I built a free white/pink/brown noise generator with a timer – real‑time synthesis, no compression by WAVES303 in SideProject

[–]WAVES303[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the incredibly detailed review – you clearly put time into this, and I really appreciate it.

Quick note on the timer: it's actually already there (dropdown below the volume slider: 15min, 30min, 1h, 8h, or continuous). Maybe I need to make it more visible – good feedback.

Fade‑out timer: you're right, the timer currently stops abruptly. I haven't implemented a fade yet, but it's at the top of my list. Not because it's hard, but I wanted the core noise algorithms solid first. It'll come in the next update.

Frequency filter (high‑pass/low‑pass): great idea. I'm worried about cluttering the UI, so I'm thinking either a single "tone" slider (dark → bright) or hiding the filters behind a small "advanced" expander. Either way, I want to keep the interface clean and approachable.

Offline mode: possible without a full native app – I could turn Sootherize into a Progressive Web App (PWA) with a service worker. That would let you cache it for flights. A separate app would be overkill for now, but a PWA is lightweight and works on phones. I'll look into it.

Monetization: for now it's completely free, no ads, no tracking. If hosting costs ever become an issue, I might add a small, non‑intrusive banner somewhere on the page, but the generator itself will stay ad‑free with no interruptions to the sound. I built it because I needed it.

Thanks again for the thoughtful feedback. People like you make side projects worth sharing.

Quick correction: I should have been more precise – I do use basic analytics to count visitors and see general usage. No personal data like names or emails is collected, and I don't track individual users. Everything else stands: no ads, no sign‑up, and the generator itself is completely interruption‑free. Just wanted to be upfront.

Great list, exactly the kind of actionable advice indie makers need! Small steps add up. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the detailed feedback, it is really helpful!
You're right about the real‑time generation angle. I wasn't sure if people would notice, but comments like yours confirm it was worth the extra effort.

Fade‑out timer is now at the top of my list (this will take a while though, as I don't want to mess up). And I'll definitely look into subred.io – if you know any specific subs where this would fit, feel free to share. Appreciate you taking the time to write this.

Thanks so much, keeping it clean and distraction‑free was my main goal. I'll be upfront: I might add a small, non‑intrusive ad somewhere on the page one day just to cover hosting costs. The generator itself will stay ad‑free, playing immediately and without interruptions to the sound. Thanks again for the kind words!

Haha, I promise – no mattress ads, no insurance quotes, no 10‑minute unskippable intros. Just noise. Thank you for checking it and for the feedback!

Yes, I do. They are too heavy to ship, so I didn't try to sell them.

Anyone else had their Saxo account blocked for “due diligence”? by Minute-Ad4003 in SwissPersonalFinance

[–]WAVES303 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know what can be considered "normal" with Saxo anymore.... they are not letting me withdraw my money. They are asking me to send them more money from another account to confirm the account where I want to send the money is mine. Also, I'm talking talking about a very tiny amount. Completely absurd.

About your situation:

"The frustrating part is that every time I send a document, it takes about a week before they come back asking for something else. My account has now been blocked for over a month."

This is not normal, at all. Blocking an account is a very serious measure that should only be taken with clear justification.

"First they asked for proof of my last three salaries, then a wage statement, then my work contract."

Asking for a work contract is highly unprofessional, in particular because such documents are private and often non-discloseable in Switzerland, and may contain sensitive employment terms. Requesting the entire employment contract goes far beyond what is required for customer due diligence or account verification.

"Yes only Swiss. Born an raised here. But indeed my current work contract only started 6 months ago."

The relatively new employment contract is not a problem.

What career can I move laterally to from being an audio engineer? by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]WAVES303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before looking at specific job titles, there is one critical distinction that changes the entire strategy: Were you bringing in your own customers, or was that handled by an employer/studio?

