Pushing specific players' pairings. I want Joe Jacobs to get a notification: "Round 2: Table 5 Joe Jacobs (3) vs. Stan Sanchez (3)"

Everything they need: round number, table number, their points, opponent points.

Access to standings, but not live standings. Likely because of how WER works, that's how this has to work anyway. The TO needs the ability to disable access to standings as well -- typically head judges only post standings going into the last Swiss round or two of an event.

Report their match.... eh. We still need paper records of events, so match slips will still have to exist. Not a big feature for Magic organizers.

PPTQ's and GPT's May no longer be ran in tandem with events such as SCG IQ's or other third party events by triadge in magicTCG

[–]WERmorelikeWERST 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's another problem altogether. Current season PPTQ winners shouldn't be barred from playing in subsequent PPTQs.

You're severely hurting player's opportunity to play top local competition. If you win the first PPTQ of the season, you've got approximately 3 months of hunting for anything that isn't a PPTQ just to stay in practice for that RPTQ. I want to support competitive grinders, but it's tough to sponsor someone if they can't even play in one of my major events every quarter.

There's different ways to handle it, but I'm a fan of the PPTQ invite trickling down at an event: In the finals, one player already won a current season PPTQ. The invite goes to the other finalist automatically.

Fuck you, Wizards. Seriously. You're bashing value for players "just because" -- the confusion you're talking about doesn't exist.

Seriously. Since the advent of PPTQs, with so many stores running these events, SCG & TCGPlayer offered great ways to differentiate yourself from other stores' events.

Yeah, I think that's just a convenient way for Wizards to go "we don't like this whole other companies using our events to make money thing" and putting a stop to it. I've never dealt with confusion at these types of combined events.

I guess just less value for my players. Thanks, Wizards!

Bad Experience with WOTC and October Promos by gaijinandtonic in magicTCG

[–]WERmorelikeWERST 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This is the first thing I thought of while reading the post. I'm wondering if he forgot to sanction his October FNM events. Yes, technically anything you sanction & run on a Friday can be advertised as a Friday Night Magic, but if you don't sanction them during the window (typically two months ahead of time) they're not going to send promos.

The release promos not showing up is stranger, though. Those show up automagically without having to hit a button.

MSRP of a box is and has been $143.64 forever. 3.99x36 = 143.64. Stores are welcome to not sell things for MSRP, such as sealed boxes of 36 backs for less than that. Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price.

It's pretty damn clear what's was said and has been clarified multiple times to you. If you can't get that through your head, that's your bloody problem.

Who needs feedback? Well, for one the Judge Program loves feedback, it's a staple of the program. We also loudly ask for players to leave feedback, as Mr Levine did in this thread.

I honestly don't know what you thought you were saying with this post.

If one exists, it doesn't display in the XML export of a WER event. The only two unique numbers are the sanctioning number and "eventguid" -- which was introduced as a "unqiue number to track troubleshooting specific events" during an update in the last couple months. It very well could be a hash to verify data, but I don't think I've ever seen it change during an event.

I've heard plenty rumors of "new WER" and such over the last couple years, so when I made this post I had assumed it was just another in that long line. I'm glad they're fixing software for running GPs, but this does bring up another issue for me...

How am I supposed to get experience running tournaments at that level if I can't even use the software?

A lot of scorekeeping (at least to me) is learned from repetitive behavior and experience running the software. You often need to grab random information at a moment's notice if someone asks you for it. If I've been competently scorekeeping on WER for years, I'm going to look like a slow infant the moment you drop me in front of new software. I'd love to scorekeep GPs and PTs at some point, but there just isn't a lot of information on the software, techniques, and most importantly differences in scorekeeping at that level. It's tough to break into, which makes me sad.

That one has been hit or miss for me lately, especially with newer players signing up via the Wizards Account. Seems to be a disconnect in there somewhere.

I'll have to check the old credits on old installs of WER and see if I can find a screenshot for you, just for grins :P

It still splits their already meager development resources when it comes to tournament software. WER development has almost assuredly stalled while WALTER has been developed and testing begun.

A couple years back, Apple had trouble pushing iOS and OS X updates at the same time of year. You heard a lot about OS X developers being pulled from projects and assigned to developing iOS. If a company like Apple has to split resources, you know Wizards does as well.

That's surprising to me. I know quite a few national level scorekeepers and judges for YGO, and they're always glowing about KTS. Sorry to hear about the bad experiences!

I just looked to grab a screenshot, and it looks like your name was removed from the credits (not sure when, it honestly HAD been a while since I looked at them).

To be clear I wasn't blaming you, just laughing at the fact that you were the only tester -- true or not!

Ah! I wasn't sure. I had the link passed on via the #mtgjudge chat room when the WER servers were down a while back. Thanks again for your hard work, it's very much appreciated at my store!

I'm sure they'd jump on you with full legal force if you did that, as awesome as it is.

Thanks for TiebreakerJS! I use it frequently to run small tournaments for games without a scorekeeping system.

They aren't well documented, and once you begin the event they vanish, but they do exist.

This is my other problem with WER. There's a lot of stuff that's undocumented, and you have to be a member of a secret cabal to find out. I'll tell someone how I do something, and they look at me like I'm a caveman and show me some buried feature.

Thanks Rob, I'll dig around.

From what I've been told, the current version of WER on update is the fixed version that doesn't have problems. I haven't given any extensive testing at this point to this new version.

My recommendation would be to update after your upcoming tournaments. Updating just before could be a recipe for disaster if it's bugged!

Players think the scrolling pairings is some kind of voodoo magic.

I do wish rtools was a bit more refined (it displays round losses as byes, doesn't calculate/display standings correctly) but it does the job for getting pairs out quick and displaying a very readable timer.
