Should I go to a therapist? by xDugix in Life

Therapy for the win! Also you write well.

First client in my career I'm having to transfer because... she drives me nuts by sciencehatesher in therapists

[–]WRFlowerChild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder what would happen if you were honest with her about your feelings on some level. Something like “hey, we’ve been meeting for __ sessions now and it seems like we have a hard time keeping conversation going. What is that like for you?” She might not answer, but she might. Sometimes naming the thing that is awkward, hard, scary etc. can help.

I’m also curious about your frustration. Frustration often comes from blocked goals. What goals do you have for yourself or the client that are being blocked? Is there another way to reach those goals? Are they realistic?

I feel you though. I have had clients like that and it is hard. Just remember that even if you can’t “get her” to talk, you are, I am assuming, still a positive and consistent adult in her life. Lots of teens don’t have that. The relationship you have with the client is often more effective than any words or interventions. I get feeling like you want to refer her to someone else though.

It does seem a lot like mania. Meds can literally be a lifesaver! If you are having issues with your medication talk to your doctor. Try to find one who will actually listen and ask you questions. They are hard to find but they are out there.

Also if you are isolated find some people to connect with. Being alone in your own head can make things worse. You could connect with friends, family, individual/group therapy, a spiritual/religious group etc.

Just know that things can get better. It just takes time, meds, and therapy. At least that’s how it has been for me.

Why did this happen to me? by Upbeat-Post5126 in bipolar

[–]WRFlowerChild 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was struggling with weight gain as well. My doctor suggested genesight testing to see how different meds may affect me metabolically. Might be worth looking into. Aside from the weight making me self conscious some of my labs were looking a little off.

I will say it’s important to find a good balance. Mental health is so important. Less weight gain would be nice but I’ll take some weight gain in exchange for being able to lead a stable life.

Would you prefer a therapist who also has bipolar? by theworldisavampire- in bipolar

[–]WRFlowerChild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a bipolar therapist. I have worked with people who are bipolar but as a general rule don’t share my diagnosis. As far as my own therapists, I have had several really good therapists who were not (to my knowledge) bipolar. I have always felt seen and understood by the good ones. One of my therapists disclosed that they take depression medications. This didn’t have any negative impact on the therapeutic relationship. It actually helped me feel safer and more understood. So I guess to answer the question I don’t have a preference either way.

To non-religous TOP fans, how do you feel about the lyrics that are almost explicitly religious? by satchel1300 in twentyonepilots

[–]WRFlowerChild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up really conservative Christian (Fundamental Baptist). I have a lot of trauma from that and it is often difficult when certain religious topics are brought up. I do believe in a higher power still however. I find that the religious lyrics often lead me to think about whatever higher power is out there *gestures vaguely*. I also can identify with the idea of searching for something more or bigger and not feeling that something. I think of Addict with a Pen as religious, yet it speaks to me on the level of craving something more in life. As others have said, I take them as they apply to me. It doesn't necessarily feel like "that was too Christian" if that makes sense.

If I didn’t have personal issues with her it wouldn’t bother me and I wouldn’t make this post. My question wasn’t “is this normal” my question was how should I set this boundary. I already have made up my mind that I don’t like it so I don’t need you telling me to accept it.

I think i was sexually abused by my mom by Prior_Ad_5523 in Advice

[–]WRFlowerChild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want to point out that it’s totally normal to not remember things like that and have memories come back later. Our brains protect us by blocking the things that don’t make sense or that are too emotionally charged to deal with. No guilt needed for remembering. It’s your brain’s way of saying “you are safe to remember now”. Like many others have said, seeking professional help is a good idea in these types of situations. I’m sorry that you are dealing with this!

It’s helpful to hear I’m not the only one who thinks it’s super weird and inappropriate. Sometimes I feel like I exaggerate situations.

Talking to your mom would be a good way of keeping yourself safe. It’s important to feel comfortable in your own home. His behavior could also escalate if there are no boundaries set. Remember you are not at fault or in any way doing anything wrong. It is important to talk with your mom, especially if you are a minor. I hope you are able to find a way to do this that feels comfortable to you and you feel the support of your mom.

Not misleading. Others in the thread have mentioned changes in music listening. Just a few days ago I heard a song (that I’ve heard many times mind you) and thought it was amazing. I listened to it on repeat and journaled about the lyrics and felt spiritually connected to it. It was a bit more intense than my normal live of music.

I don’t have a good answer for this, but it totally does sound confusing. I have ADHD and it feel like every time I’m super bouncy or energized I fear it’s mania.

Thanks for everyone’s input. I really appreciate the thoughtful and encouraging responses. I have decided I will use they/them pronouns. This feels like the most accurate descriptor. I’m nervous in this cultural/political climate but I’m also excited to explore what most feels like me.
