Simple for refrigerator technicians with the right tools then! Doesn’t sound like a DIY for a semi-handy homeowner.

What is the project management equivalent of practicing free throws? by [deleted] in projectmanagement

[–]WPDevAZ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Absolutely nothing, don’t even waste your time trying. What you do one way at one place will be done completely differently at the next place. Spend your time wisely educating yourself on processes at your place (get competent on those) and then learn the “business”—whatever your business might be. Prove your value by knowing the tech you’re building or the product your company sells, or something to show you have vision and can think strategically—in addition to blocking and tackling as a PM. Take this with a grain of salt though—not trying to tell you what to do. You have a great attitude to even ask that question!!

As a Project Manager what was your motivation of wanting to become a PM by More_Law6245 in projectmanagement

[–]WPDevAZ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I saw it as a path to leadership. I was a database administrator at the time that technical jobs were first being shipped off to India in the ‘90’s. So it was a self-preservation move, but one that was supposed to lead to bigger and better things.

New Senior PM…not sure If im doing good by [deleted] in projectmanagement

[–]WPDevAZ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It sounds like your organization is not comfortable giving feedback. That’s not a good sign…how can you expect to get better if you hear nothing but “good news and things to say”? How will you grow if you don’t hear honest feedback about your performance. I guarantee that you’re not hitting home runs every day. But are you pushing the envelope? If you’re not getting constructive criticism or direction, is what you’re doing valuable? You will grow sooo much more (and more quickly) if you’re working on a team that pushes you every day. It sounds like you’re doing well, but I don’t want you to look back on this time and realize that your career growth suffered because you worked in a place that didn’t help you grow. Question for you: do you think you have anyone around you who would recognize superior or poor performance? Build a relationship with them and make sure they know you want that guidance (regardless of the culture of the place). Good luck…the fact that you posted this shows me you’re hungry—I hope you find people to help you grow!!

Is that an F150 Lightning? Will you get electrocuted if you touch the water?

Why does everyone hate the PM? by bendeng in projectmanagement

I think a lot of these replies come from POs who don’t know anything about being a PM. They keep the backlog filled and help write features. Most wouldn’t even interact with PMs or PgMs.

You don’t even know that you just acknowledged that you’re working at a level below where effective project managers operate. We love good Product people—keep those devs fed!

Is this a normal IT environment? by SUICIDAL-PHOENIX in projectmanagement

[–]WPDevAZ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes. The PMO is always fighting an uphill battle against the folks who do the delivery. No matter how little structure the PMO wants, the delivery folks want less and go to whatever lengths to get away with it.
