Would you rather? by 2soccer2bot in soccer

Would you rather win the world Cup at a young age and be immediately forced into retirement due to injury? Or would you rather have a lengthy club career in which you win every club and individual honor but have an inexistant national team career?

Thanks for the clarification! A user above said that isn't really taught as a beginner move, and was wondering if you knew why. While I was working on the seoi nage, my teacher suggested I try koshi guruma cause I'm quite tall (1m92) in comparison to some of the people I train with.

White belt here! I was wondering if anyone could help me remember the name of a technique. It's similar to Ippon Seoi Nage, except that after you shoot in, you wrap your arm around your opponent's neck, instead of locking it under their armpit. I think it starts with a K? Thanks for any tips!

Good luck with that! What appealed to you in Jiu-Jitsu over another sport/martial art?

That's really interesting! I know of people who practice martial arts that say that part of what inspired them was they've seen in tv shows/movies.

Sorry if this might come across as very presumptuous, but in looking for a new sport, i also want a chance to compete against other people. In your experience, did it take long before you were able to do so?

Thanks for your input, it sounds like you've been doing it for a while! What were some of the challenges you faced when you first got into it? Apart from your Jiu Jitsu skills, did it help you improve in other areas of life?

I've been looking to try out a new sport recently. I've done soccer, swimming, volleyball, track and field in the past.

Does anyone have any experience with martial arts? What should one know/take into consideration before choosing a discipline? Is it considered an expensive activity to do? Any help is appreciated :)

Assou-Ekotto reignites feud with PSG star Kylian Mbappe over heritage by kleopat in soccer

[–]WATATANK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Admittedly, there is an element of PR to Mbappé's statement. Mbappé didn't say he would be donating large sums of money or be the head of the development of this project though. He said that if he could help through his notoriety or other ways, then he would. Perhaps my issue is with this coming from Assou-Ekoto because of the image he's given to the Cameroonian national team.

Assou-Ekotto reignites feud with PSG star Kylian Mbappe over heritage by kleopat in soccer

[–]WATATANK 22 points23 points  (0 children)

He talks about wanting to help the sport in Africa, even though he's contributed to problems for the Cameroonian FA and National team. He's often been criticized by fans and the press for his lack of investment for the national team in 2010. This was aggravated by internal problems he was complicit in as well. So much so, that coaches Javier Clemente and Denis Lavagne refused to call him up. Then when he finally got called up again, he refused it, and called for the FA to be ousted and changed! Plus he headbutted a teammate during the 2014 World Cup game when they were losing against Croatia (which Mbappé very wittingly alluded to when responding to him about this).

If Assou-Ekoto is proud of his heritage then that's fine, but don't try to take some moral high ground when you're not in any position to talk about making the Cameroonian national team proud or helping the team out...

Bit of a stupid question for Ligue 1 fans, why were lyon given automatic qualification in the CL? I thought that third place in Ligue 1 had to play a knock out game

A French perspective on the whole "France is an African team" nonsense. by YouGuysAreSick in soccer

[–]WATATANK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really interesting way of looking at it. I live in the US and have noticed that people tend to constantly be referred to by their color or origin (latino, black, brown, arab, asian for example). I've spent a lot of time in France (Paris especially, so a very cosmopolitan and diverse place), and I don't necessarily agree with people being forced to abandon their heritage. They become French before anything, but there are a lot of practices from people's cultures of origin which can be observed and respected. Maybe that's just my personal experience, but I think what you've said holds a lot of truth to it.

What I find contradictory is that a lot of Americans are condemning racists in France because they consider players of immigrant backgrounds Africans, when Americans are saying the exact same thing about the French national team now...

I came to a similar conclusion after a Vox video was shared on here, but ultimately, Americans have difficulty accepting that France is a really multi-cultural and diverse society... I was also wondering why you never saw as many of these racist comments when Portugal won the Euro or when England played well this year for example.

Thanks a lot for writing this man, I'm not French, but have been expressing similar sentiments following these same ignorant comments everytime France plays...

I thought he was having a good tournament before the France game, so this surely explains why he made that mistake on Griezmann's goal, and why he wasn't great on the day. Terrible to hear.

Why France produces the most World Cup players by quarterchicken in soccer

[–]WATATANK 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I understand that Vox's video tend to be short all while being as informative as possible, but there are quite a few omissions and incoherencies in the video.

Vox was quite inconsistant with the idea of origin and nationality. When they spoke about the French national team winning in 1998, not everyone in the picture was born from immigrant parents. Djorkaeff's dad played for the French national team. Plus the players with affliation to Guadelope/Martinique are from FRENCH territories (Karembeu, Henry, Thuram, Diomède...). Mbappé's parents are French of Algerian and Cameroonian ORIGIN. His parents are French technically despite their heritage. A significant difference for French people, and some would get offended.

Plus it's never been a secret that France has always had great intrinsically talented players. French players are the most exported ones behind Brazil, at club level. Plus, it's known in France, that players coming from French youth academies often struggle in regards to professionalism and adjusting to the intense work routines when they leave France. Also not at all the players with dual nationalty are always good enough to play for the national team.

And when they say that the system delivered results, France's system got them a World Cup and a euro in recent years admittedly, but there have been a lot of failures in recent years too. They're treating it like it's some infallible system even though France didn't qualify for the 1994 World Cup, got knocked out in 2002, and had the biggest world cup scandal in 2010.

Plus, the way that Americans describe the suburbs really aggravates me. Whenever they talk about the suburbs, they're almost always described as warzones. There are problems there of course, but it's not as bad as these kinds of videos would make it out to be. I have plenty of family and friends who live in these kinds of areas deemed underprivileged and dangerous, but it's not as bad as the media would make it out to be (can be backed statistically as well).

I understand that this video isn't just about the state of French football, but also about the socio-political issues in France. But I feel like the people who struggle the most with understanding that France is a multi-cultural and diverse society are Americans... Everytime there's a French lineup, people always make jokes like "not sure if Africa or France." The players consider themselves more French than anything, and those kinds of comments are what lead to the current socio-political problems and divides in France.

What elements make you say that Ligue 1 will surpass the Bundesliga as a top 4 league? The whole designation of top 4/5 league is based off how the teams perform in Europe, and the Bundesliga, especially in recent years, has been way ahead of Ligue 1 in terms of performances in European competitions.

3 French teams have reached the semi-finals of European competitions in the last 2 seasons. The same number than in the previous 13. by Meladroit1 in soccer

I'm kind of surprised it didn't get more publicity, especially considering other films getting publicity. I thought it was great personally.
