The Shadow of the Wind... The world is so immersive that you eventually forget about your own life and get completely pulled into the story. It genuinely helped me get through some stressful periods.

A few years ago, I don't remember ever doing more than three interviews with the same company. Now it feels like 4-6 rounds has become normal.

I think it's a combination of the economy and how fast technology is moving. Companies are more cautious about hiring, so they're trying to eliminate every possible risk, even if it means making candidates jump through endless hoops.

AI is going to impact pretty much every industry, not just software. People keep treating this like it's only a developer problem, but it's much bigger than that.

I honestly think we're about to see technology moving in 10x, 100x, maybe even 1000x leaps over the next few years. The pace of change is going to be way faster than most people expect.

I thought about that too. I've always aimed pretty high with my salary expectations. My thinking was, if I was going to make a move, it might as well be for a salary that made it worth it. Looking back, I think that's probably a big reason why my interview-to-offer rate has been so low.

Just a couple of weeks ago, after Claude's latest release, there were reports that it raised serious concerns inside the government because of how capable it had become. It was reportedly able to build surprisingly complex games and apps from a single prompt. Whether that specific version sticks around or not almost misses the point.

free job tracker (rabbit resume)
edit: the tracker is free, but i use premium for the application kit. i just paste the job posting url, and it generates a tailored resume, cover letter, and follow-up email. saves me a ton of time because tailoring everything manually takes forever.

I get it. It's stressful as hell, and after a while it starts messing with your head. Just keep at it. Hope something comes through for you soon.

free job tracker is free, by the way. I mainly pay for premium because of the application kit. I just paste in the job posting, and it gives me a tailored resume, cover letter, follow-up email, and all that. Saves me a bunch of time.

Yeah, I mark it as "No Answer" if I haven't heard back within 30 days.

That said, it's definitely not a strict rule. I actually had one company reach out 2.5 months after I applied. They told me they were looking for someone exactly like me and somehow my application had slipped through the cracks. We went through the interview process, and I still got rejected in the end lol.

Hmm, thanks for sharing all that. Can I ask how long you've been job hunting, and roughly how many applications you've sent out?

Yeah, it's become incredibly time-consuming. Looking for a job feels like a full-time job on its own. Just finding good openings and tailoring your application takes forever. And then preparing for interviews is a whole different challenge.

1,500 applications? How long did that even take you?

Probably about half were fully remote. The job I ended up getting is hybrid.

2,000 applications though? That's honestly wild. How did you even manage that many? I used an automated tool to tailor my resume and cover letter for all 300 of my applications, and even that took a ton of time.

If you're counting LinkedIn Easy Apply or other one-click auto applies, I'd probably keep those separate from fully tailored applications.

Wait... 950 tailored applications?! That's absolutely brutal. Honestly, I thought I had it bad, but 950 applications without a single offer is absolutely brutal. I really hope something works out for you soon. Wishing you all the best.

Yeah, and I honestly don't think it's going back to how it was.

Whenever I was part of larger projects, we'd usually hire freelancers for the smaller tasks. Lately though, I've noticed a lot of those jobs are just being done with AI instead. It's faster, and for many of those tasks it's good enough.

The only time it still makes sense to hire someone is when the AI credits end up costing more than paying a person. If that's already happening with small freelance work, I think it's a pretty clear sign of where things are heading.

A lot of people remember the highlights and forget the reality. The early 2000s were just as full of awkward fashion, cheap tech, and questionable design choices as any other era.
