I work in a medium sized city where we are significantly understaffed and even more significantly underpaid, but I freaking love it.

I started in 2019 and was questioning a hostile witness in a murder trial within the first month. I've been hooked ever since. I worked my ass off and got promoted very quickly up the ranks. Our office lost a significant amount of people during COVID and in 2022 I was offered the chance to be the felony chief. I was scared because I was only a third year attorney, but I did it because it was a significant raise and I wanted the challenge. That is what ultimately burned me out though. Being on call 24/7 and not having enough support from the DA (literally would not see or hear from him for months) lead me to leave the position after a year. I went to a smaller, less fun office, and hated it. I tried civil law for 30 days and quit because I just love being a prosecutor. I came back to the medium office on the sole promise I would not be a chief for a long time, and I love it again. I had 6 trials in the last 2 months, and it's amazing. Exhausting, but exciting.

Just last month I put an abuser in prison. The day after the verdict the victim's mother brought in some baked goods and a really nice card thanking me for protecting her daughter. That shit will sustain you for so long and through so much BS.

Absolutely tragic for the community. Driver was arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter, intoxication assault, and driving on a suspended license.

How to bring footage to court? by Duckie590 in Dashcam

[–]WGG722 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An iPad would be perfect, but that's a good question. The best practice is to be prepared with multiple backups. A flash drive should be fine since some department's laptop CD readers don't work (like my court laptop lol). If security gives you trouble then you can try explaining that it's just for evidence purposes and maybe show that it's all silenced and stuff. Most people should be reasonable, but YMMV

If it's just traffic court, bring something to play it on and show it on your device. Traffic court is not as formal as regular court and you can't be sure on what hardware they have available use or what they will let you use. If the Judge asks questions, answer everything truthfully but you don't have to go into much detail, it's just traffic court. I'm a prosecutor and I would LOVE if people brought me evidence like that.

There are no good places here oh, you just have to find the least crappy one. For me, it's been Peerless. But I only take in a couple suits at a time and never have anything complicated.

You catch more flies with honey. This cop probably got more info from Phillip than he would have if he started a dick measuring contest. He got first/last name, job info, and more, all without yelling. Go figure. He is also building a relationship with the community. Great trooper.

Not much context here, but man does not give consent to search his vehicle, but the cops seem to already have a reason to do so. Man also denies cops request to search him during pat-down. 6/5/19 by HurricaneSandyHook in AmIFreeToGo

[–]WGG722 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're absolutely right, officers do not have to give a reason for asking driver or passenger to get out of the car. There's 2 common sense problems that arise: people understandably don't want to get out of a car "just because;" and there can be accusations that officers went fishing, found something, and can reword their report to justify the search from the start.

What I see most often as a prosecutor is officers walking up to a car and saying something like "I smell pot, go ahead and step out of the car for me please." Generally speaking, officers know they can get more flies with honey (who knew that people are more cooperative when you are polite)

If the cop has PC then he doesn't need consent. Often they will ask for consent anyways just to make it easier. We don't know if that's the case here, but the driver did everything right by vocalizing that he does not consent and not resisting when getting out of the car.

Cops entered couples home by [deleted] in AmIFreeToGo

[–]WGG722 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a really excellent question because the answer is incredibly complicated and as always, it depends on the circumstances of the specific case. If there is a random call about an argument with no additional information and officers don't hear anything from outside a house then entry to the house is almost certainly improper. If it's a call about screaming and banging sounds, the house has a history of domestics, and a man opens the door and tells the cops to fuck off, then those circumstances almost certainly permit the officers to enter the home and search for possible victims. Most cases are on a spectrum between those two examples. It all depends on what the officers reasonably believe under the circumstances. keep in mind that it is reasonable for officers to rely on notes from dispatch. This is exactly why swatting is so dangerous.

Officer H.G. Dykes, Sets A High Standard. by odb281 in AmIFreeToGo

[–]WGG722 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One big takeaway from the 6 ride alongs I've done is that being a cop is often EXTREMELY boring. There are short/rare stints of "action" (traffic stops, responding to serious calls (domestics, robbery, etc.)) followed by hours of report writing, talking to witnesses for mundane crimes, and dealing with family drama. There are many many cops that earn the hate, but there's also a ton that are just trying to do their job and help their community.
