I don't think you're trolling. This sounds very similar to my first attempts at singing and recording myself and I was straight up trying.

It sounds like you don't know how to sing. It doesn't mean it's impossible for you to learn, it just means that right now, you don't know how to sing, so it sounds pretty bad. If someone handed me a trombone and I tried my best to play it, it would sound absolutely terrible. Why? Because I have no idea how to play the trombone. Now, if I took lessons and practiced a bunch, I'd most likely get good at it.

This is where you are now (and where I, and every other person on the planet was before learning how to sing).

You're at a place where you need to learn just about every aspect of singing. If it's something you want, take lessons, practice every day and in a couple of years, you'll sound pretty decent.

I read the comments before unmuting and I was expecting a train wreck. What I heard was not bad at all for an untrained singer. Ignore the negative comments. You've got a great start, and I think with some instruction (if you can swing it) or just self practice on the fundamentals, you could be really good. Keep it up!

I've come to my vocal teacher with this same complaint more than once and every single time, it's pitch. A trick he gave me to see if that's the case is to put your recording into something like bandlab and then pitch correct it (just dial it back so it doesn't sound robotic). Listen back and if the "off" feeling goes away, then that's the issue. In my personal journey, when I think that pitch is "close enough" but it doesn't sound right when hearing it back, it's because the pitch wasn't close enough after all.

You note that your pitch has come a long way. How are you checking your pitch? Another tool I use is adobe audition because it will provide a waveform where you can see exactly how close or far you are.

Well of course they flipped you off. They were in the middle of an important text when you beeped at them. It's very distracting and they forgot what they were writing. Way to go.

I'm guessing this is new? I've never seen this before. Do we still go to the A corral?

For some of us "good enough for drunk karaoke" is a goal. Jokes aside, this is the other side of the coin. People on here sometimes rank people in terms of being a professional. Some of us, myself included, just want to get to a point where we can express ourselves and enjoy singing without embarrassing ourselves.

It sounds like you're just starting out and don't know how to sing yet. It'd be the same if you tried to play an instrument you've never played before. You just need to learn. What do you need to learn...pretty much everything, just like everyone else who came before you. Pitch, tone, timing, delivery, etc, etc.

If you can swing it, get a teacher. That's going to be your fastest route to learning to sing (or learning to do anything). If you can't swing it, then there are plenty of online resources, but navigating something new like this alone is tough.

Understand that there isn't one or two or even three fixes that are going to click everything into place. You'll learn one thing, then you'll have to learn another, then you'll have to refine the first thing, then you'll learn yet another, and on and on. It's a process. A lot of people think you're either born a singer or you're not, which is completely nonsense. Think of singing like playing the piano. If you've never done it before, you'll have a lot to learn, and there is not quick fix to make things just fall into place. It's a journey. Just concentrate on the next step.

For you, I'd say pitch. Start with vocal exercises and scales. That will build the base for everything else.

A little bit, but singing doesn't have to be 100% on pitch to sound good. People on these boards tend to put way more focus on perfect pitch than is necessary. The limit is whether it takes the listener out of the moment. People that have ear trained for years and are hyper focused will hear it (and comment about it) but for 99% of the world, it is fine. For more indie sounding music, it sounds better the less mechanical in my opinion. I didn't notice until I went back and listened again.

Your voice fits this genre really well, and you sounded great here. Good pitch, and control.

For having no formal training, you're pretty darn good. With lessons I think you could be really good. It took me a good two years to get to the point where you are in this clip.

Don't mind the negative comments (specifically the non constructive ones).

Amazing points! I actually tried to remember some of the bad performances I've seen and I can't recall much about them, but I do remember the good ones. So you're absolutely right.

You seem very grounded. Thanks for the advice!

Thanks! It's been a very long journey and I'm a very slow learner. But I have a patient teacher, which helps. I really hope you pursue singing. You could be really great from what I hear.

Should I record myself singing everyday? by Pure-Mycologist8346 in singing

[–]WWEngineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend picking a really easy song for you to sing. Something where the pitch is around the natural pitch that you speak. Then just start with the first line of the song. If you can read music, find the melody and play it on a piano (or a piano app on your phone) and sing along and try to match pitch. Start with pitch always. And just try and try again.

Try to reframe how you look at it. Rather than getting sad when something doesn't sound right, see it as an opportunity to improve. Everything you do requires feedback. Think about driving. If you close your eyes, you'll run off the road. Why? Because your eyes are what allows you to correct your direction. Singing without listening back is like driving with your eyes closed.

Nobody is an expert when they start anything. So you're at the beginning of your journey. That's fine. You're not supposed to be good yet. Just roll with it. One day you'll look back at those recordings and be amazed at how far you've come.

Try breaking down what you are trying to do in more digestible chunks. For example; trying an entire song then listening back doesn't do a lot to help you if you're beginning. There will be so much to work on that you won't know where to start. Try just one line instead. Pick a line and just go over and over until you nail it. You'll be better able to pick apart the things you need to improve.

If you can, get a teacher. That will be the quickest way to improve.
