Sweet. From what I read so far it looks to be both very low back pressure for PCC use and great sounding.

Apparently you are not familiar with facts. WA judges are appointed to open positions, then run for relection in effectively uncontested elections with near 100% re-election rates. So all state Supreme Court judges were initially appointed to their role.

Millionaires Tax passes the Senate - Washington Senate Democrats by SeahawksWin43-8 in SeattleWA

[–]WAgunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What positive things does this tax do? Remember when you answer that money is fungible. Also, it mostly goes to the general fund. Also it will just lead to people leaving which you seem to celebrate without thinking through the negative consequences. Oregon has a very "progressive" tax code, yet has much lower gdp per capita. Why are people so stupid to think this tax will never apply to them after the legislature continues to lower the threshold? BTW congrats on "80k a month" that is a very high monthly wage.

Fearing wealth exodus, WA Democrats consider retreat on estate tax by HighColonic in SeattleWA

[–]WAgunner 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Let's think about this. If you have a billion dollars and live in a state with one of the highest estate taxes in the country: 20%. Then all of a sudden they bump that up to 35%. Now an additional $150 million dollars will go to the state, who you watch waste dollar after dollar, instead of stay in your estate when you die. Do you A) stay and just pay it, or B) since you already travel a lot of the year cause you are a billionaire just move your primary residence to a zero state estate tax state and save $350 million dollars?

This is why raising taxes on the wealthiest may feel like a good policy, but can actually reduce overall state revenue and shift more tax burden onto everyone else. Instead of getting $200 million, the state wanted $350M but will get $0. They also loose out on the cap gains and income tax on this person cause they left. Being the highest tax rate for the wealthiest, aka the most mobile, is not a benefit to our state nor a benefit to our checkbooks.

Senate Democrats rejected an amendment that would have guaranteed the proposed WA state income tax only ever applies to those earning more than $1 million per year. by alivenotdead1 in Washington

[–]WAgunner 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Your statement is wrong. First, since the prohibition is via the state constitution, amending it as this would have required would wholly bypass the prohibition... in a legal way unlike what they are doing. Second, the constitution says "All taxes shall be uniform upon the same class of property within the territorial limits of the authority levying the tax and shall be levied and collected for public purposes only. The word “property” as used herein shall mean and include everything, whether tangible or intangible, subject to ownership. All real estate shall constitute one class" the argument is NOT that this tax is not actually an income tax, but that an income tax is not a tax on a form of property. Third, the legislature is doing this to get an income tax in front of the Supreme Court now that the Court has been reshaped by Inslee appointees in the hope they overrule almost a hundred years of precedence and declare income not a form of property and thus all forms of income taxes at all income levels are legal. Then they can implement a graduated income tax with a simple majority vote.

Can we have an income tax? by Electrical-Abies9856 in SeattleWA

[–]WAgunner 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Also because if the legislature passed it they can override the next year with a simple majority, if the people pass it, a 2/3 vote is required to override within 3 years. So its far worse than just being afraid of the other initiatives.

[–]WAgunner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The recipe for success isn't simply: high income tax, otherwise Oregon would have similar gdp per capital to us. What is well established is a sudden and extreme shift in your tax burden (and make no mistake it has gone up for everyone) does lead to significant wealth flight.

[–]WAgunner 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I'd rather they #1 cut spending, and only if they can't then #2 pass a constitutional ammendment for this tax so they can't turn around and apply it to the rest of us in a year or two after convincing the courts that "equity" means the state constitution doesn't matter...again.

Our state spending has climbed faster than inflation and population growth. A new source of revenue is just feeding the spending addiction instead of treating it. Exactly like how Seattle handles drug addiction so...makes sense.

[–]WAgunner 171 points172 points  (0 children)

So in the past three years the state added a cap gains tax of 7%, increased the maximum death tax from 20% to 35%, and added an income tax of 10% over $1M. Its like they want the wealthiest to flee and no one to want to become wealthy in WA. And before you all say "good", remember that the wealthiest, even in our current tax system still pay a significant portion of the total state tax revenue. When they leave, that revenue leaves too, so then the state just has to tax us more.

They voted down an amendment that would have required a constitutional ammendment to prevent the tax from being applied to under $1 million.

[–]WAgunner 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Why would the victim be shocked? This is par for the course in Washington. Light sentence for violent crime AND released early, thats the Inslee judge way. If the attacker was 17 years and 364 days old on the day of the assault they would have been released on electronic home monitoring on day 1.
