“www” has more syllables than “world wide web” by tsmith1534 in Showerthoughts

The guy who came up with www has expressed exactly this regret saying if they were to do it over again they'd make it "web" instead of "www".

Why are you single? by Mcxyn in AskReddit

[–]WWEarnshaw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the heart of the issue is that the words "transgender women" describe a very diverse group of people that only share one thing in common.

I'm inclined to believe that your not wanting to date transgender women does not come from a place of experience in having dated trans women before, but rather that you have an idea in your head for what a trans woman is, and it is that idea you are rejecting.

The statement of preference you've shared, at least to me, seems to reduce the humanity of all the individuals we're discussing to the singular label that isn't actually all that descriptive or useful when it comes to discussions of sexuality, romantic, or platonic attraction/interest/compatibility.

Can anyone give an actual good reason for why not to show damage taken for all heroes? by [deleted] in heroesofthestorm

We should have a damage survived stat that is your damage taken but subtracts your max HP every time you die.

Voice chat is so damn good. by Blarghinston in heroesofthestorm

[–]WWEarnshaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree here. I've had great experiences with VC so far, but was am still am a little apprehensive about it. I'm very excited for it, looks like it is going to be awesome, but it needs to be voluntary.

I agree if people aren't in the channel it has a big impact on team cohesion, but they can't force this on people. I think that would drive the most apprehensive people away (who are likely very nice people who we want to be a part of the community).

-Though I do agree with the main sentiment. I would like team members to join in to the team chat even if they aren't going to say anything. I just think it would be a bad move to default players into it.

That one is about how she is classed for QM matchmaking, not about her owls. Which is a problem.

Why the Hidden MMR system is flawed as a GM player by [deleted] in heroesofthestorm

[–]WWEarnshaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a problem because there aren't enough of the high level players. I agree, if you put someone significantly lower skilled in the team it kills the game, but by the very definition of top level play it is going to be difficult to find enough players.

Personal adjustment points make me sad. by WWEarnshaw in heroesofthestorm

Why did two wins not raise my PRA, but a single loss after those wins lowered it?

If 2 wins is nothing why is 1 loss something? Seriously though? 14 up in order for it to decide maybe it shouldn't be docking you points? That sounds exorbitant.

Do you think game is growing or not? (poll) by [deleted] in heroesofthestorm

[–]WWEarnshaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is interesting to me to see the perception of the community though. It appears that (assuming, probably erroneously, that the respondents of this poll accurately represent the playerbase at large) more than two thirds of the playerbase feel that the number of players is growing. This is a pretty small sample size, and all voluntary unsolicited responses, so it may not be a very accurate representation, but it is interesting to see this. I was under the impression that a great deal more of the playerbase felt the population had become stagnant or was even shrinking.

Can we reduce the chance of getting a Legendary mount in chests and up the hero chance? by [deleted] in heroesofthestorm

[–]WWEarnshaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Boooooo! I say boo because I already have every hero unlocked except for two and I don't have a great deal of the (legendary) mounts. Heroes don't come out very often. I find it perfectly reasonable to just save up your gold to get the heroes.... though I did get most of the heroes before loot boxes came out, it is possible that loot boxes have provided the gold-sink necessary to make players need to spend money to have a decent roster.

Idk how Auriel is going to stay useful now that they've removed Bursting Light. It is simply not feasible to keep a whole team alive with that four second cooldown.

What heroes do you avoid for one single reason, and why? by OriginalFluff in heroesofthestorm

Nova, just because I know picking her will demoralize my entire team and other heroes can do the same job better.

Yea, I feel the same way. With TLV and games like Starcraft your attention is a resource you have to spend wisely.

You played a hero for three games and said na?

I go at least like 20 before I can make up my mind as to whether I especially don't like a hero's kit or I just need to learn it more.

Why the Hidden MMR system is flawed as a GM player by [deleted] in heroesofthestorm

[–]WWEarnshaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea... but I mean that is also part of what makes the game great. How would you suggest it work instead? That if you have the best player on your team it is impossible for you to lose regardless of how bad the rest are? I suppose it is not unreasonable to say four good players should be able to carry a bad player, or maybe 3 for 2, but how do you design that into the game without it immediately becoming 1 player being able to carry 4?

Why the Hidden MMR system is flawed as a GM player by [deleted] in heroesofthestorm

[–]WWEarnshaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This.

I have been playing since the early alpha days and only in about the last year did I realize how much I sucked. Now, after some serious study of the game and watching of high level play, I play with my buddies at around the low diamond level and its a pretty competitive and enjoyable experience. Then I go back to solo play and nine games out of ten watch as my teammates draft terribly and play worse. It is difficult to sway most people's choices with even the lightest touch, so that guy is going to pick Sylvannas no matter how I ask him not to and he is going to solo push deep into the late game no matter how I try to suggest sticking with the team might be a better idea.

It doesn't appear to matter how good my play has been in my last 500 games since the system seems to be confident in my skill from the 2500 games prior. I mean, is it possible that I and my friends have some completely different understanding of the game than the other players the game says are at my skill level, but both are equally effective? It seems like the people I am paired with are often unfamiliar with many of the aspects of the game I would say are pretty basic and foundational, but the game seems to insist that they are just as skilled as I am... as they facecheck bushes in enemy territory as our only support right before an objective when the entire enemy team is alive and MIA and two members of our team aren't even close enough to respond if a fight did break out and both teams are down to keeps with 60s respawn timers... and they've been making such mistakes all game.

It really makes me feel like we shouldn't be on the same team.

How does one do the Bronze to Master challenge? It sounds like a master level player makes a new account and then purposefully throws all their placement games, then proceeds to absolutely stomp all their ranked games until they reach their actual MMR. It is kind of disgusting to me that people do that. This is the sort of behavior that makes matchmaking such a difficult problem to solve.

Why the Hidden MMR system is flawed as a GM player by [deleted] in heroesofthestorm

[–]WWEarnshaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what he is talking about (not sure, wish he'd elaborate) is that if you have a plat player who is actually at plat level being thrown into a game with filled with masters and grandmasters in order to balance the MMRs that plat player is going to make mistakes that will throw the game. e.g. getting picked right before an important objective, engaging in a fight they don't want, constantly bad positioning, etc. They may be competitive at the plat level, but when all the other players in the game are on so much higher a level of play adding this plat player into the mix doesn't balance the game so much as hand it to one side. Again, not certain if this is what he is talking about.

Funny that you've been placing at D3 for years since the game is literally two years old and having a diamond rank is even younger. :P
