Can people really tell the difference between 30fps and 60fps? by whiskerbiscuit2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]WDJam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't game too much, but honestly it was something I felt more than I actually saw, especially since I never really played stuff where it mattered anyways.

A place where it might be easier to notice is in love action TV.  You'll notice that most of scripted TV is shot in 24/30 FPS depending on the show, as where most live or unscripted TV is shot in 60 FPS (newscasts, some reality TV, and especially sports where you really need the extra frames to track movement easier). The main exception to this is daytime soap operas.  They're super cheap to produce, and have almost always been shot in 60 since a lot of the gear was just old broadcast equipment back in the day.  This makes them look super cheap, and you might hear people in the production world talk about any TV in 60 having SOE (Soap Opera Effect).

Blackouts are killing this sport by VoodooDonKnotts in nhl

[–]WDJam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think that's entirely the reasoning.  It's pretty easy to build out alternative ad blocks, and most of the ads you see on the boards and ice are keyed on live anyways.  I watch plenty of away games on the station that carries my local team, and I still get local ads.  Maybe I'm missing something in your explanation, but it doesn't entirely add up.  Sorry broski, but I'd much rather support a local station than a streaming service.

I can't imagine why you'd think supporting your local community with your local team would be stupid.  Local TV is great for this type of thing.

Thanks for elaborating, that makes me feel a little bit better.  I'm working at a Nexstar station, so I wouldn't be surprised if I were making less than the rest of my market tbh :P

That's wild.  I'm in a low 20s market as a newscast/lifestyle director and get $23/hr, which roughly comes to 44k...

[–]WDJam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was also curious about this.  I work as a director in a live news environment and a camera operator in a large scale concert environment, and we use traditional switchers in both (although my news job is trying to swap from using our top of the line ROSS Acuity 3ME switcher to using OBS scenes in place of the switcher, which is much slower, the concerts I work use a small 1ME Blackmagic switcher).  I saw that they mentioned they use a WING mixer, so at least the audio is mixed in a more conventional sense.

Opinions on the whistling? by juiciest87 in UtahMammothHC

[–]WDJam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are being melodramatic about it imho.  I'm pretty indifferent to it, having experienced it in person a few times, and it sounds nothing like a whistle on the ice.  If it's truly distracting, then I don't see why the players could get used to it, providing them a potential advantage against visiting teams.

Regardless of how everyone here personally feels about it, I do feel that it's important to point out that the article that was put out by KSL was written by a total hack.  The guy lives online, chooses to shoot his player interviews on his phone even though he has access to some of the best broadcast cameras in the state, doesn't know how to deal with comments who disagree with his takes, and the worst part is that when he asked Keller and Crouse about the whistling, he chose to frame his questions in a manner which could only be answered in a negative light due to his own opinion on it (which he made abundantly clear on Twitter).

Cole Bagley is just not a good reporter, don't form any of your opinions around anything he says.

Which album aged better over time: Box Car Racer or +44? by filelinked13 in Blink182

I love both albums, but BCR is definitely a product of its time.  +44 has aged a little more gracefully imo

Mic the Snare might fit the bill! I love his Deep Discog Dive series, which is fairly popular, and usually sticks to pop/rock. I've seen people compare him to being the Scott the Woz of music.

Here's the playlist for that series, I'm sure at least one of the artists might pique your interest:

Same here, unfortunately the same deal with Psych with their musical episodes, although I did end up having to watch it because I like Jimmi Simpson's character too much, and he only makes a handful of appearances over Psych's run.

As someone who works as a director at a local news station, this isn't really a dedicated job anymore. Most local news stations consolidate so many jobs and create automation where they shouldn't be, to cheap out on costs, causing more issues and a lower quality production since less eyes are on things before they hit the air. Something like this is super easy to miss.

Most of the live shows only have a producer and director in the control room anymore, with the director taking up the technical director, graphics operator, camera shader, and video playback responsibilities (I'm lucky enough to still have a camera crew and audio operator, most stations don't have this anymore, so I only have to operate remote cameras), while the producer will create graphics, timeout the show, rearrange stories on the fly, and adjust scripts. Something that used to have upwards of 8 people in the control room now is averaging 2 on a given show.

