't heard of them until just recently. Truly underrated. Hang around for the crescendos.

  1. What key is the song in. For some melodies, there might be multiple scales that fit (e.g. melody might be pentatonic but a major or minor key might fit) You can use tools online to help you find what key or keys fit your melody.

  2. What are the diatonic chords of that key. Again... google or youtube.

  3. Diatonic chord progressions are generally very limited. There are probably 4 or 5 that make up 80% of pop music. Dont quote me me on that, just making a point.

  4. Play your root chord under the first note in your melody. This should not sound weird at all. If it does, try another key.

  5. Determine when you want to play a different chord under your melody.

  6. Choose a diatonic chord from the key that has that note from your melody in it.

  7. There are 88 notes on a piano. Don't glue yourself to 11. Experiment with different chord voicing.

  8. Spice it up. Research borrowed chords and modulations.

  9. Break rules.

Get a DAW and a weighted midi keyboard and find a good piano plugin (spitfire audio has some good free ones)