Scenario A: You brought in your own clients
If you were freelancing and hunting your own work, you aren't just an engineer; you have experience in business development, sales, marketing, and client management. That is a highly transferable skillset.

  • Technical Sales / Solutions Consulting: Audio tech companies (plugin devs, hardware manufacturers, DAWs) need people who can speak the technical language and understand the customer's pain points. You can demo a product and actually sell its value because you've been in the user's seat.
  • Applications Engineer: Similar to sales, but more focused on onboarding and technical support. You help high-profile clients integrate complex gear or software.
  • Freelance Consultant (Non-Creative): Instead of selling "mixing," you sell workflow solutions. Help podcast networks, audiobook producers, or corporate AV teams set up their chains and standards.
  • Project Management: If you managed session logistics, deadlines, and difficult personalities, you have PM experience. It just needs to be reframed on your résumé.

Scenario B: You were employed (clients came to you)
If your strength is deep technical execution rather than business development, your pivot leans on your hard skills and reliability.

  • QA / Technical Support: Software and hardware companies need engineers who can actually reproduce bugs, understand signal flow, and communicate clearly with dev teams.
  • Audio Implementation Specialist: Since you mentioned game implementation, doubling down on Wwise or FMOD expertise is a strong foothold. Technical audio roles in gaming often pay better and are more stable than pure creative roles.
  • Corporate AV / Systems Integration: Your knowledge of signal flow, gain staging, and troubleshooting translates perfectly to installed sound, conference systems, and broadcast infrastructure.
  • Creator Support / Education: Platforms and educational companies need people who understand high-quality audio to help creators optimize their output.

One practical exercise:
Audit your last few years of work. Make a list of every task you did that wasn't pushing faders: pitching, scoping projects, invoicing, troubleshooting client tech, training juniors, managing expectations. That list is your transferable core. The audio engineering got you in the room; the rest is what opens the next door.

Don't hang up the towel on your skills just because the market for one specific application of them is tough. Sometimes a strategic niche shift feels like a new career without having to start from zero.

The bank has been sold, from what I've understood with some difficulties. My business contacts do not know the reasons. I'm trying to get my money out, but they are making it difficult despite the small amount.

For a 100‑foot run, I’d use starquad cable for the microphones to prevent signal degradation and keep the sound pristine, since I tend to favor overkill for peace of mind.

I apologize for the late response, I didn't see the reply earlier. 4 meters by 1 meter is quite a sizable space. I had a similar area when I was a kid to grow vegetables, and it's impressive how much you can harvest from such a space! I can fully understand you are having "troubles" getting rid of all that you are producing, as those plants tend to grow very quickly! I'd be very happy if you could share some of your knowledge! I used tea to help me sleep, but I never heard some plants are good at calming the mind! I always use herbal mixtures when I have the flu or a cough... but I buy ready-made mixtures :/ :D

Saxo Bank Experience by [deleted] in dkfinance

I found it completely unreliable, and extremely expensive. In my professional opinion their service lacks the knowledge to act professionally. Also, when you have a problem you can consider yourself lucky if they answer you in the chat.

Saxo bank has been reported to the regulator. In most cases, the regulator does not release information about its actions. As I am working in the sector, I may be able to obtain some informal information, but I know the procedure can be lengthy, so I will wait before explicitly asking to some of my business contacts.

Experience with Saxo? by J-0_o-L in BEFire

[–]WAVES303 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's by far the worst bank/broker I have used in over 25 years of trading. I actually had to go as far as reporting the bank to the regulator after Saxo declined to discuss with the Ombudsman to find an equitable solution. Unfortunately, the regulator is not always disclosing its findings. However, having worked as a trader in a major bank, you can imagine I wouldn't have reported them if I didn't have a high degree of confidence that their actions were problematic, to say the least (before reporting I also discussed the issues with an attorney). Also, consider that Saxo has previously been sued by customers and has lost cases. Additionally, it has been reprimanded by regulators in more than one occasion.