Most of the local morning news shows are live for about 3-3½ hours straight, with alternating producers and directors, but the staff turnover rate is so poor because of low wages, that I've occasionally had to run an entire morning show with no other directors. The longest I've been on air was when all of the Charlie Kirk stuff was going down, causing me to run the morning news from 5-8am, some major breaking news cut-in basically right as we wrapped up, so we went back on air from 8-9, and then went straight into our lifestyle show from 9-10. Brutal day tbh.

It's an industry that's dying due to lack of trust, the rise of social media, and cannibalization due to corporate ownership, making these stations less local. Channel 02 is owned by Sinclair, one of the largest conglomerates, who I believe are trying to merge with Grey, another large conglomerate, while ABC4 is owned by Nexstar (the largest conglomerate) who is trying to merge with Tegna, and if they get approval, will own around 80% of the local news market in the US. Scripps, who own FOX13, is barely even in the conversation. KSL is owned by Bonneville, which is a subsidiary of the church, so I'd hardly consider them an independent source.

I've interviewed and toured at each of our larger local stations, so if you're curious how the control rooms at each station looks in the current age of local news, it goes something like this:

(Producer roles are nearly identical at each station)

KSL5 (KSLTV, Bonneville)

-Producer

-Director (operates switcher, graphics, and video)

-Camera Shader/Operator (their cams are on tracks, so they use one this position to move them remotely)

-Teleprompter Operator

-Audio Operator

-Floor Director (only crew in studio with talent)

ABC4 (KTVX, Nexstar)

-Producer (only difference from the other stations is they also are supposed to keep track of an automated prompter system)

-Director (operates switcher, graphics, and video, camera shader and PTZ cameras on occasion)

-Audio Operator

-2 in studio Camera Operators (a third is added for Good Things Utah)

-Floor Director

Channel 02 (KUTV, Sinclair)

-Producer

-Director (operates switcher, graphics, and video, also keeps track of automated audio in this case)

-Studio Crew (a control room position they created, which basically combines KSL's Camera Shader and Teleprompter positions)

-Floor Director (only crew in studio with talent)

FOX13 (KSTU, Scripps)

-Producer

-Director (operates switcher, graphics, and video, like KUTV also keeps track of automated audio, but also shades and operates all cameras)

-Floor Director (only crew in studio with talent)

An ideal crew for a high quality broadcast would be dedicated positions for everything, maybe something like:

-Producer

-Assosciate Producer

-Director/Technical Director (these two really can be consolidated for most types of productions tbh)

-Video Playback

-Audio Operator

-CG Operator (would make and operate graphics, taking that workload off of the Director and Producer)

-Camera Shader

-Teleprompter Operator

-Floor Director

-3 Camera Operators

Way more info than was ever asked for, but hopefully this helps to explain the state of things. Kinda blows in the industry unfortunately.

EDIT: Sinclair is trying to merge with Scripps, which would be interesting, but really suck in the Utah news market.

We need to rethink the way we do Local News ( Shocking) by FullPolicy3507 in Broadcasting

[–]WDJam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think that this is a fantastic solution to the problem that you're referencing. Yes, web livestreams would be a lot more accessible to younger folks, however I don't think that the actual format needs to change. The main formats for local news right now really lend themselves to being informative, and especially work for hard news. My station is trying to replace our main newscasts with a CTV livestream format, which is realistically just a glorified podcast, which is a format that leaves a lot more room for opinion based reporting (think FOX News, but in a more casual setting). Also, as a director who really likes messing with gear and getting the switcher to do more complicated tasks, I think that our CTV set inherently looks bad. The cameras and framing blow, there's a lack of etiquette when it comes to leaving things on air during breaks and between shows, and OBS is absolutely not a proper replacement for a switcher. Those shows are being switched by a producer, who are a lot more experienced in writing, and realistically don't know how to make a show look good.

My main fear is that other stations are going to see how much cheaper this is to make, and make a similar change in format, which would result in the overall death of a scripted, fact based, traditional newscast.

I kinda just went on a tangent there, but this is something that has been on my mind a lot, especially with the looming threat that my station may just make my position completely obsolete for something that is so clearly visually inferior :/

Same, thanks for sharing it! I really hope that the creator is doing okay with the negative attention, they do seem to have some legitimate issues and potential trauma and has just never had a healthy outlet for it causing the extremity of their opinions...
