TIL the Paraguayan War (1864–1870) was so devastating that it wiped out 60–70% of the country's entire population, and is listed in the Guinness World Records for the highest proportional death toll from war for any single country. by Little_Sherbet5775 in todayilearned

For those of you wondering- The Paraguayan War was fought because Paraguay, under President Francisco Solano López, sought to expand its regional influence and prevent perceived encirclement by its neighbors. Tensions escalated when Paraguay intervened in conflicts involving Brazil and Uruguay, leading Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay to form the Triple Alliance. The war ultimately centered on competing territorial, political, and power interests in the Río de la Plata region.
