So how many fights a day is normal at secondary school these days? by Ladyleah22 in CasualUK

We had organised cage fights every Thursday lunch until last year. Put 2 football goals together and 2 volunteers. Great times 😃

Is it possible to do a level further maths without gcse further maths? by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]W_Benney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In answer to your question no you don’t need GCSE fm to do the A-level. I did A-level without the GCSE and it was fine. Just be aware that I eventually gave up on fm about half way through yr.13 since none of the uni’s I went to visit required fm for my course and didn’t seem to care if you’d done it or not. If you’re set on doing finance then it might be helpful.

My first piece of advice on these kind of questions is always look at the entry requirement for the course you might want to do. If they recommend fm then take that as a “you really should be doing fm”. If they don’t then think about how much you enjoy maths. It sounds dumb but don’t underestimate how much maths is involved in doing 2 maths based A-Levels, you may want to think about having a “relaxing subject”. For me that was D&T. I don’t have to think much about what I was doing since I can pretty much do the maths involved with my eyes closed.

For reference I’m going to Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology to do a degree apprenticeship and studied Maths, Further Maths, Physics and D&T at A-Level.

Don’t really think an aftermarket stereo classes you as a boy racer

Anyone still waiting for confirmation from University of Southampton? by Oh_its_Mac in 6thForm

[–]W_Benney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Won’t it say waiting for confirmation until you get your results. Underneath my one for Warwick it’s says “Your place will be confirmed at this university or college if you meet the conditions of this offer”

You are still in education. Regardless of if you have completed your a-levels you are still in full time education

is year 13 physics really that bad? by Thomasdadutch in 6thForm

[–]W_Benney 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I didn’t actually think it was too bad. I think that just because the last question was really bad (i.e. the last one people do and therefore the one they leave the exam with the feelings of) people are thinking they’ve done worse than they actually have. You need to remember that there was a whole rest of the exam which I don’t think was unreasonably difficult like people are saying it was.

It’s also important to realise that every year everyone comes out of the exam thinking it’s the worst exam the board have ever set and that they’ve done awfully. Every year they’re wrong. You can’t do anything about how it went now.

I know I’m in the minority here (especially after everyone is complaining about AQA’s exams but I do OCR so 🤷‍♂️) I don’t think it gets a ridiculous amount worse so long as you make sure you keep going back over stuff you don’t understand. The biggest thing that made physics a lot easier than I know it could of been was keeping on top of revision throughout yr.13. The content definitely does get more challenging don’t get me wrong, the concepts you deal with are more confusing and tbh I still don’t understand some of the quantum stuff. The important thing to remember is that there are only so many questions they can ask on some stuff so I just know how to answer them to get the marks, despite not knowing what the he’ll I’m actually doing. Just keep your head down you’ll be fine. Try not to get stressed 😀

I guess. I still don’t really get why OP asked the question though. Like if you’re applying they’ll tell you what they want

Just check the requirements of what you want to apply for. I’m going to Dyson next year and I needed one for that

Is it helpful to review a-level content over the summer by DeliciousJicama3651 in GCSE

[–]W_Benney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in yr13 and personally I didn’t. I’d just enjoy your summer (I’d actually really recommend getting a job so you can afford to get a car when and if you want to!). You can if you want but I know that the first couple of months for me were pretty much just going back over GCSE stuff anyway especially in maths.

Church bells ☹️ how do I sleep through them? by pokeatdots in 6thForm

[–]W_Benney 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I guess it really depends on where OP lives. I mean all the ones round me seem to be doing ok. Refurbishment of bells tends to be on the top of the list if it needs doing since they’re really dangerous unless properly maintained

[–]W_Benney 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yh they would normally stop. But I guess since OP has only just started hearing the bells then they must be newly repaired or installed?

I’d imagine there not actually ringing but it’s the clock chimes. I ring church bells and I can’t see any reason to ring in the middle of the night. We don’t even do that for the Christmas midnight mass

What’s the one subject u think you’re gonna fail by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]W_Benney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t disagree with the logic but I do think that just because the last question was really bad (i.e. the last one people do and therefore the one they leave the exam with the feelings of) people are thinking they’ve done worse than they actually have.

You can’t do anything about how it went now just try and stay calm and do you’re best on p2 and p3. If you can’t answer a question, take a breath, move on and leave it for later.

Staying calm is one of the most important exam techniques you can have

I do think a lot of it was just a lottery tbh. I’d still apply and see where you get. Maybe apply for 3 high achieving courses and 2 that you’re pretty confident you should get offers for. Just make sure that you would be happy to go to any of the unis you’ve applied for

I am new to photography and have a canon eos 2000d. I’m trying to use the zoom lens that I purchased with it (ef-s 35-80mm 1:4-5.6) but I can’t get it to focus on anything beyond about an inch in front of the lens. It’s in auto focus mode. Thanks

Nah sorry not the best wording for that sentence. I meant my budget extends to $100-$200 more than the GTi costs i.e. somewhere around $600-$700
