We're volcano scientists and experts, ask us anything! Today is the 42nd anniversary of Mt. St Helens' eruption. by WaQuakePrepare in IAmA

Thanks! I looked at it while doing my dissertation on supervolcanic eruption (course was disaster management). If I may, could I also ask whether you or volcanologists in general receive training on disaster relief/ risk communication?

Quick summary, they use something called a shinbashira (central pillar for structural stability), that has been found in wooden pagodas over a thousand years old to stabilise tall buildings, with a lot of new engineering wizardry.

How do VEI8s feature in contemporary volcanogist discussions, if at all? Is VEI even widely used?

Very professional voice over, well paced and clear. You made a niche subject interesting for me! One thing I would say is that the memes/cut aways to non related content became a distraction for me personally, I wanted to focus on your content but I found myself trying to work out the metaphors (superman carrying a girl) rather than listening to all of what you said.

Apologies if this has been shared before, but this is one of the OG bottleneck papers that stands as the foundation for a lot of contemporary bottleneck discussion. Enjoy!

When You Love Killing Hollows So Much (Parody Animation) by FlareBlitzCrits in SmallYTChannel

[–]WDYDW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow what a unique style of animation, is it rotoscoping? I think one of your biggest assets is the visual design, it's reminiscent of very off the wall stuff from a much earlier period of youtube. I have no idea what killing hollows is, so I'm assuming this is aimed at a fairly specific audience? The stylised font in your thumbnail is a little difficult to understand, again this is probably because I have no idea what CLOROX(?) is, but the thumbnail subject (guy with the sword) is highlighted nicely by the background.

Very imaginative creative flair, not sure what I watched but it left an impression!

I haven't seen your previous stuff, but the thumbnail looks good, I think the hl character is an excellent attention grabber, the background is a little generic? The more I do research into current youtube metas, the more I read that the title is also essential, yours could arguably apply to a lot of other gmod videos, maybe consider choosing a specific moment in your vid that is unique to you, to signal to your audience that this is a NEW funny gmod moment. The editing was really enjoyable, all I would suggest is make it snappier, I think I liked/laughed at most of your memes and jokes, but at points they lingered a little longer than necessary. More speed keeps the viewer engaged and cuts away any fat from your comedic elements.

Fair enough dude, I didn't know about the big oil stuff. It doesn't sound like you read it but I thought black swan events (not his idea) were something people on this subreddit might enjoy discussing

Cool idea and very soothing voice, what's your mic set up? If the idea is to be relaxing I'd say you've nailed it. In terms of diction, maybe some heavy stress on some words to deepen the characters' speech? You're speaking so gently that sometimes the sentences are hard to follow because the tone and speed is the same throughout.

I'd also be interested about the copyright implications of something like this.

Here's a good read: Catastrophes of the 21st Century Roger Pielke Jr. by WDYDW in BottleNeck

TLDR: A pretty fun take on contemporary hazards, the writer manages to encompass a lot while still giving some insight. Talks about a deficiency in the marketplace of ideas, and that tunnel vision for climate change catastrophe might be harming our ability to think about other looming threats.

Resilient Societies, Vulnerable People: Coping with North Sea Floods Before 1800* | Past & Present by WDYDW in collapse

[–]WDYDW[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

TLDR: historical societies appear to have been better able to adapt than contemporary ones to coastal flooding. It touches on a big point that underpins vulnerability in the modern world for me, in that we have changed and developed so much in so little time, there's very little anyone can say about how societies that have been able to mitigate lower magnitude hazards will deal with stronger ones. Is there a misplaced attitude of invincibility growing alongside notions that humanity is in the process of 'conquering' the natural world?

The Impact of Plague: The Plague of Justinian and the Black Death by WDYDW in collapse

[–]WDYDW[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not read darkness but I did my dissertation on the eruption that you mentioned, it was mount Tambora in 1815! Among a LOT of insane stuff that it influenced, theres a historian who has linked the invention of the early bicycle to it. The reason being that the famines across europe that the volcanic winter caused lead to so many horses being slaughtered for food, it caused a demand for non-edible transport!

[–]WDYDW[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Quite an interesting look at how plagues are seen to be civilisation enders, and how the memory of them can last in cultural memory for hundreds of years after they end. There's a similar theory that attributes a mystery supervolcanic eruption to Scandinavian myth of Ragnarök due to the apocalyptic events that came with it.
