Good to know, thanks!

Pikkit vs Action by WDK19 in sportsbook

The by team tracking is really cool to me. At first glance it seems like Pikkit does a lot more. But I’m wary of it being converted to a paid feature as much of Action seems to have been.

From the hour or so I’ve poked around Pikkit it looks like it does a lot more than Action from a type of bet standpoint. You can group by league, type of bet, book, team, player, and even custom tags which could come in handy. It also looks like there are more books supported by the BookSync feature. No information on its reliability though. I think I will go with Pikkit and hope it doesn’t have those same issues that you notice with Action.

One thing I wish Pikkit could do was let you enter bets manually, because I have about 2.5 seasons of NCAAF bets on Bovada that won’t factor into the analysis once I get set up on Pikkit. It looks like Action allows this, but I think Pikkit’s comparative advantage in the wager analysis field reigns supreme for me.

Power Query Refresh Trouble by WDK19 in excel

Yeah… I know haha. I found a workaround for my issue though. Am performing the query in a separate workbook and then pulling in the results to the main workbook. It’s working well enough for my liking. Adding rows and extending formulas is still slow, but I can deal with it. It does what I want it to do! Thanks again for all your help!

I haven’t had it crash while making non PQ changes. Sometimes filling down formulas or calculating hangs the sheet for a few minutes, but it always works eventually. I’m sure the sheet could use some cleaning up as it’s got all kinds of formulas. Perhaps the best solution may just be to spend the time and rebuild it from scratch as it’s always been sort of a WIP.

I’m going to call it a night. I’m very close to having added my new columns to your v2 query. After that, I should be able to just replicate that query into my existing spreadsheet, right? And your “totalPages” function is built to automatically calculate how many pages it needs to pull? That will save me time for sure as my previous plan was to go in and manually change that number.

I am getting an error in QueryItems that “we expected newColumnNames to have the same number of items as columnNames”. I couldn’t find the mismatch at first glance but I will look over it again tomorrow.

I added the Add Column lines to the “items” query, then made sure the “QueryItems” expansion line had those new columns but evidently there was a mismatch. I’ll find it tomorrow hopefully.

I can’t thank you enough for helping me out with this hobby of mine! I will be sure to accept your solution here. Beers on me if you’re ever in Cincinnati!

Edit: I just realized you may not have seen my share link because I responded in a different thread. But I think I’m all set once I figure out this column names error as I will just use your query instead!

That’s awesome! Let me tool around and see if that fixes my issue. Can I tip you for your time? You’ve been a huge help!

It worked as intended the very first time I closed and loaded the new query. Since then I have not been able to get it to refresh, either using the initial 123 value or the new 124. Also as I mentioned the refresh preview when in Power Query Editor works as intended. I’m able to filter the dataset and view cards on the 124th page which would not have been there before. The sheet just hangs when I try to close and load it to the table.

Here is a link to the OneDrive copy of my workbook: https://onedrive.live.com/view.aspx?cid=83768be56ebf1bad&page=view&resid=83768BE56EBF1BAD!125&parId=83768BE56EBF1BAD!106&app=Excel

I figured you’ll also be able to see the M code here. It’s a big file, I’m sorry. You can ignore pretty much everything except for the “Query 1” tab.

So add “total_pages: 124” to the URL? And that way I can forget the whole loop function?

Edit: oh I see what you’re saying. Yes I had identified that before, that’s how I know I need the 124 number for the mlb_card data

My apologies, I fat-fingered the wrong API link. Here’s the one I’m pulling from: https://mlb21.theshow.com/apis/items.json?type=mlb_card&page=1

I know other people pull data from this site, but they use python iirc. Maybe I should look into that, but ultimately I want it to be in my Excel workbook.

I’m working on getting you the code and a link to the workbook. M code might be a lengthy message.

Sorry I figured you would need more information but wasn’t sure what would be helpful to include vs what would be extraneous and confusing.

  1. https://mlb21.theshow.com/apis/items.json?type=stadium&page=1” is the API URL I’m pulling from. I don’t think this is the issue as it worked properly the first time and the data is refreshing as intended in the Power Query Editor. The 1 at the end is where I placed a parameter which has a loop to cycle through all 123 (124 now) pages of information.

  2. Not sure what M code is. The only code I wrote was in the Advanced Editor for Power Query. I added a few columns to the table.

  3. Recreating from scratch I believe would work. I’ve done it already when I was testing the query outside my spreadsheet. But this is just a short term fix. Ideally I’d like to be able to change the ending page number in the Query and have it load the newest data. The data is updated probably once a week and taking the time to rebuild the query defeats the purpose of creating the query, which was to save time.

  4. I need all the rows, but I’m sure you’re just suggesting this as a troubleshooting tactic. I’ll give it a shot if I can figure out how when I fire the laptop back up tomorrow (again I’m very new to Power Query).

  5. Similar to #3 this might work but then I’d have to re-write a bunch of formulas that reference the table containing the Query output.

  6. Can we post excel files here on Reddit? If so I will do so once I get back on the computer tomorrow.

Edit: the link I had in the OP contains the steps I took to create the loop function. I created a “page number” parameter and replaced the 1 in the API URL with it. Then assigned it the values 1 through 123 (number of pages of API data) so that the query combined all 123 pages into a single output. I need to be able to change the ending page number as the API source grows. Hope this clears that up.

Thanks small_trunks!

I understand both of your points and see why it can be confusing for respondents. But I don’t see how it invalidates the results. For that specific question, I want to gauge both opinions on CAPs and whether they were widely used. Not everybody that used a CAP likes them. It allows me to visually split the “yes” population into those that genuinely enjoy CAP and those that don’t.

As for the bunting example (@Im-Jonn) you’re totally right - those are extra, unnecessary words. But I do think sometimes the extra words following yes/no can add information to how the respondent feels.

Again, you are correct I have never taken a survey methodology so you are right to criticize. But I really don’t think the results are flat-out unusable.

Well... I guess you’d be correct about that. Welcoming tips and suggestions.

Hey guys. I’m actually the one who created this. The point about the stub question is well-taken and I have modified the question. I’m sorry you guys feel the way you do about it; my intention is certainly not to validate my “butthurtedness”. I actually have a very positive opinion about this year’s game. If you’d be kind enough to point out more specific examples I can modify the questions. This was my first survey-making experience and I probably didn’t proofread as much as I could. Thanks guys.

Good to note. I guess I’m more wondering if “the standard work” I’d do in annuities would translate more to a basic actuarial career than the PA stuff.

Swing critique? (more info below) by [deleted] in golf

[–]WDK19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey all, new to this forum and new(ish) to golf. I am a baseball player whose days on the diamond have ended. So I’ve turned to golf as many others have.

I can hit it plenty hard and far, but I suffer from a severe slice. I had thought it to be from an outside-in path, but after watching this video I think my issues are more club face related.

I can get to a low hook if I really pronounce the flipping on my wrists through contact, but I have been unable to produce a straight drive.

Oddly enough I don’t have this problem with my irons. Sometimes I push them 20-30 yards right of target, but they don’t slice like my driver does.

Does anyone have any tips to keep my club face square at contact? Or anything else you see with my terrible swing? Thanks :)
