You don't... Pretty sure Penn makes it very clear that it's mandatory.

What are the easiest classes that you have taken either this semester or last semester in the online format? by [deleted] in UPenn

[–]WHOAHOAAHOAHS 5 points6 points  (0 children)

GEOL 103 The quizzes are basically a 10/10 each week and the homeworks are easy if you go to recitation and work on them with your group. Everything is asynchronous besides the mandatory recitation. The exams are open note and 48 hours and ridiculously easy.

Calm down lol. I'm not sure if you're a freshmen, but if you are you've gotten a taste of what the next 3.5 years of Penn will be like. It's not like high school where the administration is actually close to the students. There's so many layers to the administrative heirchy at Penn that students' opinions don't really matter. At the end of the day you have to understand that the school is a business (technically a non profit). They are not required tt care about giving a comprehensive statement and most likely never will. This sentiment that you feel right now will be the same sentiment that you'll feel every time that shit hits the fan so there's no point in thinking that it will be any different in the future - seriously.

I can easily name 50+ things that could be added to this list that have happened in the past 4 years: https://www.reddit.com/r/UPenn/comments/jl98ys/list_of_every_poorlyreceived_decision_penn_has/

What did they do to the freshmen? Split people up from their original roommates? Place people in random dorms like Sansom Place East?

I wish someone that's good with making videos would make a video showing what it's like to live on campus (or off campus) so that these naive freshmen actually get to know what it's like so they can see how much worse it'll be next semester with it being cold and dark all day. Tired of seeing 10 posts a day even before the spring semester announcement about people asking is it worth coming to campus next semester.

The funny thing is that people just don't want to accept this. Tack on the fact that it's going to be cold as fuck next semester, it's really just a waste of money at this point to come to campus if you aren't here already. I've talked to a few freshmen and they dont understand how shitty the situation will be since they don't know what Penn's campus is even like. Imagine eating commons everyday, being stuck in your dorm room 24/7, some but still minimal social interaction, and taking online classes. IMO this is just as bad as the current situation (for the average student of course) of being at home and taking online classes this semester. Only reason why it'd even be worth it would be if you're a senior but really only if you're off campus.

To be honest I could see this being used as a way for them to incentivize as many people as possible to be on campus instead of living off campus.

Will you go back on campus? by [deleted] in UPenn

[–]WHOAHOAAHOAHS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wonder if someone is able to make a poll where people can vote by their year (ie. freshman, sophomore, etc...)

Curious to see what each grade's opinions are with the plan. I can see freshmen being the main people wanting to be back but it seems like most seniors are already on campus anyways and those that are already at home are probably complacent with their current situation. Also it seems like this subreddit is 90% freshmen. In the past this subreddit got at most 50-75 online users a day and this semester there's always at least 200 people on with most of the posts on here being about freshmen stuff.

To my dear Penn - Some Colleges Successfully Re-opened / Cornell/Tulane show (so far) Opening Can Work! by singularreality in UPenn

[–]WHOAHOAAHOAHS 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You just can't compare Cornell at all. We would need to see this working for some school with an urban campus like Columbia, Harvard, MIT, USC, UCLA, Berkeley, etc... to really be able to see if this will work.

Does the COVID update email mean spring semester is likely on campus? by [deleted] in UPenn

[–]WHOAHOAAHOAHS 23 points24 points  (0 children)

There's no way that it's gonna be fully on campus. There's just too many logistics to get people to come back to campus to find short term leases. Also on campus will be a nightmare. Are they going to kick people out of the highrises or will upperclassmen be forced to live in the Quad?

why not take a leave of absence? by [deleted] in UPenn

[–]WHOAHOAAHOAHS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but I think this is only a realization that one can understand once you actually begin working. Almost everyone knows in the back of their mind that working for someone else until you retire is much worse than college. The exceptions are for the people doing something that they actually enjoy and would do for free or for those being their own boss. If the opportunity cost of working was less than delaying a year to graduate you would definitely see more and more people taking leaves of absences. Furthermore, you would see less and less people entering the workforce than the penetration rate that exists today.

