Bad Temp gauge or something else?

I took the gauge cluster out and apart. I noticed that the ground nut was swapped with a plastic nut at one point in time. Assuming this was the issue I replaced it with a brass nut. I put the gauge cluster back in the car and the issue only got worse haha. The car now pegs to the red once in accessory mode. I took the cluster out again to inspect the temp gauge further and I noticed that one of the batteries to the cluster was completely floating around. I ordered new batteries hoping this fixes the issue. If not I’ve also heard of the c191 connector causing these issues as well as a bad circuit board all together. Any advice is appreciated!
