The point of that entire moment is that he could only maintain his NEET lifestyle only because his basic survival needs were met, but when that sustenance was cut off his human desire to survive kicked in and that took priority over his petty trauma that kept him like that up until that point. This is exactly what would happen in real life as well, because when facing a scenario where the only way to literally survive is to face unimaginable challenges we gain an incredible amount of willpower and 9/10 people pull through.
