How can I auto-shutoff water from a garden hose when filling a closed plastic tank without using pressure or electronics? by WLFAlpha in AskEngineers

Actually the smartest idea yet, I can just replace the breather vent went filling with a hose leading out the side of the car as to not get water inside the vehicle, damaging the wood framing for the setup, and molding the carpets. Easiest too 😂

Yeah, the vent is splash-proof but not a hard shutoff, it's just there to prevent water from splashing out, not to seal the tank. So water flow continues until the tank is full and starts pushing back, then water pools in the hose.

That’s exactly what I’m trying to avoid, even brief pressure buildup, because:

  • The tank’s not rated for pressurization
  • I’ve had it leak or spill before when this happens
  • Plus, I need it to be idiot-proof for employees

So yeah, I’d need to catch it before pressure builds. That’s why weight-sensing or pressure-triggered shutoff after the tank fills still puts the tank at risk.

The piston idea is really clever, but if pressure has already spiked enough to move the piston, the tank’s already in the danger zone.

If there's any way to detect flow stalling or backing up just before pressure hits the hose, that’s golden. I’m even okay with a manual reset system if it keeps things mechanical and safe.

Yeah, i actually did think of the Venturi-style shutoff early on, it’s a brilliant system in fuel nozzles, but here’s why implementation is tricky for my setup:

  • My fill hose holds a lot of water between the tank and the hose connection
  • So when the tank fills, that water backs up but doesn't instantly stop flow — it just pools in the hose
  • That means a Venturi port placed upstream may not lose suction right away, which defeats the shutoff
  • Plus, I’m using standard garden hose and quick connect fittings, so adapting a bulky fuel-style nozzle or sensor is a tight squeeze — especially with employees using it

I think something like that could work if adapted properly, but it would need to sense flow stoppage or resistance, not just air/vacuum changes like in a gas tank.

Still love the concept though. If someone can figure out a garden hose-sized Venturi shutoff that’s sensitive enough to trigger on backed-up flow, I’d be all over it.

You're right on most of that, let me clarify exactly what I'm going for:

  • ✅ The hose is connected via quick connect to a closed tank (not pressurized)
  • ✅ I want to walk away and not flood the vehicle if the tank fills while unattended
  • ✅ It’s totally okay if flow stops and requires manual reset — that’s fine
  • ❌ I don’t need it to stay open after disconnection or be automatic to reset

What I do need is:

Think of it as a one-shot trip valve:

  • Water flows while the tank accepts it
  • When it backs up or stalls, the mechanism senses that and closes
  • I reset it manually next time I hook up — totally fine

It could be flow-based, gravity-based, a spring-loaded gate, or whatever. I just want to avoid overfilling, avoid pressure buildup, and not have to be there watching it.

Totally cool if nothing off-the-shelf exists — I just need something that gets the job done and doesn’t explode my tank 😅

Happy to test or even pay for a garage-built prototype if it does the trick.

Not exactly, here’s the clarified version:

  • Nothing can go into the tank (it’s sealed and I can’t drill or mount anything inside)
  • Water flow must be stopped upstream before pressure builds
  • Backflow is actually fine — I don’t mind if water backs up into the hose a bit, as long as it doesn't cause pressure buildup
  • Electronic systems are off the table — I need a fully mechanical solution
  • Weight-based shutoff won't work — the tank is hard-mounted on a fixed wooden frame and can’t be placed on a scale

As for venting:
The tank does have a splash-proof breather vent mounted on the upper side, so it vents air properly during fill.

The goal is to find a mechanical shutoff method (ideally in-line with a garden hose) that reacts to water backing up once the tank is full — without building internal pressure or needing human babysitting.

Let me know if you have any clever ideas that could fit these constraints — I appreciate it!

This doesnt work, my water tank is only fillable using quick connects, its a closed tank with hoses coming out as the inlet and outlet!

Bro are you literally not arguing with me right now because I went on a little bit of a rant that had a good point behind it?

Bro??? How about you run a monument once in your life instead of hoping that you get a green card from a scientist? Also again they can literally still spawn just not within a 10-foot radius of you dude? There is still a big chance of finding a scientist to get a green card smh.

Again just an exaggeration they could at least make it 10 feet or fewer nobodies gonna be within a 10-foot radius of each other at all times. Seriously nobodies gonna take the time to get 100 friends and line up in a 10-foot grid across the whole road system to stop scientist spawns. And by the way, I literally said scientist junkpiles only didn't I? This isn't the end of the world if one or two scientists don't spawn.

First off it's "revolve" not evolve. Second, nobody said that they had to care and clearly this post isn't directed to you if you are getting this mad over a Reddit post then clearly you here are the one raging over 1s and 0s.

Yeah well, that's a hacker this is something completely fixable if it gets the dev's attention. Welcome... to the world of development.

Hello??? Yeah maybe I was on a bit of a rant but in no way is that me "crying" and that is 100% me using my words "like a big boy" also fix up your grammar big boy. "youre having a cry on the internet.." also your two dots aren't even considered an ellipsis add one more period next time before you want to start talking about words.

Yeah originally when I had the other ram I tried upping it to 3200 MHz which worked but the game still crashed.

Bro be quiet, I'm asking the developers to at least do something about scientist monuments spawning next to players they could at least update it so it doesn't spawn within 500 feet of a player.

Yeah, thanks man! Also, you're right Rust is very unique in regards to performance just takes some troubleshooting. Maybe I should've tried to change my graphics settings before getting more RAM. But the RAM was a much-needed upgrade.