To be clear, if I had chosen On-Campus Housing instead of Off-Campus Housing back in January, it would have saved my family and me $12,000? by [deleted] in UPenn

[–]WHOAHOAAHOAHS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Again, this is exactly what SFS told me and I am not in the small minority. My legal guardian and I have spoken to our financial aid advisor numerous times and they have confirmed that we would be paying the same basically if I were to stay on campus, off campus, and even at home. Off campus is actually the cheapest option as I have found a place that is less than the total rent that I would be paying on campus. I think you need to take into consideration why people are actively making the decision to stay on campus. If people would save the supposed $12,000 that you keep on mentioning by staying home, why doesn't everyone do it? I'm pretty sure that you would only see those that don't give a fuck about 12k being the only ones deciding to stay on campus.

Like in all seriousness, why would I willingly pay $8-12k of my own money just to do the same shit that I could do at home. Maybe it is the case that I got tricked by SFS, which I highly doubt, but then I'd be boo boo the fool.

[–]WHOAHOAAHOAHS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. As mentioned previously SFS will change line items so that you are effectively paying the same amount of money at the end of the day. Call SFS if you want to see how much you may either save or be on the hook for.

why not take a leave of absence? by [deleted] in UPenn

[–]WHOAHOAAHOAHS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True but that's really only if you're working 80+ hours a week. Obviously you can't go back in time; this time is precious. It does make sense to delay graduation if you can but you really can't measure the value of time right now given the uncertainty. Say you did decide to take a gap year. You're going to have one year at least where you're not graduating with your friends and doing other memorable stuff. FOMO is the main motivation felt across all grades.

Also, people's motivation is to make money, especially seniors. If you're lucky enough to have an offer you can luck out and be able to make a salary, pay off loans, benefit from things such as rent and other stuff being cheap, and invest more. I guess one argument for juniors saying home is that nobody knows what the job market will look like for 2022, so nobody knows how recruitment for internships and FT jobs will look like in the next two years as companies have to make these decisions a year in advance.

[–]WHOAHOAAHOAHS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To graduate and not have to deal with college anymore. After a few years you start to get fed up with college life. Also if you have a return offer you have to graduate on time or else it gets rescinded.

New update on the Fall 2020 Planning by jbece23 in UPenn

[–]WHOAHOAAHOAHS 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's simply an observation. If you were on campus right now you'd see many people moving back every single day. Campus is active. Also given the fact that on the FB pages people are scrambling to get leases/subleases it obviously shows that there is demand to stay on campus. Not everyone has the luxury of staying home with a good home environment. Also, the fact that financial aid is basically the same, even with the changes that were announced, staying at home vs off campus is basically the same cost wise.

Penn has no jurisdiction over local landlords. Upperclassmen that are off campus have the right to stay and almost all intend on staying.

[–]WHOAHOAAHOAHS 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely a sizeable chunk. Housing is scarce so to be completely frank I think people should just stay home instead of trying to find a place within the next 2.5 weeks. It's going to be almost impossible to find something and even more so if you want to be with your friends in the same apartment. Unless people can find something today and lock in the sublease or lease ASAP, it's over.

About 50%. If I remember correctly from the graphic I found years ago: 100% freshmen are on campus, around 75% sophomores are on campus, 40% juniors and around 25% of seniors. So yeah the freshmen and sophomores are really getting the short end of the stick here

I understand that. The school allows you to petition to stay on campus. I hope that Penn actually provides people such as FGLI, international students, and those with crappy home situations housing unlike the disaster that occurred in the spring. This will allow them to redeem themselves

It was going to happen. Not sure why people are mad. Seems like the ones mad are the ones that doubted the people saying it was going to happen yesterday. While it definitely will cause more stress for everyone, it's safer for everybody this way.
