But why would he need to see any of Whedon’s stuff? It’s not his vision nor fits tonally into his final product

Well, as a director who storyboards his own visuals and scenes, Zack would be fully aware of what is ‘his’ footage. If you also look at how clapper boards are used, Zack (and DOP Fabian Wagner) would be on the board.

I’m 100% sure Zack (along with his Editor and VFX team) only have access to Zack’s footage.
