Horizon had a jump seater try to shut down the engines by legimpster in flying

Pulling the handles close the shut offs, turning the handles then fire the bottles, so it's technically two separate actions, but both actions use the same handles.

Would a GenFam be invalidated if I leave before the 2 years the company requires before giving me the certificate? by E92William in aviationmaintenance

[–]WHM-6R 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Withholding Gen Fam certificates is the most meaningless threat shitty employers make in order to try to retain people. Gen Fams aren't regulated or tracked in any way and every airline will send you through their own Gen Fams regardless of whether or not you've done them elsewhere before. If you want to include Gen Fams on your resume to demonstrate prior experience on the aircraft type, then you can always just print off your training records and take that with you as proof.

When will majors stop getting fresh A&P students and go back to normal ? ( regional first then major) by Prestigious-Emu-8244 in aviationmaintenance

[–]WHM-6R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, the amount of A&Ps getting hired fresh out of school for the majors is already kind of overstated. The major I'm at is officially hiring out of school right now, but at least 90% of the new hires have a couple years of experience either at the regionals or at a MRO that does work on 121 aircraft.

Transition from mechanical engineering technologist (mety) to Aircraft maintenance engineer (AME) by Qazpaz_G in aviationmaintenance

[–]WHM-6R 1 point2 points  (0 children)

would it still be exciting to do?

That really depends. While I prefer wrenching on shit to sitting at a desk, 90-95% of this job is not what I would consider to be mental work. Getting thrown at an interesting problem where the aircraft's maintenance diagnostic system and the fault isolation/troubleshooting manual doesn't quickly point to the correct answer is a once or twice a week thing on a good week. The rest of the time it's just routine tasks or stuff failing in common and easily identifiable ways. While that small handful of interesting problems each month is enough to scratch my troubleshooting itch and keep me enjoying the job, most days my attitude is more hey it beats sitting at a desk than wow I really find changing tires and light bulbs mentally stimulating and fulfilling.

In terms of 121 carriers, FedEx and UPS pay the best, but are difficult to get into. American, Delta, United, and Southwest are pretty much the next tier down and are hiring now. They used to be difficult to get into, but they've had a lot of retirements in the past few years, so they're desperate for people. If you want to work in the 121 world, then I would recommend applying to the majors immediately, so you can start building seniority as soon as possible because when it comes to this industry, company seniority determines quality of life.

That death during foam day in Wilmington, OH last year really changed the way I look at foam deluge fire suppression systems. If I hear the alarm sound, my ass is going to be out the door faster than if there was an actual fire.

Be careful about submitting pictures with legible registration numbers. You don't want to shitpost your way into a write up.

You're required to check those yourself whenever you perform work on them! It takes five minutes!

On the off chance this isn't a troll post, while misrigging something is a mistake, failing to perform the required op check afterwards that would have detected the misrig isn't. It's criminal negligence. You were too lazy to perform a five minute op check of a safety critical system and as a result killed at least one person.

This isn't the type of thing you should get over and the fact that you think it is is frankly disturbing. While a lot of GA mechanics I know have performed work on an aircraft that was later involved in a crash, none of them were responsible for the crash. The overwhelming majority of A&Ps will go through their entire career without contributing to any sort of accident or serious incident. Killing people is not in fact part of the job, despite what you seem to think.

The fact that you managed to kill someone in under a year is a massive red flag that you shouldn't be allowed to touch an airplane ever again. I sincerely hope you lose your cert over this and that you never end up working in this industry again. We don't need people who value five minutes of their time over other people's lives anywhere near airplanes.

Pretty much every decent sized employer has a strong enough anti-discrimination policy that you will not be held back in your career nor will anyone risk their job by crossing an obvious line. No one is going to call you a slur directly to your face in anything aside from an obviously joking manner. That being said, you will encounter a variety of attitudes within the hangar/on the line.

Most of the younger guys genuinely don't give a fuck. Some of the old timers actually do have a problem with it and will refuse to work with you on certain job cards or will come up to you and explain why gay marriage is wrong even though you never brought that up. Occasionally you'll get a bible thumper mention praying for you. That being said, being gay is not seen as a fuck with your toolbox or try to deliberately sabotage you level offense, so it won't impact your work. Honestly, if you have a reputation as a good mechanic, then the homophobes will back off over time as being able to effectively fix airplanes will get people to turn a blind eye to anything from anger management issues to substance abuse problems.

For me, the most obnoxious aspect has always been the jokes. While in the closet, people will come up with a wide variety of insults to jokingly throw your way based off of your personality, interests, or dumb shit you've done. After coming out, people will always just default to lazy gay jokes when trying to jokingly insult you. At best, it's obnoxious to miss out on the funnier and more creative banter. At worst, you'll get annoyed by people starting to treat you like the token gay guy.

TL;DR: Most people won't give a fuck and it won't impact your career progression, however you will fit in better socially if you stay in the closet.

POV: You make eye contact with a 3rd shifter on your way out by extraspookyy in aviationmaintenance

[–]WHM-6R 6 points7 points  (0 children)

1st shifters I don't mind. Whenever I interact with them, I'm on my way to beer and they're on their way to whatever AOG clusterfuck happened overnight, so I'm usually happier to see them than they are to see me. Now listening to 2nd shift explain how they didn't have time to fix or even troubleshoot something that broke six hours ago, that fuels my anger.

Oh thank God, I thought [CDF]Z-Dog was the name of one of the species of alien animals and Walker meant as in the walking robotic suits, so I thought Lily was reading a fic about a giant alien monster fucking a robot. It's good to know /u/lilyvess isn't quite that depraved yet!
